What does John 14:14 mean?
John 14:14 : "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it." (NKJV)
Other translations:
- "You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." (NIV)
- "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it for you." (ESV)
- " [Yes] I will grant [I Myself will do for you] whatever you shall ask in My Name [as presenting all that I AM]." (AMPC)
Taking the verse in context, we see that the Lord Jesus is comforting His disciples, preparing them for His departure. He promises to send the Holy Spirit and emphasizes the importance of prayer in His name. Then He assures them that He will grant whatever they may ask in His name.
Here's therefore the meaning of John 14:14:
Praying in Jesus' name: Not just mentioning His name, but praying with authority, representing Him, and aligning with His will.
Asking according to God's will: Jesus' name represents His character, nature, and purposes. Prayers must align with God's plans and desires.
Unlimited possibilities: "Anything" implies no limitations; Jesus promises to answer prayers that honor Him.
The Lord also gives these conditions for getting Him to answer prayers: abide in Him (John 15:7), love Him (John 14:15), keep His commandments (John 14:15) and ask in faith (Mark 11:22-24). The implications are:
Intimate relationship: Jesus invites personal, direct communication.
Dependence on Him: Recognize His authority and power.
Confidence in prayer: Assurance of answers when praying in His name.
