The UCB Word For Today
There is no menial work
Monday 30th August 2021
'Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.' (1 Corinthians 10:31)
David said, ‘I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness' (Psalm 84:10).
This has been my- Canon Ebong-prayer too, to be a sweeper in heaven, than a king in hell. Being raised as a clergy children, we were trained to do everything from digging to kitchen chores. We were trained not to despise any work, but to take it as God’s assignment at the time. During my school time, I joined Boys Scouts where the words Biden Powell, “Leave a place better than how you found it.” This motivated and empowered me to become a professional Interior and Landscapes Designer. In all Secondary schools we had been, our staff house was voted and awarded for the best, well maintained residence. While at Bishop Tucker Theological College (now UCU), I happily served as a night watchman and manual labor at Ntawo Farm. At Nairobi International School of Theology (now Africa Leadership University) I served as a freelance electrician and plumber - this was read dirty job, unblocking overflowing toilets etc.! At Makerere University, I transformed the compound for the Chaplain’s house and erected Phase II building and caused the expansion of the Chapel building besides other transformational ministries.
So, how's your attitude towards menial work? Few believers have a background like mine, but each each of us need roll our sleeves up to accomplish menial, basic tasks - changing oil in the car, changing ink cartridges in printers, or changing pampers, house chores and the like. Domestic servants are assistants, not the owners of your house, ladies and gentlemen. Work with them not them working for you!
When you 'serve the Lord with gladness' (Psalm 100:2 NKJV) you find joy in everyday tasks because you remember who you're working for.
Be fulfilled and remain blessed.
