The Tanzania Fellowship of Evangelical Students (TAFES) is part of a global student movement aimed to spread the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ through universities and colleges in Tanzania, irrespective of national and/or interdenominational affiliations.
The origins of TAFES began from 1947 when the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) was formed to reach the masses through students in colleges and university. After years of operations and successful reach, giving birth to Christian revival in Europe, America, China, India and Africa, in the 1950s, the Pan-Africa Fellowship of Evangelical Students (PAFES) was formed to focus the faith movement in Africa where in 1973, the Fellowship of Christian Unions (FOCUS) was formed to coordinate operations in East Africa. During these years, FOCUS coordinated Christian fellowships and pertaining activities at the University of East Africa, which are now called the University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University and Nairobi University after the East African Community dissolved.
The Unfortunate dissolution of the East African Community caused operational difficulties for FOCUS and shortly after agreed to split to form independent fellowship associations in the respective countries where in Tanzania it was named the Tanzania Fellowship of Evangelical Students (TAFES).
TAFES is currently operating in eight (8) regions in Tanzania namely; Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Dodoma, Arusha, Morogoro, Mbeya, Iringa and Kilimanjaro, spreading the world of the Lord Jesus Christ through colleges and universities with Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) being one of them.
Establishment of TAFES – KIUT
At first the United Faith Christian Student Fellowship existedand was established on the 20thof December 2010, under the umbrella of the United Faith Chapel from KIU’smain campus in Uganda. It had 16 members on the first day of the fellowship. However, a year later, December 2011, the United Faith Christian Student Fellowship affiliated with TAFES to form TAFES-KIU due to the university at time being a constituent college of KIU Uganda. At this moment,TAFES-KIU had more than 40 student members. On 2018 the campus changed its name from TAFES-KIU to TAFES-KIUT after the university became a full-fledged university to be called Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT).
Core Values
We are Evangelical: TAFES-KIUT is a bible believing Fellowship. The Bible is our standard & final authority in all matters of faith & conduct.
We are Inter-denominational and Non-denominational: TAFES-KIUT members cut across various denominations and hence provide common forum for worship. All members subscribe to TAFES-KIUT doctrinal basis of faith. As a nondenominational fellowship, TAFES-KIUT does not align to any denomination. However, TAFES- KIUT recognizes and identifies with the local churches and serve them by reaching out to students while they are on campus.
We are student-centered: We operate primarily in tertiary institutions and we are committed to students’ initiative and leadership based on biblical principles.
We are passionate about the unity of believers: As a result of our inter-denominational and non-denominational status, we provide a forum where believers from different denominations interact and relate as members of the universal Church – the body of Christ.
We advocate the practices of excellence and integrity: We aim to ensure that student members perform academically and are of Godly characters with Jesus Christ as their role model. Through this virtue, these students become associates who will honor God through their lifestyles after graduating
Core Commitment
Leadership Development: TAFES-KIUT gives optimum attention to leadership development to student members to make them leaders tomorrow.
Discipleship: To deepen and strengthen spiritual life of students and equip them for a lifetime of service in the family, Church and society with Jesus Christ as their Role Model. Biblical discipleship is to know and follow Christ consistently at all cost, with the goal of being like Him.
Evangelism: Students reaching students with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is a big priority for TAFES-KIUT. Giving each student on campus the opportunity of responding to the gospel and ultimately winning the campus for Jesus Christ is our target.
Missions: We seek to help students respond to the call of taking the gospel beyond their campuses to other areas and nations at large to be the biblical ‘salt’ and ‘light’ that would lead many to Christ.
Prayers: We are a praying movement that is committed to personal and intercessory prayer meetings. Winning the campuses and nations through prayers is among our strategy.
Scripture engagement: As a result of our evangelical heritage, we give ample time to in-depth study of the Scripture. We endeavor to remain faithful to scripture through sound interpretation of Scripture.
Service to the Church and Communities: We serve the local churches by developing the students while in school and redirect them back to their churches upon graduation. We equally serve the community through our social work.
