ABOUT KIUT CHAPEL
Chapel History and Current Status
The KIUT Chapel was originally started in 2011, in response to a directive from Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) that there must be a religious institution within the University, as a requirement for being awarded a charter.
It was initially an interdenominational gathering that brought together all the Christian religions present at the time, i.e. Protestants, Catholics, Seventh Day Adventists, and Pentecostals. It had its Pastor, Mrs. Owolabi who was the wife to the then Principal of the Constituent College, other leaders included; Ms. Karen, Mr. Ali, Ms. Lulu, and Mr. Sizya, who were all staff members then, most of whom have since left the Institution. The intention of the Chapel was to be in service to both the students and staff as well as to the surrounding community.
Due to the different nature of the religious groups, the amalgamation could not stand for long, causing the different groups after a short while to separate and go their own ways, leaving KIUT Chapel as a place of worship mostly for the Pentecostals and others who wanted to be part of it. Mrs. Owolabi remained on as the Pastor and following the loss of her husband, she passed on the torch to Mr. Ogah, who was the Director of Quality Assurance at the time. Mr. Ogah was assisted by Mr. Joshua who was working in the Library, and Ms. Judith Atukwatse, who was then the HoD of Social Sciences. At that point, the students were not so involved in the running/management of the Chapel affairs as there had been a few disagreements between them and the Chapel management that were not resolved. The membership of the Chapel mainly comprised of staff members.
