"YOU MUST BLOW A TERU’AH WITH THE TRUMPETS!" (Numbers 10:9)

"When you go to war in your land against an adversary who attacks you, you must blow a teru’ah with the trumpets and be remembered favorably before HaShem, your G-d, and thus be saved from your enemies." (Numbers 10:9)
We interrupt this week's Torah discussion with the following announcement: Israel has launched a sweeping attack on Iran's nuclear sites, missile sites and top military leadership, striking a devastating blow to the terrorist regime. At 3:00 AM all of Israel was awakened by an alert with instructions to be ready for anything, as the preemptive strike had already begun. Iranian drones and missiles are currently on their way to Israel and at any moment we may be hearing sirens calling upon us to enter into protected spaces.
But wait a minute! We aren't interrupting this week's parashat Beha'alotcha! We are living it! "When you go to war in your land against an adversary who attacks you, you must blow a teru’ah with the trumpets and be remembered favorably before HaShem, your G-d, and thus be saved from your enemies." This morning Jews gathered for prayer at the Western Wall, read these very words and sounded silver trumpets, (fashioned by the Temple Institute).
The teru'ah is a series of short blasts on the silver trumpet, a wordless prayer that is heard in heaven and alerts HaShem to His children's distress. Just as Israel cried out in Egypt and "G-d heard their cry, and G-d remembered His covenant with Avraham, with Yitzchak, and with Yaakov. And G-d saw the children of Israel, and G-d knew," (Exodus 2:24-25) so too does G-d hear the blasts from the silvers trumpets when Israel goes out to war to defend her land, her people, and the honor of her G-d.
Parashat Beha'alotcha is full of many highs and many lows concerning Israel in the wilderness. Her final preparations before entering into and conquering Canaan are being made, and the conquest of Canaan seems immanent. Led by the Ark of the Covenant, Israel strikes camp, and begins her march to the promised land: "When the Ark was to set out, Moshe would say: 'Arise, HaShem! May Your enemies be scattered, and may those who hate You flee from You.' When the ark came to rest, he would say, 'Repose, HaShem, among the myriads and thousands of Israel.'” (Numbers 10:35-36) The future looks bright - and then things go awry. But now is not the time to focus on the downside. Now is the time to sound the trumpets and pray for the success of our army and airforce.
The Temple Institute takes the commandment to make two silver trumpets and sound them when entering into battle very seriously. Soon after the massacre of October 7th, when the IDF was preparing to enter into Gaza, the Temple Institute was already busy pursuing the production of silver trumpets to distribute to IDF battalions and brigades. A small number of sets were produced and successfully distributed and sounded by soldiers before entering into battle. The Institute is currently trying to raise funds in order to be able to produce more trumpets. In a video which we have uploaded today Rabbi Menachem Rozental explains the unique promise of the trumpets and the challenges of producing them.
The commandment to make and sound the two silver trumpets is one of only three Torah commandments in which the reward for performing the commandment is mentioned explicitly, immediately following the commandment itself: "you must blow a teru’ah with the trumpets... and thus be saved from your enemies." The Torah is sending us a clear message that the sounding of the trumpets - the cry out to HaShem - is an essential and indispensable component of victory over our oppressors. Putting these trumpets into service is of the essence!
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! Pray for the success and safety of Israel courageous soldiers and pilots! Pray for the honor of HaShem! Israel has named her offensive against Iran “Kalavi yakum,” from the words of the heathen prophet Bilaam: “Am kalavi yakum uke'ari yitnasei - Behold, a people that rises like a lioness and raises itself like a lion. It does not lie down until it eats its prey and drinks the blood of the slain." (Numbers 23:24)
