The Buddhist Temple of Dar es salaam, Tanzania, East Africa. This institution was established by Sri Lankan expatriates who were living in former Tanganyika at around the year 1916.

This page is dedicated to the Buddhist Temple of DSM,TZ. It is regarded as the oldest Buddhist Temple in Africa.The temple belongs to the Theravadian tradition.Although established by Sri Lankan expatriates later Chinese,Thai,Vietnamese,Japanese,Korean,Indian,Tanzanian devotees plus a host of other nationals also joined the list.Being such an old institution it's still maintained and survived by t

he current Sri Lankans living in TZ. It's worth to mention that all Sri Lankans be it Buddhist or Non-Buddhist played a major role in the caring and maintenance of the temple up to date.The temple also received patronage from the Hon.late Mwalimu J.K.Nyere (The first president of the United Republic of Tanzania) as he played a pivotal role in advocating peace and religious freedom in Tanzania.His son,Andrew Nyerere helped in translating many Buddhist texts into Kiswahili.
