"Muhasaba or Self-Reflection after the Holy Month helps one to plan and achieve goals which one sets during the Night of Qadr. The goal is to ensure that deeds are solely done for Allah swt, not for praise, recognition or admiration.

¨O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and let every soul consider what it sends ahead for Tomorrow, and be wary of Allah. Allah is indeed well aware of what you do¨

The benefits of self-accounting are to allow a person to become familiar with his or her positives and negatives. It helps in self-growth – Maarifat un Nafs is in some ways similar to Biofeedback therapies, many physicians in some Western countries recommend to patients whose active participation in the healing process is needed or to patients for whom modern medicine has not found a cure.

In the Holy Quran 17:70, Allah swt honours mankind.

¨Certainly, we have honoured the Children of Adam, and carried them over land and sea, and provided them with all the good things, and preferred them with a complete preference over many of those We have created.¨

"Leadership, in its most meaningful sense, is not defined by authority or influence, but by the moral direction that guides decisions and actions. In Islamic thought, especially within the Shia tradition, justice (adl) serves as the central pillar of leadership. It is not merely a theoretical concept, but a lived reality demonstrated by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Ali (AS). Their lives reflect a model of leadership where justice is inseparable from personal integrity, and where asceticism strengthens the bond between leaders and the people they serve.

Justice in Islam is deeply connected to accountability. A leader is not elevated above others, but entrusted with responsibility and answerable both to God and to society. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) embodied this principle through his humility and simplicity. Despite his position as the leader of a rapidly growing community, he chose a modest lifestyle. His home was simple, his possessions were minimal, and his daily life reflected restraint rather than indulgence. This was not due to lack of resources, but a conscious decision to remain detached from excess, ensuring that his leadership remained just and uncorrupted."

Please recite a Surah Fateha for Marhum Mohamed Jaffer Mohamedhussein Nanji (1938-2024)

A poetic farewell by Mohamed Merali

Indeed the departed has gone to a better place,
Having left a memorable vacuum in his stead,
No one he would ever miss
Local or visitor, MohamedJaffer uncle, you’d never miss.

A knowledgeable man well informed,
Keen to discuss with an open mind,
Cigarette in hand and a ready smile,
In the Baraza, you’d always find.

Cricket was his life and soul,
Avid to watch, guide and often scold,
Players valued his keen opinion,
Long after the game, it’s postmortem on his tongue you’d find.

An enthusiastic traveller keen to see something new,
As a businessman, going with the flow,
Not one to step forward without much thought,
His every step was well calculated and carefully planned.

Marhum Mohamed Jaffer uncle, was full of life,
Active in every sphere of communal work
At times in the forefront, often from the wings,
He would always in every activity be found to take part.

"The relationship between divine guidance and human participation in decision-making presents a fascinating theological question, particularly within Shiite Islam. The paper “Explaining the Role of Consultation and Negotiation on the Life of Imam ´Ali despite Having Divine Knowledge and Infallibility,” authored by Abasali Aronaghi and colleagues, directly addresses this apparent paradox. Published in the Journal of History, Culture and Art Research in 2016, the study seeks to resolve a central ambiguity: why would Imam ´Ali (AS), believed by Shiites to possess divine knowledge and infallibility (Islamic Leadership), actively engage in consultation (shura) and negotiation with others? Through a careful examination of historical examples and theological reasoning, the authors argue that far from being unnecessary, consultation served critical pedagogical, social, and political functions that reinforced, rather than contradicted, his spiritual authority.

The paper first establishes consultation as a fundamental and revered principle within Islam, not merely a practical tool but a religious obligation. The authors cite the Qur´anic Surah Ash-Shura, where God commands the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) – himself infallible and directly connected to revelation – to “consult them in affairs” (Qur´an 3:159). "

"During the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is so easy to lose sight of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. That is where self-reflection comes in.

Self-reflection means taking the time to think and evaluate your character, values, biases, emotions, desires and actions.

It can help to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This practice encourages you to press the “pause” button amidst the chaos(thoughts) in your mind on your daily life, so you can better understand yourself.

A study of UK commuters found that those who were prompted to use their commute to think about and plan for their day were happier, more productive and less burned out than people who did not.

When reflecting ask yourself:
1. What are your core values ?
2. Can you remain true to your values?
3. What are your beliefs and principles?
3. What kind of person are you?
4 .Do you care/value your relationships?
5. What have I been doing right and what isn’t working?

Peter Drucker said:

“From the quiet reflection, will come even more effective and corrective action”."

Please recite a Surah fateha for Marhum Abulkassim Husein Kalyan (1959-2026)

Marhum Abul Qasim Kalyan spent many years shaping and inspiring young students at Husseini Madressa in Mombasa. He served as a dedicated teacher and later as principal, guiding and mentoring countless students while nurturing a deep love for the Ahlulbayt (a) and encouraging them to uphold their teachings and example. He helped instil a strong awareness of Allah (swt) in a time full of distractions. He was actively involved in the Students Welfare Section, the Volunteers Corps, and the annual Itikaf programs. Remembered for his warm smile, gentle manner, and humility, he was always approachable and ready to help those in need.

May Allah (swt) elevate his status, grant him Jannat al-Firdaws, and give patience to his family and loved ones.

This theme invites leaders to measure decisions not only by outcomes, but by justice – rooted in principle and expressed through daily practice.

In this series, Imam ´Ali’s leadership is presented as more than political or military authority. It is a moral and spiritual framework where justice becomes the constant reference point – tested in:

Social equity
Governance
Conflict and war
Personal conduct

True leadership is not only about direction – it is about guidance under pressure. “Justice as the Compass” challenges communities to ask: Are our actions aligned with principle? And do our practices protect fairness, dignity, and accountability?

"Even though he possessed lofty spiritual stations, had found a special place in the hearts of the Muslim faithful and was granted a particular form of respect from members of his family, the Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) never liked for others to perform his personal chores. Rather, he sought to be completely independent in taking care of his personal affairs. By so doing, he succeeded in showing respect towards others and not thinking of himself as better than others as well as teaching others to be self-reliant.

Daylami, in his book entitled Irshad al-Qulub, narrated the following: “The Prophet would patch his clothes, mend his shoes, milk his sheep, eat with slaves, sit on the floor and was not too shy to procure whatever he needed from the market and take it to his family.”1"

"It’s hard to remain patient and express gratitude to the Lord when one’s life is falling apart. But this is exactly what we see today. A child is blown to pieces, yet his father, at the peak of his anguish, cries out: “Hasbunalluhu wa ni´mal wakeel”. Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.

Ease and hardship are both tests from the Lord, each offering opportunities for spiritual growth and self-refinement. Two vital virtues – patience and gratitude – serve as guiding principles to help one attain the highest level a human can attain.

It’s pretty straightforward: patience in hardship and gratitude in happiness. Patience, especially, is emphasised during difficult times. Instead of viewing hardship as negative, this test is a means through which one’s spiritual growth blossoms. Patience does not only refer to suffering; rather, it reflects perseverance, trust in God’s wisdom, and remaining steadfast despite the suffering."

"Most of us live a bit of a double life; we have the version that shows up for morning prayers or sits quietly in a mosque, and then we have the version that logs into a spreadsheet, manages a storefront, or leads a board meeting. We tend to view our spiritual lives as something that happens in the quiet moments of worship, while the real world of market competition, deadlines, and profit is just a necessity to pay the bills.

What if that divide is exactly why work often feels like a grind? What if the way we handle a supply chain, manage a team, or respond to a difficult email was actually an expression of our faith?

The idea of modelling the Prophet is not about looking backward at history. It is a timeless blueprint for how to be a professional today. Whether we are employees or business owners, this is a shift in perspective moving away from seeing work as just a livelihood to seeing it as purposeful time and resources we have been entrusted with."
