Visakha Bucha Day in Thailand
There are a number of important Buddhist holidays throughout the year, but the most significant in Thailand is Visakha Bucha Day. This day commemorates three defining events in the life of the Lord Buddha which all occurred on the full-moon day of the sixth lunar month (known as the Visakha month). The Visakha full moon marks the day on which Buddha was born, reached his enlightenment 35 years later and the day he died and entered Nirvana 45 years after that. Visakha Bucha Day is a public holiday in Thailand. The date isn’t fixed because it depends on the lunar calendar, but usually falls in May or June. It’s a day when most Thai Buddhists will visit their local temple to make merit. Because it’s such an important Buddhist day in Thailand there are also restrictions on alcohol sales which means that some bars and clubs close for the day.

Visakha Bucha Day is the most important Buddhist holiday in Thailand commemorating three key events in the life of Buddha.

History and Creation of Somdej Ong Pathom (The First Buddha) from the book of Luang Pho Ruesi Lingdam, Wat Tha Sung, Uthai Thani Province
Somdej Ong Pathom was the first Buddha in the world. His name was Somdej Phra Phutthasikhi.
Since there were hundreds of thousands of Buddhas who had attained enlightenment and the name 'Somdej Phra Phutthasikhi' was repeated.
Especially there were 5 of Somdej Phra Phutthasikhi, so Somdej Ong Pathom was called Somdej Phra Phutthasikhi I.
Therefore, it can be said that the Buddha was truly the first Somdej Phra Phutthasikhi, the great professor.
When the Buddha was born into the human world, at that time, people had a lifespan of about 80,000 years.
The Buddha was ordained as a monk at the age of 40,000 years. After being ordained for 20,000 years, he attained the highest enlightenment.
He becamed enlightened and became the first Somdej Phra Buddha in the world. The Buddha taught the people for about 20,000 years before passing away.
