🌟 International Volunteers Support Hualien Disaster Relief 🌟
On September 24, Typhoon “Hinnamnor” severely struck Hualien.
The dam upstream of Mata’ang Creek overflowed, and mudflows instantly submerged streets and homes, causing serious damage.
At the first opportunity, the Fo Guang Shan monastery, led by Executive Vice Abbot Venerable Hui-Chuan, together with international volunteers, organized and transported supplies to the disaster area, delivering warmth and care to those affected.
In the days following the typhoon, volunteers across Taiwan spontaneously traveled to Hualien to assist with recovery and reconstruction. Many carried shovels and worked tirelessly to clear mud, earning the affectionate nickname “Shovel Superheroes.” Their efforts opened a path home for the residents.
Among them, three international volunteers from Fo Guang Shan stepped forward to help—Landry from the United States, Em from Australia, and Mee Kee from Malaysia. On September 29, they arrived in Hualien alongside Fo Guang Shan’s local volunteers and worked side by side with local helpers.
Their tasks included preparing food, removing mud, and cleaning furniture and household items, helping residents gradually restore their daily lives. Along the way, they felt a deep sense of familiarity seeing volunteers in Fo Guang Shan uniforms and Red BLIA-YAD shirts. They also received careful support from local Dharma sisters, experiencing the spirit of mutual care and the importance of organized cooperation. What left the strongest impression on them was the scene in the streets: everyone wearing boots, holding shovels, and working together—an inspiring demonstration of the power of collective action.
We sincerely thank all volunteers, both local and international, who joined this relief effort. While one person’s strength may be limited, the power of collective effort can create infinite possibilities. Every bit of contribution, every act of help, accumulates to restore peace and stability in the disaster area.
May this kindness and dedication continue to spread in the world, and may Hualien soon recover in safety and light.
