WHY SOME PASTORS SUCCEED AND OTHER FAIL
1. CALLING IS EQUAL, PREPARATION IS NOT
“Many are called, but few are chosen.” Matthew 22:14
Most pastors are genuinely called by God, but not all prepare adequately.
WHY SOME SUCCEED?
They submit to training, mentorship, and process
They allow God to shape character before platform
They understand timing and seasons
WHY OTHERS DON’T?
They rush into ministry without formation
They confuse zeal with readiness
They despise preparation and correction
Calling opens the door; preparation keeps you in the room.
2. CHARACTER SUSTAINS WHAT GIFT OPENS
“A bishop then must be blameless…” 1 Timothy 3:2
Many ministries collapse not because of lack of anointing, but failure of character.
SUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Guard integrity (money, s*x, power)
Live what they preach
Fear God more than public opinion
UNSUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Compromise secretly
Manage image instead of soul
Allow pride, greed, or lust to rule
Gifts attract crowds; character keeps God.
3. UNDERSTANDING DIVINE ASSIGNMENT
“He gave some apostles, some prophets…” Ephesians 4:11
Not every pastor is assigned to the same field, people, or mandate.
THOSE WHO SUCCEED
Know their specific calling
Stay within their grace lane
Build according to divine blueprint
THOSE WHO FAIL
Copy other ministries
Compete instead of complete
Build what God never assigned them
Success in ministry is obedience, not popularity.
4. RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD VS. RELIGIOUS ACTIVITY
“They shall all know Me…” Hebrews 8:11
SUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Maintain a living altar (prayer, Word, fasting)
Hear God personally
Minister from intimacy, not routine
STRUGGLING PASTORS
Replace prayer with programs
Preach sermons without presence
Live on yesterday’s revelation
When the secret place dries up, public grace fades.
5. WISDOM IN LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION
“Wisdom is profitable to direct.” Ecclesiastes 10:10
Anointing without wisdom leads to burnout.
PASTORS WHO SUCCEED
Delegate (Exodus 18)
Build structures and systems
Manage people with wisdom and love
PASTORS WHO FAIL
Control everything
Reject counsel
Run ministry emotionally, not strategically
Spiritual work still requires godly structure.
6. HOW THEY HANDLE MONEY
“Faithful in little…” — Luke 16:10
Money does not destroy ministries but mismanagement does.
SUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Practice transparency
Live disciplined lives
Understand stewardship
UNSUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Abuse church funds
Live above means
Turn ministry into personal business
How you handle money reveals your maturity.
7. PRIDE VS. TEACHABILITY
“God resists the proud…” James 4:6
Many pastors stop growing because they stop learning.
PASTORS WHO SUCCEED
Stay teachable
Accept correction
Learn from others
PASTORS WHO FAIL
Become unaccountable
Reject oversight
Assume they “know it all”
The moment a pastor stops learning, decline begins.
8. SPIRITUAL WARFARE AWARENESS
“We wrestle not against flesh and blood…” Ephesians 6:12
Ministry attracts opposition.
SUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Discern spiritual battles
Pray strategically
Cover themselves and members spiritually
FAILING PASTORS
Ignore spiritual warfare
Fight people instead of spirits
Become weary and discouraged
Ministry is spiritual before it is public.
9. ABILITY TO RAISE HELPERS AND SUCCESSORS
“Commit to faithful men…” 2 Timothy 2:2
SUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Raise leaders
Build teams
Multiply impact
UNSUCCESSFUL PASTORS
Hoard power
Fear replacement
Refuse delegation
Ministry that cannot outlive you is incomplete.
10. FAITHFULNESS TO GOD, NOT APPLAUSE OF MEN
“Well done, good and faithful servant…” Matthew 25:21
Some pastors chase relevance instead of righteousness.
THOSE WHO SUCCEED LONG-TERM
Please God first
Stand on truth
Accept seasons of obscurity
THOSE WHO FAIL
Compromise doctrine
Preach what people want
Trade conviction for crowd size
Popularity can be gained overnight; faithfulness is proven over time. Pastors succeed or fail not by how powerful they start, but by how faithfully they walk, grow, and finish.
