Sister Ajilong Released as Area Organisation Advisor:

The Africa Central Area Presidency recently announced changes to the Area Organization Advisors in the Area.

Sisters Stella Mary Ajilong (Kampala); Delphine Muzama (Lubumbashi); Sister Yeweinshet Bezu Biru (Addis Ababa); and Sister Claudelia Njampou (Douala) will be released effective March 31, 2024 after three years of faithful service. In announcing the releases, the Africa Central Area Presidency expressed their appreciation for the love and commitment of these sisters to train and support the sister leaders in the Area.

In the same communication, the Area Presidency announced the calling of Sister Christianne Bankanina of Lubumbashi, DRC and Sister Celestine Mukuba of Mbuji-Mayi, DRC as new Area Organization Advisers effective April 1, 2024. These newly called sisters join Sisters Angelique Tarr (Kinshasa), Vulfrida Simiyu (Nairobi) and Epiphanie Mabiala (Brazzaville) who will continue their service.

Area Organization Advisers are Latter-day Saint women called to provide training and support to leaders of stake Relief Society, Young Women and Primary organization presidencies. They work under the direction of, and report directly to the Area Presidency.

To accommodate rising numbers of missionaries (now at more than 72,000), The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will open 36 new missions on July 1, 2024. This puts the total number of missions at 450—the highest number in Church history.

Church leaders will create these new missions from existing missions. This adjustment will allow mission leaders to have more interaction with missionaries and more missionaries to be assigned to wards and branches.

More missionaries are serving now than the 69,000 who were sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase is thanks in large part to Church President and prophet Russell M. Nelson's April 2022 call for more missionaries.

Dear brothers, sisters and friends, we have the cherished opportunity this coming weekend to attend or watch our semiannual general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! General conference weekends are two of my favorite weekends of the year. How I love meeting in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City with all who gather there.

This weekend, however, I will be watching general conference through technology just as most of you will. Three weeks ago, I fell and injured the muscles in my lower back. This episode has reminded me of the reality that things sometimes change quickly in our lives. This photo of my counselors and me was taken at the celebration of my 99th birthday. Two days later, I fell.

Thankfully, my healing is progressing. But as my physician says, “We don’t have much data on how 99-year-olds recover from an injury like this one, so I am prescribing a slow, careful approach to healing so that you achieve a full recovery.” Having prescribed just such a course of action for many of my own patients years ago, I feel duty-bound to follow doctor’s orders.

I am still not able to sit in a chair for long periods of time. However, I am hoping to record my general conference message and look forward to participating in this marvelous October 2023 general conference through technology.

I pray that each of us, wherever we may be, will approach this sacred weekend with our hearts full of gratitude for the privilege of hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed by His servants. May this general conference be a time of joy and spiritual rejuvenation for you. I know that it will be for me!

Russell M. Nelson
President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
