GOD IS CALLING US TO DISCIPLESHIP
The Bible reveals that God wants all people in all nations to become disciples of Jesus. This is not only for a selected few. Everyone has the right to hear the message about the kingdom of God and the right to choose whether to belong to the kingdom or not. All through the Bible we see that discipleship is the way to go.
• Jesus discipled people.
The ministry of Jesus was focussed on making disciples and he placed greater value on those who were committed to learning and knowing the truth.
• Jesus commanded Discipleship.
In the Great Commission, the Lord handed over his ministry to his disciples and specifically instructed that when he is gone they should focus on 'discipling the nations'.
• God still chooses learning over serving.
God is still calling us to discipleship, not to fleshly activities that only gratify our emotions but have no eternal profit for God's people
Luke 10:38-42
Jesus and his disciples continued their journey. They arrived at a certain village. There, a woman called Martha asked Jesus to come into her home.
Martha had a sister called Mary. Mary sat down near Jesus. She was listening to the things that he was teaching.
But Martha was thinking to herself, ‘I cannot do all this work alone.’ So she went to Jesus. She said, ‘Master, my sister is not helping me with the work. She has left me to do it alone. You surely do not think that this is right! Tell her that she should help me!’
The Lord Jesus replied, ‘Martha, Martha, you have troubles in your mind about many things. But only one thing is really important. That is what Mary has chosen to do. Nobody will take it away from her.’
# Take note of verse 39:
Martha had a sister called Mary. Mary sat down near Jesus. She was listening to the things that he was teaching.
• Mary chose between being a disciple and being a worker serving people and ministering to their fleshly or emotional needs.
# Notice Jesus' response in verse 42 -
But only one thing is really important. That is what Mary has chosen to do. Nobody will take it away from her.’
• One thing is really important.
Discipleship is that ONE THING that God wants us to commit to, not Church activities. Devoting all of your life to learning and knowing the truth is the wisest choice anyone can make.
Philippians 3:8
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ.
• The Lord does not bid us to join the workforce of Martha's Service. THE CALLING OF GOD is a higher calling. The priority ought to be on Discipleship - learning and becoming like Jesus our Master.
• If you enroll as a worker in your local Church, just know that it is not the bidding of the Lord, it is the calling of men.
• The gains of discipleship are eternal.
It comes with an eternal reward, not temporary gain. It is important to note that eternal rewards are usually not always physical. They manifest from inside out, not from outside in.
2 Corinthians 4:18
while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.)
• The reward for serving men.
The calling of men comes with carnal rewards and gratifications from men. E.g. Awards, appointments, positions, titles, certificates, testimonials, etc.
For many people, that's why they join the workforce of the local Church.
• The calling of men also comes with much troubles. Many have zealously devoted their lives to religious activities thinking that they are in the service of the Lord. Some end up leaving bitter instead of better. Others have lost their marriages and their families. Still some were stressed out, became sick, and even died, not for the service of Christ and His Church, but for the service of men and their organisational structures.
Choose to be a disciple of Christ today. If you're making that choice today, please leave a comment on this post.
