Here is information from the city to keep you informed and those you know that may need help. Wanted to share some pictures with you of our setup at the church to receive people. I will post in comments.
⚠️❄️ Winter Weather Advisory – Updated Guidance & Preparedness Information ❄️⚠️
The City of Abbeville continues to monitor updates from the National Weather Service (Greenville–Spartanburg). The most recent guidance now indicates slightly lower ice accumulation, currently forecast in the range of 0.25 to 0.4 inches. However, winter storms can be unpredictable, and actual ice totals may be higher or lower than forecasted. Residents should still prepare for the possibility of power outages lasting several days.
🕒 Storm Timing Update
The start time of the storm has shifted to later this afternoon/evening, which means there is still time today for last-minute preparation activities.
🏠 Shelter-in-Place Guidance
Once the storm begins, the City is advising residents to shelter in place and only travel for true emergencies. Fewer vehicles on the road allow first responders to reach emergencies more quickly and safely and enable utility crews to restore power and services more efficiently.
⚡ Power & Energy Conservation
Even with slightly reduced ice projections, power outages remain likely. While power is still on, residents are strongly encouraged to conserve electricity where possible, as reduced demand helps place less stress on the power grid and can support faster restoration if outages occur.
🧊 Ice & Power Outage Risk Reminder
• 0.25 inches of ice or more can cause power outages
• Accumulating ice adds significant weight to trees and power lines, increasing outage risk
🏠 Emergency Shelter Information
An Emergency Shelter will be available at Lighthouse Ministries for residents who may need it.
📞 For shelter details and additional information, please contact the Abbeville County Department of Public Safety.
📦 Residents Are Encouraged To:
• Monitor weather forecasts and official alerts closely
• Complete last-minute preparations today
• Have essential supplies on hand (food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries)
• Prepare homes and vehicles for cold weather
• Conserve electricity while power remains available
• Seek shelter with family or friends who have a backup heat source if needed
City crews are staged and ready to respond as conditions develop. Additional updates will be shared as new information becomes available. Please prepare now and stay safe.
