🎼 When Music Becomes a Language of Culture | TSO “Kaddish” Press Conference at JTCA

We were honored to host the press conference for the Taipei Symphony Orchestra (TSO)’s “Kaddish” performance at JTCA. In this occasion, we are deeply honored to serve as a “cultural collaborator and venue supporter.” Out of respect for classical and timeless art, we have devoted our venue resources to fully support and facilitate this dialogue of art, one that carries historical significance, while the JTCA Kosher Culinary Lab offered refreshments for the guests.

However, the significance of this event goes far beyond venue support.

Over the past period, TSO musicians visited the JTCA Museum on two separate occasions, gaining a deeper understanding of Jewish history and culture. Through these visits, music was not only performed—but more importantly, interpreted with a closer connection to its cultural and historical context.

In addition, we arranged Hebrew language instructors to coach the singers of the Philharmonic Choir in pronunciation, ensuring that Hebrew was not merely a language to be sung, but one to be truly understood and authentically expressed.

These seemingly detailed preparations reflect the very essence of cultural exchange—true understanding is what makes genuine expression possible.

Because “Kaddish” itself carries profound layers of faith, history, and human emotion, this journey of preparation has made JTCA’s role even more meaningful and significant.

This would not have been possible without the long-standing vision and support of our Founder, Mr. Jeffrey D. Schwartz, who has continuously promoted cultural exchange. Thanks to his dedication, Jewish culture in Taiwan is not only recognized, but also truly seen, understood, and expressed through diverse forms.

As JTCA Public Relations Alex shared during the press conference:

“Truly great art is not only meant to be heard, but to allow people from different cultures to see themselves within it.”

Through this musical dialogue across cultures, we deeply feel the power that art can reach—and we are honored to serve as a bridge within it.
-
🎫 “Kaddish” will be performed at the National Concert Hall on May 12.
We sincerely invite everyone to seize this opportunity and experience this musical journey that transcends culture and faith.

On May 4, a delegation from the Israeli Knesset visited the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center (JCC) for cultural exchange and community engagement. The delegation was welcomed by Alex from the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association (JTCA) and Rabbi Shlomi from Chabad Taiwan.

The distinguished guests included:
• Mickey Levy, Former Speaker of the Knesset & Senior Member of the Knesset
• Boaz Toporovsky, Chairman of the Taiwan-Israel Parliamentary Group and Member of the Knesset
• Yonatan Mishraki, Member of the Knesset
• Ron Katz, Member of the Knesset
• Amitai Young, Parliamentary Advisor and Chief of Staff for MK Mickey Levy
• Ambassador Abby Lee from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Israel

JCC would especially like to thank Chairman Boaz Toporovsky for his long-standing support of Taiwan-Israel relations and exchanges, and also express appreciation to the delegation for making the journey to Taiwan during this significant time.

During the visit, the delegation learned more about how the Jewish community in Taiwan lives and operates through its community center. They also toured Taiwan’s only Mikvah built fully in accordance with Jewish law. Through the detailed introduction, the guests gained a deeper understanding of how challenging it is to establish such a space in Taiwan, making its existence all the more meaningful and precious.

Throughout the tour, the members of the delegation were deeply impressed by the JCC space created in Taiwan by founder Jeffrey D. Schwartz. From Jewish cultural collections and artistic spaces to the integration of community life and faith, every part of the center reflected a thoughtful vision and dedication.

Especially upon entering the synagogue and seeing the Torah, several members of the delegation naturally stepped forward in respect. In that moment, it felt like more than cultural exchange — it was a reflection of how Jewish culture has been genuinely preserved and continued here in Taiwan.

Following the tour, the delegation was invited to a luncheon at the Kosher Culinary Lab, where they dined in the JCC VIP room surrounded by Mr. Schwartz’s private collections, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of dining within a museum.

As Taiwan’s only kosher restaurant, the center also prepared a selection of Middle Eastern and Jewish dishes, including hummus and tagine dishes, leaving the guests pleasantly surprised that Taiwan could present such an authentic and high-quality kosher culinary experience.

The Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center will continue serving as an important bridge between Taiwan and the international Jewish community, allowing more cultural exchange and friendship to be seen and carried forward through this space.🥰

Between Memory and the Present — Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026

On April 29, the “2026 International Holocaust Remembrance Day” ceremony was held at the Taipei Guest House, where participants gathered in a solemn atmosphere to reflect on history and memory.

The program began with a testimony video by Holocaust survivor Tswi Josef Herschel, titled “Who’s Child Are You?”. Through his personal life story, the film brings history into human focus—speaking of identity, of loss, and of the dignity that can still endure even in the most extreme circumstances.

This was followed by a prayer, El Maleh Rachamim, recited by Rabbi Shlomi Tabib. The quiet recitation filled the space, transforming remembrance into a shared experience that transcends language and culture.

During the candle-lighting ceremony, each flame was lit in memory of the six million Jewish victims, serving as a reminder that such memory must never fade.

Distinguished guests offered remarks, including Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), Director of the German Institute Taipei Karsten Tietz, Representative of the Israeli Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei Maya Yaron, and Vice President of Taiwan Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴).

In her remarks, the Vice President noted that the Holocaust remains not only a historical tragedy, but an enduring warning to humanity. She emphasized that only by safeguarding democracy and human rights can the shadow of tyranny be prevented from returning. She also reflected on Taiwan’s own historical experience, underscoring the importance of remembrance and reflection, and the ongoing responsibility to respond through action.

Other distinguished attendees included Secretary-General of the National Security Council Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu-chih-chung (吳志中), Israeli Knesset Member Boaz Toporovsky, Head of the Polish Office in Taipei Janusz Henryk Bilski, and Director of the French Office in Taipei Franck Paris.

The Founder of the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association, Jeffrey D. Schwartz, also attended the commemorative gathering.

In remembrance, we do not only look back at history—we choose, in the present, to remember, to understand, and to uphold human dignity.

We were recently honored to receive a generous donation from the artist Olha Shypelyk, who gifted her artwork “LIFE” to our JCC as a gesture of support for the Jewish people and appreciation for the cultural and educational work we carry out in Taiwan.

“LIFE” expresses the rhythm and flow of existence through layered movement and vibrant tones. The presence of gold elements symbolizes divine light and blessing, reflecting a sense of continuity, balance, and the connection between inner life and faith.

Olha Shypelyk’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in spirituality and belief. Growing up surrounded by teachings about G-d, faith, and prayer, these values became the foundation of her work. Her paintings combine contemporary techniques with traditional elements and symbolism, often created with acrylic or oil and enhanced with 24K gold leaf. She believes that art is not merely decorative, but a carrier of meaning, spirituality, and warmth.

She is also actively engaged in charitable efforts, having donated over 100 paintings to charity auctions across Ukraine and various European cities, using art as a way to support communities and share goodwill.

We are truly grateful for this meaningful gesture that bridges cultures and distances. The artwork “LIFE” will be exhibited at our JCC Museum, and we warmly invite you to visit and experience this reflection on life and light.

Lag BaOmer: A Moment of Light Within the Quiet

During the Omer counting period between Passover and Shavuot, the atmosphere is often more reflective and subdued. Yet on the 33rd day, a different tone emerges—Lag BaOmer.

This day is seen as a gentle pause within the season.

It is traditionally associated with the end of a plague among the students of Rabbi Akiva, and also connected to the legacy of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. In many Jewish communities around the world, bonfires are lit to symbolize light, wisdom, and continuity.

Compared to other holidays, Lag BaOmer is less about formal rituals and more about simple moments—
being outdoors, children playing, and people gathering together.

Within a quieter period, it offers a reminder:
even in times of reflection, there is always room for light and human connection.

At the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center in Taipei, we continue to share the cultural stories behind these traditions.
Whether you are discovering Jewish culture for the first time or looking to deepen your understanding, you are always welcome to visit and experience it with us.

“Leonard Bernstein: Symphony No.3 ‘Kaddish’ — First Full Performance in Taiwan”
A sound that has waited for more than sixty years.

In 2026, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No.3 “Kaddish” will be presented in Taiwan in its first complete performance, bringing this monumental work—one that moves across faith, memory, and human questioning—fully into our present time.
This is not merely a concert. It is a dialogue across time.

Composed by Bernstein, a composer deeply shaped by Jewish spiritual thought and the musical language of American modernism, the work will be conducted by Eliahu Inbal, a distinguished maestro who carries forward the interpretive lineage of Jewish musical tradition. Together, they awakened this symphony once again on today’s stage.

“Kaddish” is originally a Jewish prayer traditionally recited in mourning, yet at its core it is a proclamation of life. In this 1963 work, Bernstein weaves together narration, chorus, and symphonic writing, allowing humanity itself to question existence—through doubt, confrontation, and even rage.
It does not offer answers. It allows questions to be heard.

When Inbal raises the baton, sounds once belonging to the past begin to breathe again. History is no longer only remembered—it is experienced anew through music.

This is an encounter across time, and a sonic journey that can only be fully experienced in the concert hall.

2026/05/12 We sincerely invite you to join us in witnessing the first complete performance of Kaddish in Taiwan.

Passover has come to an end, and our everyday menu is back 🤤
The Kosher Culinary Lab is once again in full operation,
continuing to uphold the most rigorous kosher standards,
doing what we always do:
transforming halachic rules into a dining experience rich in Jewish culinary character.

Two of the most frequently ordered dishes here:
🍅 Shakshuka
A classic in everyday Middle Eastern and Israeli cuisine,
commonly enjoyed as breakfast or a light meal.
Tomatoes, sweet peppers, and spices are slowly simmered,
then eggs are gently poached into the sauce.
Rich in lycopene and various phytonutrients,
it is widely recognized in Mediterranean diets as a nutritionally complete dish.

🥙 Hummus
Made from chickpeas blended with tahini into a smooth, creamy texture,
finished with paprika and olive oil.
Chickpeas are known as a high-quality plant-based protein source,
while olive oil is a key component of the Mediterranean diet,
bringing both nutritional balance and depth of flavor to the dish.
If you would like to better understand the spirit of kosher dining,
or experience a form of cuisine shaped by culture and dietary integrity—
you are warmly welcome to the Kosher Culinary Lab.

When we talk about a “Deep Clean,” in Eastern cultures it usually means tidying up, organizing, and scrubbing.
But in Jewish culture, preparing for Passover’s Deep Clean sometimes involves fire🔥!

Every year before Passover, every corner of the kitchen must be thoroughly cleared of Chametz—
it’s not enough to simply wipe away crumbs or flour.
Any utensil that has come into contact with leavened food must be “reset.”
That’s why the Rabbi uses a flame torch to heat the cookware,
and then carefully pours hot water over it—
a seemingly simple action, but one that follows a tradition spanning thousands of years,
returning the utensils from “once containing leaven” to fully purified, ready for the holiday table.
🔥 Clean is what the eye can see; purified is what culture defines.
Passover Seder registration is closing soon!

This year at JCC, it’s more than just a meal—
you’ll join one of the most important celebrations in the Jewish community,
experience prayers, traditional rituals, and the festive atmosphere,
and take part in a cultural tradition that has been preserved for centuries.
Don’t miss this chance to celebrate this special holiday with us!
