Jesus taught his disciples what we call the Lord's Prayer. What's surprising is that they would even ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. Didn't they know how to pray? They were immersed in a culture that prayed all the time. Yet they must have seen something different in Jesus' prayer life that they weren't experiencing, but wanted to experience for themselves. Today, we look at the context of the prayer Jesus taught as well as what it teaches us about the posture of our minds and hearts when we pray.

Typically, we think of one main passage as containing the Great Commission. But in actuality, there are several times when followers of Jesus are commanded to make disciples (not just converts). The point is that the work is not for missionaries, but that all followers are called to live missionally wherever God has placed us.

It was common practice for rabbis to quote the opening line of a well-known passage and expect his followers to access the rest of the passage from memory. This is much the same way that I could probably quote the first line from a famous song and get us all singing the rest of the song. One of the disciplines that has fallen by the wayside is memorizing Scripture. With easy access to phones and the internet, it seems like something we can do without. But God often speaks to us through His word, and unless His word is deeply ingrained in our inner being through the discipline of meditation and memorization, we won't necessarily have a reflexive access to its truth and power when we most need it.

The Bible is simple enough for children to read and understand, but it's also complex enough to require us to do one thing to really dig into God's love letter: STUDY. We have to do some work to untangle the cultural nuances and historical background, but it's critical in understanding the original intention before we can apply it to our current context. And in the end, it takes work to understand the love language of another person, and by studying Scripture, we are doing so out of a love for God and to understand His love for us a little deeper.

The way we've been trained to read and the way that Scripture was designed to be read is sometimes at odds. With our current need for a consistent dopamine rush and our desire for a quick download of information, we sometimes miss out on the depths of how God meant for us to interact with His word. Instead, we are to meditate on it day and night. We are to mutter it under our breath. We are to chew and gnaw on it to get to the marrow and explore and allow His truth to transform us.

Sometimes reading Scripture can be slow, confusing, and boring. But one of the qualities of our God is that he acts slowly. Developing our theology is more about a right relationship than about factual accuracy. That kind of thing takes time and devotion, hence the idea of slow theology.

All of Scripture points towards Jesus. We have more Bibles in circulation today than in any other time in history. But how much is reading, meditating, studying, and memorizing a part of our spiritual disciplines? There is a clear relationship between the place Scripture has in our lives and our spiritual formation of becoming more and more like our rabbi. Let's pray that God kindles a desire for more of his word and and understanding of how it's more precious than gold.

We all have an ideal version of community and relationships that we hold to. But what do we do because the reality is messy and not ideal? That's why radical individualists will often leave. If the church doesn't fulfill my needs or look the way I want it to look, I'm out of here! But the fact that Paul wrote letters to highly dysfunctional churches, instructing them to change their ways, offers a very different alternative. Stay. Don't leave. Stick it out. Figure it out. Resolve conflict. It's only in staying in long-term and deep community that we will truly grow. There's no secret or shortcut to it. Simply...stay.
