Last weekend, May 16–17, Chan Grove’s bilingual Chinese-English Two-Day Chan Retreat concluded successfully through the wholehearted participation of practitioners and the dedicated support of volunteers. Centered on the “Four Core Methods” of Patriarch Chan, the retreat guided participants to return to the present moment and experience inner stability and clarity within daily life and practice.
The retreat was structured over two days. The first day focused on reciting “Mahā Prajñā Pāramitā” and “Wisdom Contemplation,” while the second day explored “Investigating Chan” and “Aligning with the Pure Mind.” From gathering and settling the mind, to direct contemplation, to raising the sense of inquiry and realizing the inherently pure mind, the practice unfolded naturally and progressively.
On the first day, participants calmed scattered thoughts through the steady recitation of “Mahā Prajñā Pāramitā.” This was followed by the practice of “Prajñā Wisdom Contemplation,” where participants walked outdoors in silence, learning not to interfere, judge, or analyze, but simply to observe the arising and passing of breath, thoughts, and emotions with awareness.
On the second day, the retreat moved into the practice of “Investigating Chan.” Participants gently raised the inquiry, “What is this?” or “Who is it?”, turning the light inward to illuminate the mind and cut through habitual patterns of thinking.
Jason then guided the practice of “Aligning with the Pure Mind,” emphasizing that the pure mind is not something attained through cultivation, but is originally complete. Through the practice of “letting experiences pass without attachment and abiding nowhere,” participants learned to allow thoughts and sensations to arise and dissolve naturally, without grasping or resistance.
Beyond formal meditation sessions, daily activities throughout the retreat were also part of the practice. From sitting meditation and mindful meals to working meditation, participants cultivated awareness and attentiveness in every small action, experiencing that Chan is inseparable from daily life itself.
In the closing session, Jason reminded everyone that Patriarch Chan does not end in the Chan hall, but continues within everyday life. May each participant bring this sense of stability and clarity back into daily living, and continue practicing the freedom to be fully present and self-aware in every moment.
