October Mission Drive - On Mission

The COGOP is currently in 39 countries within Africa. Please pray for all of these nations, as well as the General Presbyter, Bishop James Kolawole and the National Bishops appointed in these nations.

Hostility towards Christians is increasing globally and has touched many of our pastors and churches. Powerful anti-Christian governments and peoples continue to level barrages of persecution and attacks to the faithful who serve Christ bringing not only destruction to church property, but bodily harm with serious injury. Stress of political, military, and civil conflict in the nations continue to threaten lives. Social crises brought on by violence and gang activity persist. Constant cries of humanitarian crises and economic decline continue.

The annual October Mission Drive begins today! Historically in our church, the months of March and October serve as two annual concentrated opportunities to spotlight, celebrate, and intentionally support the work of the Gospel among our missions’ network.

Follow Global Missions Ministries as they highlight different nations around the world throughout this month and share their prayer needs.

We believe the Church of God of Prophecy was raised by God to be a dynamic expression of New Testament Christianity. A verbal covenant visibly and publicly joins believers to the Church–both to the local and international body. This covenant does not bring about salvation but serves a much-needed role in personal development and spiritual maturity by placing the believer in community with others.

Membership in the Church is open to anyone who is a Born-Again Christian. Eligible candidates for membership are traditionally welcomed into the Church in a special ceremony where they are asked: “Will you sincerely promise in the presence of God and these witnesses that you will accept the Bible as the Word of God – believe and practice its teachings rightly divided – the New Testament as your rule of faith and practice, government and discipline, and walk in the light to the best of your knowledge and ability?” Those wishing to join reply, “I will.”

An excellent, free resource called "Membership Matters" is available for churches that wish to offer a course in the local church for prospective members. Many churches have utilized this resource in September to emphasize the importance of church membership. To access this resource, visit https://lddcogop.org/membership-matters.

"Church membership is part of the framework of discipleship. It integrates believers into a local church where they receive information, where they experience transformation, and where they find community with other Christ followers who are on the same journey."

"If you are a believer in Christ and attend a local congregation of the Church of God of Prophecy but are not a member, why not? I want to encourage you . . . to express to your pastor your desire to become a covenant member. Pastors, let me encourage you to aggressively pursue new covenant members. Give your people an opportunity to join. We especially should be engaging a new generation in church membership."

- Presiding Bishop Tim Coalter, 102nd International Assembly, Biennial Address

09/08/2024

In his visionary, biennial address to the 102nd International Assembly of the Church of God of Prophecy, Presiding Bishop Tim Coalter announced the creation of a third entity to International Offices operations, the division of Global Communications.

Drawing inspiration from Acts 2, Bishop Coalter emphasized the importance of church ministries—at all levels—effectively communicating across cultural and linguistic barriers. In this passage of Scripture, diverse peoples heard the gospel message in their own languages. Bishop Coalter emphasized that the Church embrace contemporary communication methods to effectively reach individuals and communities for Christ.

The addition of this new department, the first major restructuring of the International Offices since 1996, brings the offices' editorial, art, information technology, translation, web, and media services together under one leadership umbrella. This effort aims to “provide the environment for greater collaboration, cohesion, strategic planning, and accountability,” said Bishop Coalter.

Recognizing the impact of digital platforms on today’s society, Bishop Coalter highlighted using tools like social media, podcasts, and online streaming as essential in reaching today's interconnected world. He highlighted the past methods that served to advance the mission of the Church and aid in its global expansion. Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about the role of the newly established department in equipping leadership at all levels with resources and training to navigate modern communication opportunities.

“The decades ahead promise to be some of the most exciting in the history of the world,” concluded Bishop Coalter. “Our vision for this unique day should be filled with anticipation for the future. The work of the International Offices' Global Communications department will help us become fluent in the languages of today and tomorrow so that every man, woman, boy, and girl will hear in their own language the wonderful works of God.”

Bishop Coalter highlighted a few communications-related advancements and needs for the international church’s work. He celebrated the recent transition of the church’s official publication, The White Wing Messenger, from print to digital format. This move has enabled free access to the magazine for anyone with Internet connectivity. He noted the shift to a digital format as a pivotal moment in the magazine's history, ensuring its relevance and reach for future generations.

In addition to the advancements of the official magazine, Bishop Coalter advocated for increased financial support for the church’s translation efforts, echoing the transformative impact of Pentecost when diverse languages facilitated the gospel's spread. These funds would be utilized to make the Church’s resources accessible to additional people groups worldwide where the Church is just beginning or has yet to receive materials in their language.

Concluding his section on Communications, Bishop Coalter shared a call for “bilingual ministers.” He encouraged those in the audience, especially the youth who were present, to embrace language learning, believing it can enhance ministry effectiveness, both locally and globally. Citing statistics from various countries, this call underscored the value of language proficiency in preaching, teaching, and communicating directly with diverse audiences.

As these ministry initiatives continue to form and take shape, additional details will be shared on the church’s website and social media pages.
