Papa God, just as the sun shines on all of creation without prejudice, so too your love is unconditional for all your children, saints and sinners alike. Teach us to see the good in others first O God, to embrace our own imperfections before we point out others’ sins, to build bridges rather than barriers, and to transform strangers into friends. Being vulnerable to the other is never easy O God, but give us the strength today to walk the extra mile in the shoes of our brothers and sisters, that we may love them as much as we love ourselves.

“If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”

Matthew 5: 38-42

‘Eye for Eye and Tooth for Tooth’ was always an admonition for the dull and ignorant and remains so for those who still wish to follow it. But it never is, nor will it ever be good advice. We must never try to avenge evil with more evil, if only because doing so affects the offended more than the offender.

Jesus authoritatively tells us not to seek revenge with wicked persons, because that is exactly what they desire, so that they can retaliate in an even more wicked way.Rather, our response must ideally be in exact contrast to their expectation – offer no resistance and return goodness for evil.

Is this easy? It never is! But it is possible with God’s immense Grace. It stuns the wicked and even frightens them, because it is not the way of the world, but the way of God – the only way to eternal salvation.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Gospel
Matthew 5:38-42
Offer the wicked man no resistance

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I say this to you: offer the wicked man no resistance. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the right cheek, offer him the other as well; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.’
