Over 400 attendees from 72 countries spent four days in Vienna at the WSA Global Congress 2026. Scaling Digital Solutions. For People & Planet. Founders, policymakers, UN organisations, investors, researchers, creatives and civil society actors, all in one room asking the same uncomfortable questions about digital innovation and real-world impact.

This wasn't a typical startup conference. It was honest dialogue, people openly sharing failures, funding realities and lessons from building impactful tech in vastly different contexts. Less monologue, more conversation on eye level.

Sessions tackled digital sovereignty, ethical AI, accessibility and "equity by design." The WSA Townhall Meetings on the UN Global Digital Compact and the WSIS process got into the harder question: how do global policy frameworks actually connect with grassroots innovators? And how can digital ecosystems contribute to the SDGs beyond the rhetoric?

The WSA winning teams pitching was one of the week's inspirational moments, proof that purpose-driven innovation is already happening everywhere, from climate resilience and education to healthcare and civic participation. Proofing their relevance UNIDO's Innovation Lab invited selected winning teams to explore direct integration into UNIDO programmes, a rare, concrete bridge between local solutions and international reach.

Workshops went deep on impact measurement, AI strategy, scaling, and one session used playing LEGO to help founders rethink assumptions and navigate pivots.

But fun and human connections are important as well. Morning yoga. Austrian wine at the Heuriger. An Award Ceremony at the Jugendstiltheater at Otto Wagner Areal connecting Beatboxing and Viennese Waltz.

Gender balance on stage was technically not achieved this year. Mostly because there were simply too many brilliant women in the community shaping the conversation to fit them all on a panel.

The Role of Government in Protecting Citizens

The government has a major responsibility to protect all citizens, especially women and children, from violence and abuse. When young men gang up and r**e a young girl, it is not only a crime against one person, but also a crime against humanity and society. Such acts destroy lives, bring trauma, fear, and pain to innocent victims and their families.

The government must ensure that justice is served quickly and fairly. Those boys involved in r**e should be arrested immediately, investigated properly, and punished according to the law. No criminal should be protected because of money, family influence, or political connections.

At the same time, the government should provide protection, medical care, counseling, and emotional support to the young girl who became a victim of r**e. Survivors need safety, healing, and reassurance that society stands with them.

Communities, schools, and parents also have a role to play by teaching young people about respect, discipline, and the importance of protecting girls and women. Violence against women should never be tolerated in any society.

Justice for victims of r**e is important because silence and impunity encourage more crimes. A strong government is one that protects the weak, listens to victims, and ensures that criminals face the consequences of their actions.

The members of Red Army in the 1990s deserve recognition and respect for the sacrifices they made during one of the darkest periods in the history of South Sudan. Many were separated from their families at a very young age, forced to walk long distances, endure hunger, disease, displacement, and the horrors of war while carrying hopes for freedom and a better future for their people.

Today, we salute the comrades who lost their lives along the journey and honor those who are still alive. Their stories remain part of the history and struggle that shaped the nation. Some never returned home, some grew up in refugee camps, and others continued serving their communities in different ways after the war.

The Red Army generation symbolizes resilience, endurance, courage, and sacrifice. Whether remembered through stories, memories, or national history, their contribution should never be forgotten. May the souls of the fallen comrades continue to rest in peace, and may those still alive be blessed with strength, good health, and the opportunity to witness lasting peace, unity, and development in South Sudan. ๐ŸซถโœŒ๏ธ๐Ÿซก๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ

The sycophants of Kiir in Warrap have turned Mr. Hon. Santino Ayuel Longar, the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, into a hotline for endless political begging. Reports say he received more than 1,471 phone calls from Bahr el Ghazal beggars acting as if oil exists in their own states. Instead of focusing on national development and responsible leadership, some individuals spend their entire time chasing personal favors, tribal interests, and handouts from government officials.

This culture of dependency and political sycophancy is one of the reasons why the country continues to struggle. Rather than encouraging productivity, innovation, and accountability, people normalize begging from public officials as though government offices are private family businesses. The Ministry of Petroleum belongs to the people of South Sudan, not to a specific region, tribe, or political group.

What is even more disappointing is the hypocrisy behind these constant calls and pressures. Some of the loudest voices claiming patriotism are the same people overwhelming officials with demands day and night. Instead of asking how oil revenues can improve roads, hospitals, schools, and opportunities for young people, the focus remains on personal gain and tribal calculations.

โ€œYeke thok laputut waya wenรซ liemโ€ perfectly reflects the frustration many citizens feel when national resources become surrounded by noise, opportunism, and endless entitlement. South Sudan cannot move forward if public offices are reduced to centers for favoritism and political begging. Leaders should serve the entire nation equally, while citizens must also stop glorifying dependency and start promoting responsibility, hard work, and accountability.
