Months ago, he joined our Bible study… Filled with fervor and hunger to know God. Days ago, he was called to be with God. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say RIP to Desno, an EPIC Youth that has changed our lives forever. You have shown us to prepare ourselves this day, for we know not the day when God calls us to stand before His throne in judgement. We pray that you have found favor with Him and that you are eternally worshipping your Father in Heaven. May God comfort and grant peace to your family in their grief and mourning. 🙏🏾

In the same way that a plant cannot grow or survive where it is not rooted, neither can we. If we are not rooted in Him, if we are not connected to His presence as our source, then we won’t grow, we won’t be able to stand, we won’t be able to survive. Assess your growth. What are you rooted in?

Like a plant, we are also growing and so we need something to keep us grounded and connected to God, our source. Here we learn what happens when a believer is not rooted:

“They endure for a while” - Endurance translates from the Greek, hypomonḗ, and means to “remain under” challenges in one’s life as God allows. If you are not rooted in God, you will not possess the ability to endure with steadfastness.

“But when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word” - Tribulation translates from the Greek, thlípsis, which means an internal pressure. Persecution, diōgmós from the Greek, means to chase or hunt in hostility. Therefore, a believer who is not rooted may feel internal pressure by the Word I.e. offended by the truth stirring up a conviction to change which they want to ignore OR when they feel as though they are persecuted for the word I.e. they offend others with truth which may lead to hostility.

“They fall away”- These believers often stumble or fall in their walk with God, that is, are hindered in right conduct and thought.

Are you unrooted? The word of God is going to offend you and it’s going to offend others. When you are not rooted in God, that is, you don’t have a firm connection to His spirit, it is easy to stumble because you compromise on the Word of God to comfort yourself and appease others in sin.

Many of us pursue wealth. It is one of our core motivators. Anything we do, anything we pursue, we are only satisfied when we have A LOT. It’s most commonly money, but can also be power, influence, accolades, friendships, even knowledge of God’s word. Today, we encourage you, you can have wealth in many areas of your life; and while the thing itself may not be bad, it means nothing if you don’t have the wisdom to actually apply it and yield fruit that is of God. Like Solomon, ask God for wisdom FIRST and trust that He will then add unto you your abundance!

Go Deeper Scripture Study - Fear is a foundation?

This scripture gives us three very important words: wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Do you know the difference?
Knowledge - Derivative of the Hebrew word, yada, meaning to ascertain by observation. It is a collection of truth which you acquire through different experiences.
Wisdom - Derivative of the Hebrew word, chakam, meaning to be wise in mind, word or act. It is an application of the knowledge you have acquired to how you think, speak and act.
Understanding - Derivative of the Hebrew word, biyn, meaning to distinguish or separate mentally. It is discernment of two different types of things.

Now let's get into the scripture and for ease of explanation, we will look at it in reverse:
"The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" - When you know of God and have come to be certain that he is real, you have faith in Him. This faith guides what you believe to be right and wrong based on what He has said. You have understanding or discernment between right and wrong or good and bad.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" - However, knowledge of God and right vs. wrong is not enough to apply it to your life. You must fear the Lord i.e. desire to revere and honor him, THEN you apply your knowledge of Him and your understanding of right and wrong to change how you think, how you speak and what you do. THAT is wisdom.

Go Deeper Scripture Study - Three Traits of the True Word of God
In this scripture, God gives us three characteristics through the prophet Isaiah of his Word that we can use to today to discern and stand on what He has spoken.

"It shall not return to me void" - Void means to be empty or in vain. God does not speak just because He can. He does not speak in vain and so when he speaks, his word is intentional and will not go forth without a purpose. Therefore, not every word that is good will be spoken by God.

"It shall accomplish the purpose for which it was sent forth" - When he speaks His word with a purpose, IT HAS TO ACCOMPLISH IT! God's omnipotence is reflected in his Word because it is an extension of his character. You can be assured that whatever has God spoken about you, about your life, about a situation: good or bad, it will come to pass whether it takes a day or a decade. Therefore, not every word from God will be instant but it's manifestation is certain.

"It shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it" - Prosper literally translates "to push forward". God's word is a catalyst. It changes things. It breaks through the impenetrable. It reaches the unclimbable. It realizes the unfathomable. It not only accomplishes the purpose, but it brings with it abundance and prosperity in whatever it is sent forth; whether it is in your personal life, family life, work life, mental state, emotional or physical wellbeing.

“And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.” - Job 42:10

Like Job, when you intercede for others, God intervenes for you! Challenge yourself in your prayer life and watch God show up for you.

Go Deeper Scripture Study - Pray in All things

Supplications - "to make a petition out of a need"
Prayers- " to exchange a wish/want"
Intercessions - "to intervene"
Thanksgivings - " to give thanks for God's grace"

In this scripture, Timothy outlines a list of circumstances that require our prayer for others. We ought to bring others in prayer for their desperate needs. We ought to bring others in prayer and ask God to exchange their wants with his wants. We are to bring others in prayer to intervene when they are being attacked by the enemy. And lastly, we are to bring others in prayer to give thanks to God on their behalf.

Main idea: We must supplicate for our brethren in NEED and pray for our brethren in WANT. We must intercede for our brethren in BAD times and give thanks for their GOOD times.

We often use this scripture in defense of the enemy trying to accuse us and while it is correct in this context, let’s consider another…. What you walk after, what you seek, what your mind is set on achieving will separate conviction and condemnation. If your salvation is based on the flesh I.e. your works, it is much easier for you to experience guilt for something you did/did not do. However, when your salvation is based on the spirit I.e. your faith in what God has done, you understand that it was by grace that they were saved through faith: “and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast… you are more open to receive conviction.” Therefore, this understanding brings the truth that convicts you to change! In the words of MLK, “You work because you ARE saved, not TO BE saved.”

Do you know the difference? Condemnation is aimed at judgement and guilt. It is usually the voice in your head that the enemy uses to accuse you of every bad thing you’ve ever done, with any form of correction. Conviction is aimed at convincing through exposure of truth. It is the voice of God leading you back to righteousness. It tells you where you have gone wrong BUT it exposes truth i.e. it tells you what you can do right or how you can improve/grow. That’s the difference: Is the voice simply point out your wrongdoings as a means of making you feel worthless and guilty? Or is it pointing out your wrongdoings AND using them to show you how to grow?

Food for thought: How do you expect God’s goodness and mercy to FOLLOW you if you refuse to GO anywhere? If you are reluctant to step out in faith? Goodness and mercy follows, as you walk where the shepherds leads!
