Ganga Dussehra (also called Ganga Dashara) is a sacred Hindu festival that celebrates the descent of Mother Ganga (River Ganges) from heaven to Earth.

What does “Dashara” mean?

The word comes from:

“Ganga” = the holy river goddess
“Dasha” = ten
“Hara” = destroyer/remover

It means “the festival that destroys ten kinds of sins.”

It is observed on the 10th day (Dashami) of the bright fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha (May–June).

The Story Behind Ganga Dashara

According to Hindu tradition, King Bhagiratha performed intense tapasya to bring the heavenly river Ganga down to Earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors and grant them liberation.

When Ganga agreed to descend, her force was so powerful that it could have destroyed the Earth.

So Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks (jata) and gently released her to flow upon Earth.

Because of this, both Mother Ganga and Lord Shiva are worshipped on this day.

Spiritual Importance

People believe bathing in the Ganga on this day:

Removes ten sins
Purifies mind and body
Brings peace to ancestors
Grants spiritual merit
Helps in attaining moksha

Even if one is not near the Ganga, devotees can pray with sincere devotion at home.

How It Is Observed

Devotees usually:

🪔 Take a holy bath
🪔 Offer flowers, दीप (lamps), milk, and fruits to Ganga
🪔 Chant:

“Om Shri Gangayai Namah”

🪔 Perform charity (दान)
🪔 Listen to or recite the story of Ganga’s descent
🪔 Offer prayers to Lord Shiva

Simple Home Puja

If you want to observe it at home:

Bathe early
Place a pot of clean water
Invoke Mother Ganga
Offer flowers and diya
Chant 108 times:
Om Gangayai Namah
Pray for purification and blessings
Donate food or water

Jai Ganga Maiya
