Story: Intentional Discipleship from Team Hope, Arise Asia

Sigaya, a local community member and a participant in our backyard FAITH garden program, recently experienced a profound miracle. After battling a severe two-month illness, she was hospitalized and declared dead when she had stopped breathing for some time. However, she unexpectedly began breathing again to the shock and joy of her child who was next to her.

Due to a lack of adequate care, her family eventually brought her home. As she regained her strength, she tearfully shared her vision that when she was in a coma, she was walking along streets in a very bright place, searching for her home but unable to find it to her distress. She wept and wept as she shared.

During our most recent visit, the atmosphere in her home felt different, we sensed the presence of God. Our team greeted her with warmth and love, and “RD” began to explain the significance of the Light Sigaya had seen. “RD” shared that this Light she saw could represent God and His heavenly kingdom—a place of God’s holiness where sickness and sin will not exist.

In a culturally sensitive way, “RD” pointed to Jesus as that Light and the only Way to heaven. After hearing the message of Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection, and His offer of eternal life to all who believe, Sigaya felt moved and accepted the invitation to place her faith in Him. She prayed alongside the team, dedicating her life to “Isa” (Jesus in Arabic) and asking Isa for her family to also come to know Him. We are praying for her heart to remain steadfast and that she will not be impacted by the family’s desire to bring her to an animistic traditional healer.

May God bring many, many more like Sigaya to the light of the Gospel!

God is never limited to the physical world. Time and time again, Jesus has appeared in visions and dreams, particularly among the Muslims. May we never get tired of praying for people groups that are difficult to reach for nothing is too difficult and nothing is impossible for our almighty and powerful God!

Jeremy Mueller(SEND 宣教士):哪一個 Ondra?

Jeremy:

Story: Intentional Discipleship from Czech Republic, Europe

Student: Do you remember Ondra?

Jeremy Mueller (SEND worker): Which Ondra?

Student: You know...he came to that one event two and a half years ago.

Jeremy: Then I definitely don't remember him, but why?

Student: Oh, he is a believer now.

This is a real exchange that I had with a student two months ago. It paints a great picture of what ministry is like in the Czech Republic. We organized an event, it went well, but nothing big happened. However, over the next two and a half years this student’s friends kept working with him, talking to him, answering questions, and eventually he came to believe the gospel.

For sure, there are times when an event happens, the gospel is proclaimed, and people immediately believe. But these cases aren’t the norm. Usually, it takes time. Oftentimes, the event we worked so hard to organize and make just right is only a tiny piece of what helped this student see he wanted to follow Jesus. I think this is an encouraging reminder as we head into a new year. Please pray that we will be part of more of these small moments in the lives of Czechs that lead to them knowing Jesus.

Any time we receive news of someone surrendering his or her life to Christ—particularly one we haven’t seen or heard of in a while—we are reminded of the Holy Spirit’s continuous work in the hearts of people. As you prepare for camps and summer events, may you be encouraged by God’s sovereignty and steadfast love as He continues to draw people to Himself.

Intentional Discipleship, from Eurasia

"I thought when I came to church, I would see grandmas holding candles. Instead, I saw anime girls.” That was our favorite quote from a first-time visitor today. At the beginning of October, we joined together with a small team of local believers here in Central Asia to start a new church plant. What started as a simple discussion group for college and career students soon grew into a weekly Bible study. Over the past few weeks, we have begun inviting these students to our Sunday services.

We have been amazed and encouraged by the people God is bringing through the doors. Many are young men and women in their twenties who are searching for meaning, genuine relationships, and truth. They come just as they are, sometimes wearing questionable attire (including T-shirts with profanity) or stepping out to take a smoke break. Many have never stepped into a church before, yet they quickly see that this is a place where they are loved and can learn about the One who created them.

Today, thirty new people came who are not yet believers, in addition to our core group of Christians. Several of the guys from our Thursday night Bible study decided to come and brought their entire families with them! A few people that we met recently at an English Club also came, and one young man even asked when our next meeting will be because he wants to come again. Another family stayed long after the service ended because their 13-year-old daughter was having such a good time that she begged them not to leave.

There is no explanation for this except that God is at work. We are reminded again that we are fully dependent on Him, and that prayer is essential. May the Lord continue drawing all of us closer to Himself!

Our SEND value of Courageous Innovation is being lived out in a remote community in Alaska. "We reinstated the church prayer meeting but were struggling to find ways to motivate people to attend. Well, a while ago I started selling wood-fired pizza in a renovated trailer home. This happens once a week on Thursdays, so instead of meeting for prayer at 7am we moved it to 8:30pm – after the pizza shop closes with potential left-over pizza. It worked! More than a handful of people show up every week for a fervent time of prayer and fellowship. Many voiced this is their new favorite time together as church.”

God can use you whatever you offer Him to bring people to His Kingdom. Whatever ideas, passions, and skills you have can be used by Him to start a conversation and open doors for the gospel. No innovation is too small for our big God!

Lasting Impact from Poland, Europe

In a digital age where documents live in the cloud, it was a surprise to uncover old SEND NCE conference handbooks from 2005 while sorting through files. Curiosity led me (Rick) to read the prayer requests of colleagues from years past. They prayed earnestly for God to move in Poland and the Czech Republic—for Regional Impact Teams, people of peace, new gathering spaces, and gospel fruit in places like Lubin, Opole, Brno, and Ostrava. At the time they were written, these were simple prayers of faith. Reading them nearly 20 years later felt like being in a time machine. What stood out was God’s faithfulness. Opole has now celebrated 20 years as a church, and Lubin stands fully independent. Their prayers bore lasting fruit. Amid ministry, victories are often hard to see. Yet God gives us these mile markers of grace—reminders that our labor has meaning and that His timing is perfect. As we look ahead to the next 20 years, we trust the same faithful God who was at work then is still at work now.

Persevering in prayer bears fruit not because of our efforts but because of who God is. The same God who fulfilled His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the same God who answers our prayers today. Be encouraged by the many saints and servants who have gone before us.

Intentional Discipleship – North Macedonia, Europe

Living as an Albanian in North Macedonia often means struggling with questions of identity and belonging. AL meets weekly with four Albanian young men through a STEM learning program. Like many people from minority groups, they long to feel accepted and at home. As they grew up, they often asked themselves, “Why don’t we belong? Why doesn’t this feel like home?”

Wanting to better understand these struggles, AL began doing ethnographic interviews with Albanians from different generations. Through this, he learned how Albanian culture and Islamic values are closely connected and shape a strong Albanian identity in North Macedonia. At the same time, this strong identity can make it difficult for Albanians to integrate with the Orthodox Macedonian majority.

As AL prepares each STEM lesson, what he learns from these interviews helps guide his conversations with the young men, especially as he listens to their hopes and fears. Intentional discipleship means continually learning about people’s inner struggles with identity, belonging, and emotional health. Please pray that these gospel-centered conversations will lead these young men closer to Christ.
In today’s diverse and complex world, it is more important than ever to intentionally understand the people we serve. Every person has a story shaped by culture, family, and religious background. May we take time to listen and learn deeply as we share the hope of Christ in every area of their lives.

Story: Courageous Innovation from Croatia, Europe

Our (Johann Go and Croatian Baptist) church is in the middle of raising funds for a new building—a space we believe will bless our youth and the generations to come. As I challenged our young people to take ownership of this effort, we began dreaming of creative ways to contribute.

One of our college girls pushed our thinking further: Why limit our fundraising to those already in the church? Why not look outward and involve our city as well? That question sparked something new. We decided to collect old clothes from our congregation and sell them on Vinted, a popular app across Europe—an innovative way to raise funds without relying on the same pool of givers.

While this may not look like “direct ministry” in the traditional sense, I believe it’s an innovative and powerful way of empowering our young people, showing them that they are an active part of the body of Christ and that their ideas, creativity, and initiative matter. In the span of 2.5 months, they have raised around 150 Euros by selling old clothes. Though in the bigger scheme of things, the amount might not be much, it means a lot for them to take that initiative. We are praying for more courageous innovation!

Story: Intentional Discipleship, Lasting Impact from Georgia, Eurasia

Stas (17) had a "Wow!" moment he shared with me two Sundays ago after our church service. "Rick, can you imagine? God brought me to Georgia so that I could know Jesus!" The pastor had announced there would be a baptism the following Sunday, and he invited those who knew Jesus as their Savior and desired to follow him as Lord to consider getting baptized. Without any hesitation, Stas approached the pastor when the service ended. He is one of seven Ukrainian orphans in my Sunday class for teenagers where I teach the Bible at Resurrection Church (Teen Challenge's church in Georgia).

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the Russian army sent soldiers into a town that had an orphanage. Stas and the other orphans were captured and taken to Russia along with their director. The director, along with the children, later escaped and dangerously traveled to Georgia where they were allowed to enter as asylum seekers. Stas' "Wow!" moment was a "Wow!" moment for me, too. I marveled how he understood that his being in Georgia was by God's divine intervention! After the orphans and their orphanage director arrived in Georgia, Teen Challenge got involved with humanitarian help, documentation assistance, and transportation to bring them to church every Sunday.

Two summers ago, Teen Challenge hosted a five-day Day Camp, and the Ukrainian kids attended as campers. Two of them, Stas and Lilya, prayed to accept Christ! This past year, I witnessed them growing in their relationship with Jesus. Lilya is quieter, but Stas was very active in our Sunday Bible classes by asking questions, answering questions that I asked, and volunteering to read Bible verses. We also talked personally, and he shared how he wanted to obey Jesus. I also knew that prayer and Bible reading were important to him, and I encouraged him to lead the other kids in prayer at night when they got ready for bed.

Last Sunday, I watched Stas and Lilya joyfully enter the outdoor portable baptismal pool, share with the church their commitment to Jesus, and then come up out of the water wearing a huge smile. But they weren't the only ones. Three more of the orphans were baptized plus two other teens from the Sunday Bible class I teach. Altogether, 14 people were baptized, and seven of them were teenagers from the Sunday Bible classes. Praise God for His incredible salvation to all who believe!
God’s work never stops. Even during war and tragedy, He is preparing hearts to receive the gift of eternal life through our Living Hope, Jesus Christ. May we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading to start a conversation or disciple a young believer. Every small act of faithfulness can shine Christ’s light even in the darkest places.

Intentional Discipleship from Indonesia, Asia

Charles is a young professional who is a Chinese Indonesian from a devout Buddhist family. The Lord has been working in his life and placed in his heart the desire to personally know Jesus. Praise God that through a mutual friend, our SEND colleague Ver G. was able to connect with Charles. He had a lot of questions regarding Jesus, especially about Jesus being God. Praise the Lord that on that very first meeting, he accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior!

Charles was born in a complicated family situation. He learned as a boy that his parents were not married and that his dad had another family in a different country. This is the reason why his parents do not talk to each other even when his dad comes home on weekends and sleeps in their very house. This has a profound effect on Charles. Even though he strives to look at the positive side of life, it is obvious that this has a spiritual and emotional effect on him. His dad still has a strong influence on his spirituality. God in His sovereignty saved Charles. This decision was very real to him, but there is still a lot of baggage that needs to be dealt with. The biggest challenge is his father’s hold on him that he needs to continue all his Buddhist rituals. This is a big struggle for him, but Charles still confesses that Jesus is in his heart and would like to follow Him.

Ver has been meeting with Charles for follow-up and discipleship. Please pray for Charles as he struggles with his decision to follow the Lord or follow his father who is telling him to stop believing in Jesus. Praise God that through intentional discipleship, Ver continues to meet with him. May the Holy Spirit work in a mighty and powerful way in his life! Please pray that his father will also see how following Jesus has changed his son’s life for the better!

We never really know where one conversation may lead. Sometimes it results in someone fully embracing Jesus. Other times it ends in awkward silence and polite nods. Either way, we are called to obey God’s command to GO—initiate that conversation, continue ministering to that community, and ultimately, make disciples. Jesus promises to be with us always.
