Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. -C.S. Lewis Humility. Humility is a quality many leaders desire to possess, but it is often an illusive yet beautiful idea that sounds great on paper, yet seems mysteriously out of reach to anyone attempting to find it. Reflections from the Plenary

If only we allowed the Word of God to transform us, then the challenges we face would be easier to deal with including gender injustice.

Our faith is practiced in and contextualised according to our respective cultures; how can we transform this as religious leaders.

How do we separate the spiritual from the cultural. When Paul forexample speaks the way he does about women in the New Testament; is his motivation spiritual or cultural!

Reflections from the Panel Discussion

Can we (as faith leaders) have our own definition of Gender and NOT necessarily what the world order has defined it as! Why should the world impose a particular definition on the church!

Without talking about creation, we cannot talk about redemption; where does the persuit for gender justice fit into God's purpose! The bible says in Gen. 1:27 ...men and women He created them... We therefore, cannot achieve gender justice without reference to this fact.

The Bible can be used to advocate for or against Gender Justice depending on who is reading it. Bible authors wrote the scriptures in view of the socio-cultural context of their time. However, faith leaders today have the capacity to bring about gender justice for both men and women through the interpretation of scripture in view of God's plan and purpose.

Panel Discussion on the following questions

1. How can we build a community of women and men in the church to serve as a core to the calling, nature and mission of the church, especially as a response to the call for unity?

2. How can we reconstruct an understanding of being men and women that aims at building mutual partnerships for gender justice as part of the justice and peace agenda?

Reflection Verses on difficult Biblical Gendered Texts by Rev. Doctor Lydia Mwaniki

I Corinthians 11:7: For a man...is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.

Genesis 1:27: So God created man in His own image; in His image He Created him; male and female he created them.

What is your take on these two verses?

Other verses for reflection:

I Corinthians 11:1-6
I Corinthians 14:34-35
I Timothy 2:11-12
I Corinthians 11:3
Ephesians 5:22-24
