JESUS PERFUMED
“Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?” (John 12:3-5) I think if Mary came with a worthless perfume and sprayed it on Jesus, she would be applauded by the disciples of Jesus. But what caused this indignation was because she brought a very precious alabaster box of ointment. It was very precious and she poured it all on Jesus. Judas Iscariot spoke and vented out his rage for what this lady had done. I am sure many others who were there shared his sentiments quietly. That’s why in many churches today almost everything is done haphazardly, the church is a shanty structure, the choir’s attire is miserable, the offering baskets are deplorable, the songs that are sung are half baked, they don’t respect time, the sermon is prepared for some few, there is nothing you can point to as their best. Imagine if what this lady brought was a song. Imagine if what this lady brought was a sermon. Why don’t we give Jesus the most precious and the best? I have been to churches which look like chicken pens when the pastor has a palatial residence. I have seen a brother or a sister get into trouble because they have given ‘a lot’ to God. But we should be humble and give God the most precious, the very best of all that we have because even God gave us the best. Jesus is the best gift God gave to the world. Let us give Him the best.
