Church Of Uganda

Church Of Uganda The Church of Uganda is a Jesus-loving, Bible-believing, Spirit-filled Anglican Church engaged in the mission of Jesus Christ in today's world. Canon).

Origins

Uganda is a spiritually rich country. Henry Stanley, British explorer and journalist,King Mutesa welcomes Stanley met King Mutesa, the Kabaka (king) of Buganda (a central Ugandan tribe) in April 1875. After sharing the simple story of Christianity with King Mutesa, he became very enthusiastic about Christianity and asked Stanley to write a letter to Queen Victoria of England, appealing fo

r missionaries. The letter was published in The Daily Telegraph newspaper in England on 15th November 1875.

“Oh! That some pious, practical missionary would come here! What a field and harvest ripe for the sickle of civilisation….It is the practical Christian tutor who can teach people how to become Christians, cure their diseases, construct dwellings…and turn his hand to anything – like a sailor – this is the man who is wanted….You need not fear to spend money on such…a mission…”[1]

So, two years later, Christianity first came to Uganda when eight missionaries from the Church Missionary Society arrived in 1877. The Christian faith was originally preached only to the immediate members of the court of King Mutesa, Kabaka (king) of Buganda. Early Martyrs

King Mwanga sentences martyrsKing Mutesa’s successor, King Mwanga, “became increasingly angry as he realized that the first converts put loyalty to Christ above the traditional loyalty to the king. Martyrdoms began in 1885. Mwanga first forbade anyone to go near a Christian mission on pain of death, but finding himself unable to cool the ardour of the converts, resolved to wipe out Christianity.” [2]

Among the early martyrs of Uganda was English Bishop, James Hannington, the first Anglican Bishop of the Eastern Equatorial province. Bishop Hannington approached the Buganda Kingdom from the East. Unfortunately, unknown to him, there was a Baganda belief that its enemies would approach the kingdom from the eastern route. So, the Kabaka (king) sent warriors to meet this encroaching enemy. Before they killed Hannington on 29th October 1885, he is reported to have said, “Tell the Kabaka (king) that I die for Uganda.” These words are inscribed on his tomb at the Namirembe Cathedral. On 3rd June 1886, King Mwanga ordered the killing of twenty-six of his pages – thirteen Anglicans and twelve Roman Catholics. Today, 3rd June is set aside as a public holiday to commemorate the Martyrs of Uganda. Thousands of people from all over East Africa travel to the site of the martyrdom to remember their courage, sacrifice, and testimony…even unto death. These early Christians were martyred at Namugongo. Their martyrdom produced a martyrsresult entirely opposite of Mwanga’s intentions. The example of these martyrs, who walked to their deaths singing hymns and praying for their enemies, so inspired many of the bystanders that they began to seek instruction from the remaining Christians. Within a few years the original handful of converts had multiplied many times and spread far beyond the court. The martyrs had left the indelible impression that Christianity was truly African, not simply a white man’s religion. Most of the missionary work was carried out by Africans rather that by white missionaries, and Christianity spread steadily. Uganda now has the largest percentage of professed Christians of any nation in Africa.[3]

Revival

In June 1936 the East African Revival began in northeast Rwanda. (Rwanda borders Uganda on the southwest.) It spread rapidly through Burundi, Uganda, Zaire, Tanzania and Kenya. It touched mission schools, churches and villages. The Revival produced deep repentance and changed lives and has continued to be sustained, even through today. It helped to establish a new zeal for enthusiastic holiness in African Christianity. It confronted demonic strongholds, and began to prepare churches to cope with the horrors of massacres and warfare that erupted in later years. Later Martyrs

janani-luwum-1Renewed persecution of Christians broke out again in the 1970′s by the military dictator, Idi Amin, who had Islamic sympathies. The Christian resilience in the face of brutal torture and death demonstrated the continued influence of the Namugongo martyrs and the deep, vital, and abiding faith among so many who had been influenced by the East African Revival. Among the thousands of new martyrs, both Anglican and Roman Catholic, was Janani Luwum, Archbishop of the (Anglican) Church of Uganda. Today, 36% of the 30 million people of Uganda are Anglicans, and 56% are eighteen years old and younger. Mission-minded

The Church of Uganda, with its rich and firm spiritual history, has offered and continues to offer a dynamic and vital faith to peoples around the world. Already, this is a part of Anglican history in Uganda. In 1893 Canon Apollo Kivebulaya was the first to take the Gospel to the people of Eastern Congo. Ugandans such as William and Sala Nagenda, Erica Sabiiti, Festo Kivengere, Janani Luwum, John Wilson, Misaeri Kauma, Edward Muhima, and the current Archbishop, Henry Luke Orombi, have witnessed before world leaders. In 1996, John Sentamu, a Ugandan Anglican, was consecrated a Bishop in the Church of England, first as the Bishop of Birmingham, and now as the Archbishop of York.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has commended the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt Rev Onesimus Asiimwe, for his spiritual and socio-economic transformation in the Diocese.

Archbishop Kaziimba made the remarks today while presiding over celebrations marking three years of Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe’s episcopal ministry in North Kigezi Diocese and bidding farewell to the Christians of the Diocese during a service held at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano.

The Archbishop praised Bishop Onesimus for his effective leadership and his growing role in the wider Anglican Communion. He commended him for representing the Church of Uganda internationally as the East Africa Regional Secretary for GAFCON, serving as a member of the Provincial Tribunal, and faithfully representing the Archbishop at several international conferences.

He further applauded the Bishop for the progress made in completing the diocesan cathedral, strengthening the education sector within the Diocese, and deepening spiritual renewal through evangelistic crusades, prayer, and fasting.

Archbishop Kaziimba also cautioned critics who oppose the election of clergy from other dioceses to serve as bishops in areas where they were not born. He emphasized that the Church is universal and that leadership should be based on calling, qualification, and service.

“We are a global Church where anyone can serve anywhere as long as they qualify. I was a Bishop of Mityana while I was born in Mukono. I am very grateful that you welcomed Bishop Onesimus and you are supporting him greatly.” Archbishop Kaziimba said.

In his remarks, Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe expressed gratitude to Archbishop Kaziimba for his servant leadership and encouragement to the people of North Kigezi Diocese following the passing of the former Bishop, Benon Magezi.

He commended the Archbishop for championing the vision of self-sustainability within the Church of Uganda, citing major achievements such as completing and settling several infrastructure projects, including clearing the UGX 50 billion debt on Church House and constructing a guesthouse at the Archbishop’s residence to address accommodation challenges.

Bishop Onesimus also praised Archbishop Kaziimba’s commitment to spiritual renewal across the Province through his passionate preaching and mobilization of Christians for fervent prayer.

He further commended the Archbishop for strengthening the Church’s international engagement by representing the Church of Uganda in global Anglican forums, including GAFCON, and advocating for a renewed focus on Scripture and the Gospel within the Anglican Communion.

Speaking on behalf of the Christian community, the Diocesan Head of Laity, Mr. Turyabe Abel Matiita, commended Bishop Onesimus for visionary leadership that has strengthened evangelism, education, and community development in the Diocese. He pledged continued cooperation from the laity to support the Diocese’s mission and ministry.

The Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, Jessica Alupo, who was represented by the Minister of Security, Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, commended the Church for its contribution to the socio-economic transformation of the country. She pledged continued government support through development initiatives such as Emyooga and Parish Development Model and encouraged Christians to embrace them for improved household incomes.

Over UGX 200M was collected from the Thanksgiving Service.

Among the dignitaries who attended the celebrations were the Bishop of Busoga Diocese, Grace Lubaale; the Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Yona Katoneene; the Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons Service, Canon Dr. Johnson Byabashaija; the Provincial Chancellor of the Church of Uganda, Canon Naboth Muhairwe; and the Honorary Consul of Comoros to Uganda, Prof. Alex Bashasha. Thousands of Christians from across the Diocese also attended the celebrations.

‎Couples Urged to Build Families on the Foundation of Christ

NAMIREMBE, 11th March 2026: Couples have been urged to build their families on the strong foundation of Christ in order to promote unity, peace, and stability in homes, the Church, and the nation.

‎The call was made by the Archbishop of Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, in a message delivered by the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, Rt Rev Jackson Frederick Baalwa, during the Provincial Mary’s Day Commissioning and Thanksgiving Service held today at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe.

‎Under the theme “Families Anchored in Christ for Unity, Stability and Peace, Archbishop Kaziimba emphasized that the Mothers’ Union plays a vital role in strengthening families and nurturing Christian values. He noted that the Mothers’ Union’s five objectives focus significantly on parenting and family life, since families remain central to the development of both the Church and society.

‎He urged married couples to remain vigilant against the challenges facing families today, particularly divorce and domestic violence, which he said have created fear among many young women about committing to marriage.

‎“Girls these days ask what they can do to give birth to children without getting married. Of course you know what they have in mind, but such approaches do not bring progress to marriage. We need to build families on a strong foundation and set a good example with homes anchored in Christ.” He said.

‎He further noted that the quality of a nation is determined by the quality of its people, noting that homes serve as incubators where children are nurtured and shaped for the future.

‎“We are born in homes and expected to nurture children well. If families fail to play their role, the hope for humanity will fade away,” he said.

‎The Chief Guest, Rt Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, applauded the Mothers’ Union for promoting the value of marriage and family in society.

‎Kadaga warned that neglect by some parents has left children vulnerable to harmful influences such as drug abuse, which has contributed to rising cases of mental illness among young people.

‎She also urged mothers to take an active role in environmental conservation through participation in tree-planting initiatives.

‎The Provincial Mothers’ Union President, Mrs. Grace Murengezi, called on members to emulate Mary's virtues of kindness, humility, and resilience in advancing the ministry of the Mothers’ Union.

‎Murengyezi also introduced a plan to construct a boys’ hostel worth two billion shillings at Namirembe-Bakuli and encouraged members to support the project as an income-generating initiative for the Church.

‎Maama Margaret Kaziimba, Clergy, Mothers’ Union leaders from various Dioceses, Bishops’ wives, the Provincial Fathers’ Union President Mr. Samuel Bakutana, among other guests attended the function.

‎ Dioceses across the province are expected to celebrate Mary’s Day on 25 March 2026.
