CHAPTER 7
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONVERTS, DISCIPLES, AND SONS
Romans 8:14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
The Christian journey is not a single moment but a progressive transformation. Many believers stop at conversion, some grow into discipleship, but only a few mature into spiritual sons and daughters who reflect the character of the Father.
An old proverb says:
“The beginning of a journey is not the destination.”
Likewise, conversion is the beginning of salvation, but spiritual maturity is the destination God desires.
1. CONVERTS — THOSE WHO HAVE RECEIVED THE GOSPEL
A convert is someone who has responded to the message of salvation and turned to Christ. The word convert means to change direction.
When Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost, many people were converted.
Acts 2:38 “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.”
Conversion involves:
Repentance
Faith in Christ
Forgiveness of sins
However, conversion alone does not produce maturity. Jesus commanded the Church not only to convert people but to make disciples.
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.”
An old proverb explains this clearly: "A seed planted is not yet a tree.”
Conversion is the planting of the seed, but growth still needs to happen.
Characteristics of Converts
1. They Experience the Joy of Forgiveness
Holy Bible — 1 John 2:12
“I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you.”
New converts rejoice in the mercy and grace of God.
2. Their Understanding of Scripture Is Still Limited
They often depend heavily on spiritual leaders for guidance because they are still learning the foundations of the faith.
3. Their Faith Is Still Fragile
Trials, temptations, and persecutions can easily shake them.
Jesus described this condition in the Parable of the Sower.
Matthew 13:21 "Yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while.”
Converts are like newborn babies in the kingdom who still need spiritual nourishment and guidance.
2. DISCIPLES — THOSE WHO FOLLOW AND LEARN FROM CHRIST
A disciple is a believer who intentionally follows Jesus and learns His ways. The word disciple means learner or follower.
Jesus said:
John 8:31 “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.”
A disciple moves beyond salvation and begins to grow in obedience and transformation.
Characteristics of Disciples
1. Commitment to the Word of God
Disciples build their lives on Scripture. They do not merely hear the Word—they apply it.
James 1:22 "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
2. A Life of Obedience
Disciples learn to obey Christ even when obedience requires sacrifice.
Holy Bible — Luke 9:23
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily.”
Discipleship involves daily surrender.
3. Growth in Character
Disciples gradually develop the character of Christ.
Paul describes this transformation:
Galatians 5:22–23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”
Character formation is a major part of discipleship.
4. Service in the Kingdom
Disciples begin serving others and contributing to the mission of the Church. They move from receiving to giving.
An old proverb says:
“A student who learns well eventually becomes a teacher.”
3. SONS — THOSE WHO REFLECT THE HEART OF THE FATHER
The highest level of spiritual maturity is sonship.
A son is not merely someone who follows instructions but someone who shares the heart, character, and mission of the Father.
Paul describes this level of maturity:
Romans 8:14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
Sons are guided by the Spirit and live in alignment with God’s will.
Characteristics of Sons
1. Deep Relationship With God
Sons know God intimately. They do not serve God only out of duty but out of love and relationship.
Galatians 4:6 “God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’”
“Abba” expresses deep intimacy and trust.
2. Spiritual Responsibility
Sons carry the responsibilities of the Father’s house. They participate actively in God’s work.
Jesus demonstrated this when He said:
Luke 2:49 "Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
Sons do not merely attend church—they advance the kingdom.
3. Spiritual Reproduction
Sons eventually become spiritual fathers and mothers. They raise disciples and guide others into maturity.
Paul said:
Holy Bible — 2 Timothy 2:2
“Commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
This is the multiplication of spiritual life.
4. Alignment With the Father’s Heart
Sons understand the desires of the Father. Their priorities reflect God’s priorities.
Jesus demonstrated perfect sonship when He said:
John 5:19 "The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do.”
Sons live in alignment with God’s will.
THE PROGRESSION OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH
The Christian journey progresses through three important stages:
Converts → Disciples → Sons
Converts receive salvation.
Disciples learn the ways of Christ.
Sons carry the heart and mission of the Father.
God’s desire is not only to produce converts but to raise mature sons and daughters who reflect His character and advance His kingdom.
An old proverb summarizes this truth beautifully:
“A child receives an inheritance, but a mature son manages it.”
The Church becomes strong when believers move beyond conversion into discipleship and ultimately grow into sons who carry the Father’s heart.
