TODAY IS THE FEAST DAY OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes
Oh ever immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comfortess of the Afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Look upon me with mercy. When you appeared in the grotto of Lourdes, you made it a privileged sanctuary where you dispense your favors, and where many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. My loving Mother, obtain my request. I will try to imitate your virtues so that I may one day share your company and bless you in eternity. Amen.

Good morning everyone and Happy Wednesday! Today we take a look at the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception. In 1781 there was only one Catholic church in Port of Spain, located behind the present Catholic Cathedral in Tamarind Square. The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the name Immaculate Conception and was a simple structure with a shingle roof. Under Governor Sir Ralph Woodford, a decision was made to construct a new church better suited for the needs of the growing population. On March 24th 1816 Governor Woodford laid the foundation stone of what would become the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception. The building was laid out in the shape of a Latin cross and was built with limestone from the Laventille quarry. The Cathedral was finally completed in 1832 with the first service being held by Rev.Bishop Daniel McDonnell. In 2012 the Cathedral was closed for restoration works and was re-opened and re-dedicated on December 5th 2015.
