ST.VINCENT DE PAUL ON MORTIFICATION
“If we are not animated by the spirit of mortificaion how will we live together? We will not be able to live– I repeat we will not be able to live along side one another- if our internal and external senses are not mortified, and not only isnit necessary among ourselves but also in the midst of the poor- where there is so much to suffer.”
"หากเราไม่ได้ถูกขับเคลื่อนด้วยจิตตารมณ์แห่งการรู้จักบังคับตน (ทรมานกายบำเพ็ญตบะ) เราจะอยู่ร่วมกันได้อย่างไร? ข้าพเจ้าขอข้ำอีกครั้งว่า เราจะไม่สามารถดำเนินชีวิตอยู่เคียงข้างกันได้เลย หากประสาทสัมผัสภายนอกและภายในของเราไม่ได้รับการบังคับควบคุม และสิ่งนี้มิได้จำเป็นเฉพาะในหมู่พวกเราเท่านั้น แต่ยังจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งในท่ามกลางคนยากจน—ผู้ซึ่งต้องเผชิญกับความทุกข์ทรมานอย่างมาก"
The purpose of penance and mortification is nothing other than this: “To do our mission well,”
จุดประสงค์ของการใช้โทษบาปและการรู้จักบังคับตนไม่มีสิ่งอื่นใดนอกเหนือไปจากนี้ คือ “เพื่อกระทำพันธกิจของเราให้ดีเยี่ยม”
Each one therefore should be most conscientious in accepting the over ruling of his personal wishes and opinion and in disciplining the gratification of his sense
ดังนี้ ทุกคนจึงควรมีความตระหนักและใส่ใจอย่างที่สุดในการยอมรับการละทิ้งความปรารถนาและความคิดเห็นส่วนตัว และฝึกฝนดัดตนในการระงับความพึงพอใจทางประสาทสัมผัส
He who allows himself to be guided by the lower and animal part of his nature deserves to be called a beast rather than a man.”
ผู้ใดที่ยินยอมให้ตนเองถูกชี้นำโดยธรรมชาติฝ่ายต่ำและฝ่ายสัตว์กิเลส ผู้นั้นก็สมควรได้รับการเรียกว่าเป็นสัตว์ดิรัจฉานมากกว่ามนุษย์"
Whoever makes little account of exterior mortification alleging that the interior ones are more perfect shows clearly that he is not mortified at all.
ผู้ใดก็ตามที่ไม่เห็นความสำคัญของการบังคับตนภายนอก โดยอ้างว่าการบังคับตนภายในนั้นสมบูรณ์แบบกว่า ย่อมแสดงให้เห็นอย่างชัดเจนว่าผู้นั้นไม่ได้มีการบังคับตนเลยแม้แต่น้อย
Mortification is the ABC of spiritual life. Whoever cannot control himself in this will hardly be able to conquer temptations more difficult to subdue
การรู้จักบังคับตนเป็นบทเรียนขั้นพื้นฐาน (ABC) ของชีวิตฝ่ายจิต ผู้ใดก็ตามที่ไม่สามารถควบคุมตนเองในเรื่องนี้ได้ ก็ยากที่จะเอาชนะการผจญหลอกลวงที่สยบได้ยากยิ่งกว่า
