1 Cor.1:2

God was willing to be appeased (hence the sending of Christ is everywhere in Scripture ascribed to the love and grace of God), but His justice was not actually appeased till the death of Christ. As a Merciful God, He pitied us, but as a Holy God, He could not but hate our transgression; as a God of Truth, He could not but fulfill His own threatening; as a God of Justice, He must avenge himself for the offense against Him. He gave Christ as a God of Mercy, and required satisfaction as a God of Justice. He 'set him forth as a propitiation, that He might be just,' Roms.3:25-26. His mercy rendered him placable, but His righteousness hindered the actual placation. He had a kindness for man, but could not have kindness for his sin; He had compassion for His creature to free him, but no compassion for his transgression to let that go unpunished.

The Christian's Hope
The Christian's Hope is a sure and steadfast one (Heb.6:19) because it rests upon the word and oath of Him that cannot lie. Its is the gift of divine grace (2 Thess 2:16); a fruit of the Spirit (Rom.5:1-5); inseparably connected with faith and love (1 Cor.13:13). It is a living hope because it is exerted by a quickened soul, being an exercise of the new nature or principle of grace received at regeneration. It is a living hope because it has eternal life for its object (Titus 1:2).
