As we celebrate Black History Month, we also recognize a significant milestone in our communityโ€”Mt. Triumph Baptist Churchโ€™s 130th Anniversary!

Established in 1895 after receiving its charter, Mount Triumph Baptist Church has stood as a pillar of faith, resilience, and service in Abbeville. The churchโ€™s journey began when Deacon Nelson LeBlanc donated land at South Lamar Street and Frankโ€™s Alley for the first church building. It was led by its first pastor, Reverend Charles Banks, who guided the congregation in faith and growth.

In the 1920s, after a fire caused by a lightning strike destroyed the first church, Reverend R.H. Willis ensured that its mission continued by rebuilding the church you see in the photo below.

From 1932 to 1969, under the leadership of Reverend A.J. Mays, the church expanded its influence tremendously. Over the 37 years, new ministries were established, 7th District Baptist Association Conferences were hosted, Red Cross war fund drives were organized during WWII, and the church choir was featured on local radio broadcasts.

The church continued to grow under Reverend George Lewis, who brought to fruition the current church building that is standing today. The expansion continued under Reverend Henry Maze, who led for 32 years, purchasing additional land for growth, overseeing renovations, and adding the porch and steeple, further enhancing the churchโ€™s presence.

Over the past 130 years, a dozen men have led the church, each leaving a legacy of faith and service. Today, Mount Triumph Baptist Church remains committed to its mission, offering ministries that provide addiction recovery support, grief counseling, voter registration assistance, and educational programs for those pursuing equivalency diplomas.

This Sunday, Reverend Willie Williams, Jr. is extending a warm invitation to everyone to celebrate the churchโ€™s 130th Anniversary!
