Parents,
The last 24 hours have held instances of violence, trauma, and divisiveness in our country. Many of you are already aware of yet another school shooting in Colorado. Also, yesterday included the loss of Charlie Kirk in a senseless display of anger. Today, local schools in our area went on alert because of similar threats.
Unfortunately, videos of these events (especially graphic images of Charlie Kirk’s death) have been circulating online and on social media. The likelihood that these images might be seen by your student is realistically high.
These are things that we were never meant to see and that God does not desire for us. These images are unsettling and possibly traumatic for your student.
I encourage you to talk with your student(s) in open and honest conversation about these things. Let them know that they are always welcome to talk with you about how they are feeling in response to these events or these images. Let them know that you love them, that you care, and that you are there for them.
This is also a possible opportunity to talk with your student(s) about social media usage. It feels that more of our feeds are becoming desensitized which can potentially expose us to more negativity. Talk with your family about how we might find greater empathy and compassion for those around us.
While there are many voices seeking to widen the divide in our country, we must remember, especially today, Jesus’ example of love and grace to everyone. How He taught us to show compassion and kindness even to those who are different than us. How He calls us to demonstrate the Kingdom of God on earth just as it is in heaven.
At FBC, we are here for you and your family. I am praying for our students, the families of the lives lost during this week, and for unity and love to prevail instead of anger and hatred. If you need anything, please reach out.
