Matthew 23:23 (KJV); Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cu**in, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

OF RELIGION AND WEIGHTIER MATTERS

Religion is a spirit. Some assume that its face is only of men in long garb and overflowing robes. However, the religious spirit can also be functional in tongue speaking demon-chasing “Pentecostals”. In fact, it is possible to have a more religious “Pentecostal” than a man professing one of the world’s religions.

Why must we be cautious of the spirit of religion?

Throughout scripture, Christ demonstrated His abhorrence for this spirit. He commonly addressed religious men with the words, ‘Woe unto you!’

Is it because He did not love them? No. But the spirit of religion is very serious and one of its primary dangers is explained in our theme scripture. The Bible reveals to us that it omits the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy and faith.

This means that in anything pertaining to doctrine, the spirit of religion will always downplay what is more important and amplify what is inconsequential.

For example, the spirit of religion will split theological hairs over whether Jesus died on a tree or on a cross ignoring the much weightier issue of His death and resurrection.

In Hosea 6:6, the Bible says, “For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” The spirit of religion will cause a man to regard sacrifice [what he can do for God] above what God can do and reveal to Him.

God has called us to live beyond religion and to embrace the liberties of faith and the power of a personal relationship with Him.

Hallelujah!

Here are eight keys that have helped me develop a more powerful and effective prayer life. I hope they will encourage you to make 2022 a year of prayer.

1. Know to whom you are speaking.
Prayer is a conversation with God, and every conversation begins by addressing the person to whom you are speaking by name. Jesus begins with “Our Father in heaven.” He focuses on a distinct person — the Heavenly Father with whom he has a personal relationship. We share the same right to call God “Father,” and there are times when we need to talk with our Abba Father, Daddy God. But God is three distinct persons in One: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

I find it helpful in my prayer times to focus on which of the Holy Trinity I need to talk to. Often I talk to Jesus, the friend who is closer than a brother and the Savior of my soul. Other times I cry out to the Holy Spirit, who fills and empowers me to do the tasks Father God has called me to do. Having a distinct sense of who I am speaking to helps me formulate what I want to say and how I want to say it.

2. Thank him.
A heartfelt thank you is always a great conversation starter. Like any parent, God loves to see that we have grateful hearts. But more importantly, as we take the time to praise God for all He has done in the past — the answered prayers, the impossible situations overcome, the healings and grace — our faith to believe for even greater answers to prayer grows stronger and more confident. Praise opens the gates of heaven and should always be part of our alone time with God.

3. Ask for God’s will.
The Lord’s Prayer is not the only place where Jesus role-modeled a heart of obedience and submission to the will of God over his own desires and needs. In the Garden of Gethsemane, only hours before Jesus’ crucifixion, he would once again pray, “not my will, but yours be done.” In a world where right and wrong are frequently confused and the future is so uncertain, it can be hard to know how to pray or what to ask

James 4:2-3 (KJV); Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

PRAYING THE SCRIPTURES III

Lust frustrates prayer and any answers we seek from God. Any prayer grounded in lust goes unanswered. Like our theme scripture says, you lust and you have not. Every time you lust, you separate yourself from your answer to prayer.

Two people may pray for the same thing yet one is lusting and the other is not.

For example, a man may ask God for a promotion at his workplace so that he can find a reason to show off to friends and family; the job is his opportunity to rub his success in the face of those who thought he would never make it in life. That is prayer made in lust.

On the other hand, another man may be trusting God for a promotion so that he can be a blessing to the kingdom of God. He sees his workplace as an altar and an opportunity to preach the gospel in the marketplace.

The thing about praying in lust is that some people never even realise it because they are too consumed by their needs. They are not very conscious about the deepest convictions of their hearts.

However, when you pray scripture, it helps you distinguish purpose from lust.

In Hebrews 4:12, the Bible says, “For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Word causes us to separate our personal selfish needs from the needs of heaven. It weeds out the desires of the flesh and aligns us to the heartbeat of God.

2 Peter 3:16(KJV); As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

THE RIGHTFUL APPLICATION OF THE SCRIPTURES

If you study the context of our theme scripture, you will realise that Peter was making reference to the teachings of Paul and his message of the grace of God. He makes it clear that some of these teachings were hard to understand and as such, unlearned and unstable men applied them to their own destruction.

This teaches us that it is important to understand Paul’s message if you are to rightfully apply the scriptures.

If you apply them the wrong way, you destroy not just yourself but those around you.

What then is the rightful application of the scriptures?

You can only apply the Word the right way when you study it with the consciousness that you are a new creature in Christ. The understanding of present truth is the starting point of the rightful application of the scriptures.

The people in our theme scripture destroy themselves because they did not understand the message of God’s grace.

Present truth will teach you to rightfully apply the scriptures on healing, to understand that divine health is your portion because you were already healed (1 Peter 2:24).
Present truth will teach you to rightfully apply the scriptures on righteousness, because you will understand that your sins were forgiven and righteousness is a gift (Romans 4:5).
Present truth will teach you to apply the right scriptures on deliverance because you will understand that you have been translated from the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of God’s son (Colossians 1:13).

Hallelujah!
