座落於台東市蘭州街的日光寺，建寺因緣，為台東人長期閱讀《普門雜誌》、《覺世月刊》，進而組團回山參加活動，而認同佛光山的道風及大師的理念。

　　民國七十七年，信徒聯名邀請大師至台東文化中心講演，希望能在台東設立佛光山別分院。幾經尋覓，終於購得台東市郊近三千坪之土地。

　　建寺工程未完成前，信眾即渴望有一共修之地，故在民國八十一年由楊子調居士發心提供場地，先行成立台東禪淨中心。當時在監寺依智法師的帶領下，除了積極於建寺的工程，另舉辦有朝山、大悲懺等修持活動，另舉於鄰近地區如成功、池上、玉里等鄉鎮成立佈教所。

　　民國八十四年十月，將位於東糖街的台東禪淨中心，遷移至尚在工程的海東佛剎。同年十二月大師將海東佛剎正式更名為「日光寺」，希望佛光普照台東市民。
