SOME WORK TO DO LADIES & GENTLEMEN
Uganda — The number of girls joining prostitution is increasing in the country.
Under the guise of offering them jobs in the city, unscrupulous people are taking young girls from their homes and forcing them into prostitution, according to a survey.
The survey which was released last year by the Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL), the number of girls ending up as young pr******tes has increased from 12,000 to 18,000 over the last seven years.
The study dubbed commercial s*xual exploitation of children established that s*xual exploitation is more prevalent in urban centres.
The study also found that the age at which the children were getting involved in commercial s*x was being lowered although most of the victims were between 14 and 17 years.
The study was carried out in Kampala, Masaka, Lyantonde, Kalangala, Gulu and Lira districts.
Others are Busia, Bugiri, Kasese and Mbarara. The survey showed that some districts served as sources while others were transit and destination areas.

Real Life story fro the Monitor:

“One night, I went with a client to his home along Jinja Road expecting to offer him the services we usually give. We reached his home but I was surprised when he told me that he had another job he wanted me to do,” Ms Hajara Mukyaala, reformed s*x worker, narrates.

Ms Mukyaala, 27, and mother of three, says at that moment she was scared to the extent that she thought her client could kill her. “He went to a drawer, pulled out a big case and ordered me to open it. I was shocked to see a body with a bullet wound,” she narrated her ordeal. “Do not be scared, this is a body of my wife and I want you to wash it and dress it properly,” she quotes her ruthless client.

Ms Mukyaala says she did not hesitate and asked her client to provide her with gloves. But there was none. “I diligently did the work with my bare hands. He paid me Shs20,000 and left me to go back home. But during the trying moment of the 30-minute job, my mind was home - thinking about my children I had locked in my two-roomed house.”

Mercy, just 17 years old, a senior five student at a local high school in Kampala who prefers her name and school to be anonymous for matters of reputation, took a prostitution job last year in order to make enough money to enable her to sit the Uganda Certificate of Education exam, an exam similar to the SAT in the United States.

Recent research published in The Lancet, an international medical journal (24th March, 2012) revealed that commercial s*x workers in Uganda have one of the highest rates of HIV infections in the world. 37 % of Ugandan S*x workers are HIV Positive.
