คู่แรก!
นับตั้งแต่พวกเราได้ย้ายเข้ามาประจำการที่เกาะสมุยนั้น สิ่งที่เราต้องทำควบคู่ไปกับการอภิบาลวัดในเกาะสมุย 2 แห่งคือวัดนักบุญอันนา ที่บ้านอ่างทอง และวัดแม่พระองค์อุปถัมภ์ ที่เฉวงแล้ว พวกเรายังต้องข้ามไปทำงานอภิบาลที่ “เกาะพะงัน” ด้วย ซึ่งที่เกาะพะงันนี้ เนื่องจากเป็นเขตอภิบาลใหม่ล่าสุด ที่เพิ่งจะเปิดได้ไม่กี่เดือนนี้เอง (ไม่น่าจะถึง 1 ปีอย่างแน่นอน...คงต้องไปสืบประวัติกันอีกที...) และเพราะเป็นเขตงานอภิบาลใหม่ พวกเราจึงได้ “ตกลง” กันว่า พวกเราจะต้องเดินทางไปถวายมิสซาให้ชุมชนใหม่นี้ “ทุกวันเสาร์” เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านได้ “คุ้นชิน” กับตารางมิสซาให้ได้เสียก่อน เนื่องจากที่นี่ยังมีคริสตชนจำนวน “น้อยมาก” วัดของที่นี่จึงใช้เป็น “บ้านน็อคดาวน์” โดยเอามาปรับและขยายให้กว้างขึ้นเล็กน้อย ให้เพียงพอที่จะใช้เป็น “วัดน้อย” ไปพลาง ๆ ก่อนในระยะแรกนี้
และอยู่ดี ๆเมื่อราว 2-3 เดือนก่อน พวกเราก็ได้รับการติดต่อมาจาก “ฝรั่ง” นักท่องเที่ยว โดยเขาได้ติดต่อมาว่า เขาจะมาเที่ยวที่เกาะพะงัน และอยากจัดให้มีพิธีแต่งงานที่วัดของเราที่เกาะพะงันด้วยเลย ซึ่งหลังจากที่พวกเราได้ทราบเรื่องก็ไม่ได้นิ่งนอนใจ จึงได้พยายามติดต่อประสานงานกับทางสำนักมิสซังสุราษฎร์ธานีว่า ในกรณีที่เป็นชาวต่างประเทศเยี่ยงนี้ พวกเราต้องดำเนินการอย่างไรบ้างเพื่อความถูกต้อง และที่สุดก็ได้รับคำแนะนำมาเป็นข้อ ๆ ซึ่งพวกเราก็ได้ทำการติดต่อประสานงานกันทั้งทาง “อีเมล์” และการ “โทรคุยกัน” จนสามารถที่จะจัดเตรียม “เอกสาร” ที่จำเป็นสำหรับการแต่งงานให้เรียบร้อยได้ (แม้จะทุลักทุเลบ้างก็ตามที เพราะภาษาที่เขาใช้คือภาษา “เยอรมัน”...แต่พวกเราถนัดแต่ภาษาไทย ส่วนภาษาอังกฤษก็แค่พอเอาตัวรอด...555)
และวันนี้ก็เป็นวัน “ประวัติศาสตร์” ของวัดแม่พระแห่งเหรียญอัศจรรย์ เกาะพะงัน เลยก็ว่าได้ เพราะวันนี้จะเป็นวันที่วัดน้อยของเราจะมีพิธีแต่งงานเกิดขึ้นตั้งแต่วัดน้อยหลังนี้ได้ก่อสร้างมา โดยที่ทางเจ้าบ่าวเจ้าสาว ก็ได้ “จัดเต็ม” เช่นกัน เพราะได้ยินว่าได้มีการติดต่อ “ออแกนไนซ์เซอร์” ให้มาจัดตกแต่งดอกไม้ และยังมีนักร้อง ตลอดจนมีช่างภาพฯลฯ ด้วย โดยพวกเราก็ได้แต่คิดอยู่ในใจเหมือนกันว่า แล้ววัดเราที่เห็นและเป็นอยู่จะเหมาะสมกับสิ่งที่พวกเขาคาดหวังหรือไม่ แต่พวกเราก็ได้พยายามทำทุกอย่างให้ดีที่สุด เพื่อให้เจ้าข่าวและเจ้าสาว จะได้มี “ความทรงจำ” ที่ดีกลับไปครับผม........................................
The First Couple!
Ever since we moved to serve on Koh Samui, alongside taking care of the two churches there—St. Anna Church in Ang Thong and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Chaweng—we have also had to travel regularly to Koh Phangan for pastoral work. Koh Phangan is the newest pastoral area, opened only a few months ago (certainly less than a year—we’ll need to check the exact history again). And because it is such a new mission area, we agreed among ourselves that we would celebrate Mass for this new community every Saturday, so that the local people could become familiar with the schedule. Since there are still very few Catholics on the island, the church there is just a modified “knock-down house,” expanded a little to serve as a small chapel in this initial stage. Then, quite unexpectedly, about 2–3 months ago, we were contacted by a foreign tourist. He explained that he was coming to Koh Phangan and wanted to have his wedding at our chapel there. Once we heard this, we immediately reached out to the Surat Thani Diocese office to clarify the proper procedures for handling a marriage involving foreigners. We received clear step-by-step instructions, and through emails and phone calls we managed to prepare all the necessary documents (though it was a bit of a struggle since the language used was German—we only manage Thai well, and English just enough to get by… haha).
And today has truly become a “historic day” for Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church on Koh Phangan. For the very first time since the chapel was built, a wedding will be celebrated here. The bride and groom went all out as well, bringing in an organizer to decorate the place with flowers, arranging for singers, photographers, and more. We couldn’t help but wonder whether our humble little chapel would meet their expectations. Still, we did our very best so that the bride and groom could carry home with them beautiful and lasting memories of this special day.
