_*The Discipline of Forbearance*_

*Ephesians 4:2*
*Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love*

Sometimes back I watched a video clip on social media. In the clip, a uniformed and armed soldier was being harassed and slapped by a civilian. Apparently, the soldier owed the civilian a few thousand shillings (worth less than 1USD). The civilian was so enraged and oblivious of the harm that the soldier could inflict on him if he chose to. And yet, the soldier quietly endured the embarrassment, pain and public ridicule without fighting back. Whether it was because of his professional discipline or not, I was astounded by his forbearance.

Forbearance is the quality of being patient and tolerant, especially when dealing with difficult or annoying people. It involves showing restraint and self-control, even when faced with provocation or adversity.

In the Bible, we see examples of forbearance in the lives of:
- Moses, who patiently endured the complaints and rebellions of the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus 17:1-7).
- David, who refused to retaliate against King Saul, even when given the opportunity (1 Samuel 24:1-22).
- Jesus, who endured the cross, despising its shame, and prayed for His persecutors (Luke 23:34).

Forbearance is essential for daily living and interactions within and without the Christian community. It helps us to:
- Build stronger relationships by showing patience and understanding towards others.
- Avoid unnecessary conflicts and disputes.
- Demonstrate the love and character of Christ, even in difficult situations.
- Grow in spiritual maturity and humility.

To cultivate forbearance, we can:
- Ask God to give us a heart of patience and love.
- Practice self-control and restraint in our daily interactions.
- Seek to understand and empathize with others, rather than reacting impulsively.
- Reflect on the examples of forbearance in the Bible and seek to apply them to our own lives.

Dear God, help me to cultivate the discipline of forbearance, that I may reflect Your love and character in all my interactions.

*Matthew 18:20*

*For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.*

What a powerful conditional promise! God is bound by His word. Where best can this condition be met than in the family? Praying together as a family is a powerful way to strengthen relationships, deepen faith, and create lasting bonds. When we come together in prayer, we invite God's presence into our homes and lives.

It is a common adage that: A family that prays together, stay together. Family prayer fosters unity and love among family members. You can see a family that spends time together in the presence of God.

Praying together as a family sets a godly example for children. It models for them to love and fear the Lord. Lessons that are of critical importance to live a prosperous life. But children are also some our greatest prayer warriors.
*Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court. (Psalms 127:3-5)*

It encourages open communication and resolves conflicts. Because prayer demands confession to God and to one another, family prayer times provide a platform for dealing with any disagreements in healthy nonconfrontational way.

Marriages are strengthened because family prayer time promotes understanding and mutual respect. In my own family, we build intimacy with my wife as we pray together.

Praying together provides comfort and support during challenging times. What a comfort it is to know that those closest to you pray with and for you.

Reflection Questions:
- What are the benefits I've experienced from praying with my family?
- How can I prioritize family prayer in our daily routine?
- What are the challenges we face, and how can prayer help overcome them?

Action Step:
Establish a regular family prayer time, even if it's just a few minutes each day. Encourage participation from all family members, and watch God's love and unity grow in your home.

*Esther 4:16*

*Go, gather together all the Jews... and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do.*

The Bible is awash with examples of men and women that needed others to stand with them in prayer. It is a humbling and yet rewarding experience to pray with others. In Esther's darkest hour, she called upon her community to unite in prayer and fasting. Her example teaches us vital lessons about corporate prayer.

How corporate prayer works (some of these are repeated for emphasis because we saw them in the previous episode):

1. Sense a need for God: Recognize your limitations and acknowledge God's sovereignty.

2. Correct motivation: Esther's motivation was pure - to save her people. Our prayers should stem from a desire to honor God and further His kingdom.

3. Vulnerability: Esther shared her burden with others, demonstrating humility and trust.

4. Joint action: Esther understood the power of collective prayer, mobilizing her community to seek God together.

5. Belief in God's promises: Esther trusted in God's faithfulness, despite uncertain circumstances.

6. Trust the team: Esther relied on her attendants and community to stand with her in prayer.

Reflection Questions:
- What burdens am I carrying alone? Who can I share them with?
- What motivates my prayers - personal gain or God's glory?
- Am I willing to be vulnerable and trust others in prayer?

If you're not familiar with the story of Esther, read chapter 5 through 9, and you will see the amazing wisdom God gave her and how through this intervention the Jewish nation was saved from sure death. God answers joint prayers.

Action Step:
Organize a corporate prayer gathering, inviting fellow believers to unite in seeking God's guidance and intervention.

*Daniel 2:17-18*

*Daniel went to his house and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah to pray for God's mercy...*

In our walk with God, prayer is often a personal, private conversation. However, there are times when we need to join forces with others, seeking God's guidance and wisdom together.

Daniel's story illustrates the power of corporate prayer. Faced with King Nebuchadnezzar's daunting demand, Daniel gathered his friends to pray for God's mercy. United, they sought divine insight.

There is a powerful statement when we pray with others or ask others to pray with us.
- We acknowledge our limitations, recognizing the value of others' insights.
- We demonstrate humility, admitting our need for help.
- We experience unity, as we seek God's will together.

When we pray together:
1. We have a shared burden this distributing the weight of concern and easing individual struggles.
2. We have collective wisdom by combining perspectives and gaining deeper understanding.
3. Our faith is amplified. This strengthens trust in God's sovereignty.
4. There is mutual support. It fosters accountability and encouragement.

Daniel's friends prayed, and God responded (Daniel 2:19-20). The Holy Spirit revealed the king's dream and its interpretation.

Reflection Questions:
1. When have you experienced the power of corporate prayer?
2. Who can you invite to pray with you in times of need?
3. How can you prioritize united prayer in your community?

*_Action Step:_*
Schedule a regular corporate prayer time with friends, family, or church members. Approach God's throne together, seeking His wisdom and mercy.

*Habakkuk 2:20*

*But the Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.*

Is Worship just an event in the Sunday service program? Is Worship merely a style of singing? Worship is the foundation of prayer. Worship is recognizing God's holiness and majesty. As we approach Him, we must cultivate reverence, acknowledging His greatness.

_Worship is humility._ It is bowing your heart first, and your knees. If you find it hard to kneel down before the Lord, you are too proud to worship - *Psalm 95:6.*
_Worship is purity._ Confess all sin and seek His cleansing. You cannot come into the presence of holy God with a stained heart - *1 John 1:9.*
_Worship is awe._ It is recognizing and being blown away by God's power and majesty. Do you get overwhelmed just thinking who God is? *Psalm 111:2-4.*

When we worship:
1. Our intimacy with God deepens. We are drawn closer to God's heart.
2. Our perspective shifts. We focus on God's greatness, not our problems.
3. We are transformed. Our minds are renewed, aligning with God's will.
4. It fosters gratitude. We acknowledge God's goodness and blessings.

Reflection Questions:
1. How do you prepare your heart for worship in prayer?
2. What practices help you maintain reverence in God's presence?
3. How has worship impacted your relationship with God?

*Action Step:*
Establish a personal worship routine:
1. Start prayer with Scripture reading or singing.
2. Take time for silent reflection and confession.
3. Incorporate physical expressions (kneeling, lifting hands).

As you cultivate reverence in worship, experience the transformative power of God's presence everyday, all the time. Worship is a lifestyle!

*Jeremiah 33:3*

*Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know*

In prayer, we often focus on speaking to God, but true communion requires listening. The Lord desires a conversational relationship, speaking to us through His Logos (Scripture) and Rhema (personal revelation).
*Logos:* Meditate on Scripture, allowing God's Word to nourish your soul.
*Rhema:* Expect the Holy Spirit to illuminate specific verses, speaking directly to your heart.

We cannot clearly hear God's voice in the cacophony of noise our lives tend to be. Therefore, to hear God's voice:
• Quiet your heart: Find stillness, eliminating distractions.
• Focus on Scripture: Read, reflect, and apply God's Word.
• Listen attentively: Pay attention to impressions, thoughts, and feelings.
• Respond in faith: Obey and trust the leading of the Holy Spirit.

"God is not a dictator, but a conversationalist." - Dallas Willard

Prayer is not a one-way conversation. Expect God to respond, guiding and encouraging you.
"Lord, teach me to listen. Open my ears to Your logos and rhema. May our conversation be meaningful and life-changing. Amen"

_Reflection Questions:_
1. What Scripture has God used to speak to you recently?
2. How do you create space to listen in prayer?
3. What steps will you take to deepen your listening practice?

*Psalms 145:4-7"

*One generation shall praise Your works to another,*
*A d shall declare Your mighty acts.*
*I will meditate on the righteous splendour of Your majesty,*
*And in Your wondrous works.*
*Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts,*
*And I will declare Your greatness.*
*They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness,*
*And shall sing of Your righteousness.*

Imagine a world where none of the scriptures were written and we had rely on oral history alone! Journaling is a powerful prayer discipline that helps deepen our relationship with God. By recording our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, we reflect on His presence in our lives.

Below is an entry from Charles Spurgeon in January 1856. At 21, leading the fastest growing church in London, he was attacked by the press and other leaders who doubted his ways. He wrote:
"O Lord, I am astonished at Thy mercy. Thou hast saved me from despair... Help me to walk worthy of this great salvation. May my heart be filled with Thy love, and my lips with Thy praise."

A good prayer journal has:
• Consistency: Commit to regular journaling.
• Honesty: Share your true emotions and thoughts.
• Scripture: Incorporate Bible verses.
• Reflection: Ponder your experiences.
• Gratitude: Note blessings.

*Reflection Questions:*
1. What am I grateful for today?
2. How has God spoken to me through Scripture?
3. What are my deepest concerns?
4. How can I surrender to God's will?

*Action Step:*
Commit to journaling for 10 minutes daily this week. Record your thoughts, prayers, and reflections, and watch God's presence unfold in your life.
