FIRE ON A MUD HOUSE: A FORGOTTEN REVIVAL
In the early 1900s, in a small, forgotten village in northern India, the gospel had been preached many times with little result. The people were deeply bound by fear—fear of spirits, fear of curses, fear of sickness. Missionaries came and went, but nothing seemed to change.
One night, a young Indian believer—barely in his twenties—felt burdened to pray. He had no title, no pulpit, and no recognition. He gathered just three other believers into a mud house and said, “We will not sleep tonight. God must visit us.”
They prayed through the night.
Around midnight, something unusual happened. A bright light filled the small room, though no lamp was burning. The believers fell to the floor, overwhelmed by the presence of God. One began to weep uncontrollably, confessing secret sins. Another cried out for the village. The third began to sing in a language he had never learned.
By dawn, the entire house was shaking—not from an earthquake, but from people outside crying, “What must we do to be saved?”
Villagers had seen what looked like fire resting on the roof of the mud house. Thinking it was burning, they ran toward it—only to be struck by conviction. Strong men fell to their knees in the dust. Witches confessed publicly. Stolen items were returned before anyone preached a sermon.
The revival spread like wildfire.
Prayer continued day and night for weeks. The sick were healed without being touched. A blind woman received her sight while simply walking past the prayer house. Drunkards poured out their alcohol. Families that had not spoken in years were reconciled.
What shocked the missionaries most was this:
The revival was not led by them.
It was sustained by prayer, repentance, and hunger for God among ordinary believers.
Years later, historians would write that this small village became a spiritual training ground, sending evangelists across India who carried the fire of revival wherever they went.
All because four young believers refused to sleep and dared to believe that God still answers desperate prayer.
Let us pray
Lord, do it again. Visit our homes, our villages, our cities. Ignite a fire that no man can take credit for—only You. Awaken hearts, break chains, and let revival begin with us. Amen.
