THE WOMAN AND THE DRAGON IN REVELATION 12

The prophecy of the woman and the dragon in this vision is the great controversy that was announced by God Himself in the book of Genesis. It is written:

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”
Genesis 3:15

The enmity announced there is the great conflict between Christ (the Seed of the woman) and Satan (the DRAGON). Even after humanity sinned, God did not leave mankind under the complete control of Satan.

👉 Revelation 12 explains a summary of this conflict using various symbols.

1. THE WOMAN (Revelation 12:1–2)

The woman represents God’s faithful people throughout history (the church). It is written:

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.”
Ephesians 5:25

👉 Christ is presented as the husband, and the church as the wife.

The woman appeared as follows:

“Clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”

👉 The sun represents the New Covenant (salvation through the blood of Jesus), which was foreshadowed by symbols in the Old Covenant.

👉 The moon represents the Old Covenant (salvation through the blood of animals), which pointed forward to the New Covenant.

Note: The moon reflects light from the sun.

👉 The woman giving birth to a male child symbolizes the nation of Israel, from whom Jesus Christ, the Savior, was born.

👉 The woman referred to here is the church (the people of God), specifically the nation of Israel.

2. THE MALE CHILD (Revelation 12:5)

The male child is Jesus Christ, who was appointed to rule all nations (see Psalm 2:9).
The child was “caught up to God and His throne”—this symbolizes the ascension of Jesus to heaven.

3. THE DRAGON (Revelation 12:3–4)

The red dragon symbolizes Satan working through his agent (pagan Rome), who tried to destroy God’s plan of salvation for His people. Herod, an agent of the Roman government, sought to kill the child Jesus (Matthew 2:16).

👉 “Seven heads and ten horns”
The seven heads represent seven systems of Roman government.
The ten horns represent ten nations that arose after the Roman Empire was divided following A.D. 476.

4. WAR IN HEAVEN (Revelation 12:7–9)

Michael and His angels fighting the dragon symbolizes the war between truth and deception in heaven, between Christ and His heavenly angels against Satan and the angels who followed him.
The dragon being cast down to the earth shows Satan’s defeat in heaven, though he continues to work on earth.

5. PERSECUTION OF THE WOMAN (Revelation 12:13–17)
After being cast down to the earth, Satan attacks God’s faithful people. These persecutions are Satan’s attacks against the church throughout history, including:
👉 The persecutions of the 1st to the 3rd centuries carried out by pagan Rome.
👉 The papal persecutions against God’s people during the Middle Ages, foretold in Daniel 7:25 and 8:25.

THE EARTH HELPING THE WOMAN.

The earth represents land; in other words, the land helped the woman. In the statue of Daniel 2, the final kingdom is represented by feet made of iron mixed with clay. Just as iron and clay do not adhere well together, this kingdom would contain internal opposition.

Although the papacy acted like iron (an oppressive rule) during the Middle Ages, other nations acted like clay, opposing the papacy. Nations such as Germany and England protected the Reformers (God’s faithful people) who opposed the false teachings of the papacy.

THE GREAT CONTROVERSY AT THE END TIME.

“And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
Revelation 12:17

After Satan failed to destroy the church of truth defenders during the Middle Ages, Satan—through his agent (the papacy)—planned to pour out all his power and fury against the remnant people of God, those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus.

This will be the final phase of the conflict between truth and error, between Christ and Satan. While Satan deceives the world into believing that there is no need to obey the Ten Commandments of God, God gives a solemn warning against receiving the mark of the beast, which results from breaking God’s Ten Commandments.

We will examine the topic of the MARK OF THE BEAST to understand the truth that we must know.
