Rest in Peace, The Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika
Bishop of the Diocese of Jinja
The Catholic community in Uganda is mourning the passing of The Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, Bishop of the Diocese of Jinja, who passed away this afternoon.
In an official statement released on Wednesday evening, the Diocese of Jinja confirmed the sad news, noting that details regarding the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Bishop Wamika will be remembered for his deep faith, humility, and unwavering pastoral service. He was a true shepherd and a pillar of spiritual leadership — not only for the Diocese of Jinja but also for the Catholic Church in Uganda at large.
Appointed to succeed Bishop Joseph Willigers, who led the diocese for 43 years, Bishop Wamika made history as the first Ugandan to head the Diocese of Jinja.
Born in Budaka, Pallisa District, he began his early education at St. Peter’s Claver Primary School before joining St. Pius X Minor Seminary, Nagongera, in 1964. He pursued philosophy at Alokolum National Seminary in Gulu and later completed his theological studies at St. Mary’s National Major Seminary, Ggaba.
His passing marks a profound loss to the Catholic Church and the entire nation. His legacy of faith, service, and humility will continue to inspire generations.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
