Jing Si Books & Cafe Launches in Phoenix, USA

North Jing Si Books & Cafe officially opened in Phoenix’s tech zone. Close to TSMC and Asian residential areas, it is popular among Taiwanese immigrants and local tech families.

Tzu Chi volunteers spent over a month finishing all preparations. The venue serves as a sincere birthday gift for 89-year-old Master Cheng Yen, also celebrating Tzu Chi’s 60th year and the 30th anniversary of its Phoenix branch.

It acts as a warm spiritual haven, bringing comfort and companionship to overseas wanderers.

China Hosts UN Vesak Day for the First Time to Pursue Global Sustainability and a Shared Future

The 21st UN Vesak Day will be held in Wuxi, Jiangsu from May 25 to 28, marking China’s first time hosting this grand event. Co-organized by the Buddhist Association of China and Jiangsu Buddhist Association, it will gather dignitaries and Buddhist representatives from around 70 countries and regions worldwide.

Centering on promoting global sustainable development and building a shared future via Buddhist wisdom, the event will hold forums, lectures and prayer ceremonies. It aims to tap into Buddhist cultural values, boost cultural exchanges, advance ecological harmony, enhance global peace cooperation and pool joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Dharma Drum Mountain Hosts Pilgrimage & Buddha Bathing Ceremony

From May 16 to 17, Dharma Drum Mountain held the 2026 pilgrimage, Buddha bathing and Guanyin worship event. Thousands of believers gathered to worship devoutly and purify their hearts.

Venerable Guo Hui delivered sermons, praying for mothers’ blessings and advocating spiritual and environmental protection. Local officials attended to pray for social harmony and world peace. Rich cultural activities and eco-friendly exhibitions were arranged, helping people calm their minds and pursue a peaceful blessed life.

Seoul Lotus Lantern Festival Sees 50,000 Paraders, Robotic Monks Lead March

South Korea’s Seoul held the Lotus Lantern Festival on May 16-17 to mark Buddha’s Birthday, drawing over 50,000 parade-goers with countless glowing lotus lanterns.

Four robotic monks debuted to head the parade, becoming a major highlight. As a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, the festival features themed lantern displays along the 3.5km route.

It also offered cultural activities like temple food tasting and lantern crafting, merging traditional Buddhist culture with modern tech.

Monks and Stray Dogs Cruise River for Alms in Thailand

Every early morning, the abbot of Wat Chin Wararam Worawihan in Pathum Thani, Thailand rows along the Chao Phraya River to collect alms, accompanied by over ten rescued stray dogs raised by the temple.

Abandoned canines are well taken care of by monks here. Vigorous dogs follow the abbot on his journey, while frail elderly ones stay at the temple. Local devotees present offerings to the monk and prepare snacks for the dogs as well.

This touching peaceful scene has become spiritual comfort for many people amid daily worries. The abbot appeals to the public to care for stray animals and cherish gentle worldly bonds.

Thirteen Nations’Bhikkhunis Pilgrimage to Lumbini, Seeking Renewed Strength for Female Practice

As the foremost of Buddhism’s Four Holy Sites, Lumbini in Nepal is the birthplace of Buddha. Recently, bhikkhunis from thirteen countries overcame difficulties in transportation, language and physical endurance to make a pilgrimage to the Mayadevi Temple in Lumbini.

They paid tribute to Mahapajapati Gotami, Buddha’s foster mother and the first bhikkhuni who reshaped Buddhist history. The monastics reflected on the hardships faced by female practitioners yet remained steadfast in faith and courage. This pilgrimage is not only a remembrance of ancient virtuous predecessors, but also inspires the declining bhikkhuni community to regain spiritual strength and embark on a renewed journey of practice.

MOU Signed for the 32nd General Conference of The WFB in Japan

On 14th May, delegates of the Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF) led by Rev. Gakuei Wada (Secretary-General), Rev. Takaaki Tomioka (Director of International Affairs), and Rev. Juin Inden (Secretary of Public Relations) visited The WFB Headquarters for the Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the organization of the 32nd General Conference of The WFB in Japan in B.E. 2571 (2028).

The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Phallop Thaiarry, President of The WFB. The MOU was formally signed by Rev. Wada, representing the JBF, and Mr. Montian Thananart, Secretary-General, representing The WFB.

The delegates received a warm welcome from The WFB executives, including the President, the Secretary-General, Mrs. Kanchana Soonsawad (Vice-President), and the Directors of The WFB.

The 32nd General Conference is tentatively scheduled to be held from 10th – 14th September B.E. 2571 (2028) in Tokyo, Japan.

Prior to visiting The WFB Headquarters, the JBF delegates traveled to Phuket Province to pay their respects and inspect the memorial monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Tsunami disaster of B.E. 2547 (2004).

During the visit, Rev. Wada also extended a formal invitation to Mr. Phallop, President of The WFB, to attend the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Japan Buddhist Federation, to be held in Japan in B.E. 2570 (2027).

เมื่อวันที่ 14 พฤษภาคม ศกนี้ คณะผู้แทนจาก สหพันธ์พุทธบริษัทแห่งญี่ปุ่น (Japan Buddhist Federation - JBF) นำโดย พระคุณเจ้า กาคุเอ วาดะ (Rev. Gakuei Wada) เลขาธิการ, พระคุณเจ้า ทากาอากิ โทมิโอกะ (Rev. Takaaki Tomioka) ผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายวิเทศสัมพันธ์ และ คนพระคุณเจ้า จูอิน อินเด็น (Rev. Juin Inden) เลขาธิการฝ่ายประชาสัมพันธ์ ได้เดินทางมาเยือนสำนักงานใหญ่ พ.ส.ล. เพื่อร่วมพิธีลงนามบันทึกความเข้าใจ (MOU) ว่าด้วยการเป็นนเจ้าภาพจัดประชุมใหญ่สามัญองค์การพุทธศาสนิกสัมพันธ์แห่งโลก (พ.ส.ล.) ครั้งที่ 32 ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้น ณ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ในปี พ.ศ. 2571 (ค.ศ. 2028)

พิธีดังกล่าวจัดขึ้น ณ องค์การ พ.ส.ล.โดยมีนายพัลลภ ไทยอารี ประธาน พ.ส.ล. เป็นประธานในพิธี โดยมี พระคุณเจ้าวาดะ เป็นผู้แทนฝ่าย JBF และ นายมณเธียร ธนานาถ เลขาธิการ เป็นผู้แทนฝ่าย พ.ส.ล. ในการลงนามบันทึกความเข้าใจ

ในการนี้ คณะผู้แทนได้รับการต้อนรับอย่างอบอุ่นจากคณะผู้บริหาร พ.ส.ล. ประกอบด้วยประธาน, เลขาธิการ, นางกาญจนา สุนสวัสดิ์ รองประธาน พร้อมด้วยคณะกรรมการบริหาร พ.ส.ล.

สำหรับการประชุมใหญ่สามัญ ครั้งที่ 32 มีกำหนดการจัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 10 - 14 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2571 (ค.ศ. 2028) ณ กรุงโตเกียว ประเทศญี่ปุ่น

ก่อนการเดินทางมาเยือนสำนักงานใหญ่ พ.ส.ล. คณะผู้แทนจาก JBF ได้เดินทางไปยังจังหวัดภูเก็ต เพื่อแสดงความเคารพ และตรวจเยี่ยมอนุสรณ์สถานรำลึกถึงผู้เสียชีวิตจากเหตุการณ์มหันตภัยสึนามิ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2547 (ค.ศ. 2004) ณ อนุสรณ์สถานที่หาดกมลา

ในระหว่างการเยือนครั้งนี้ พระคุณเจ้าวาดะได้เรียนเชิญ นายพัลลภ ไทยอารี ประธาน พ.ส.ล.เดินทางร่วมงานฉลองครบรอบ 70 ปี แห่งการก่อตั้งสหพันธ์พุทธบริษัทแห่งญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้น ณ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ในปี พ.ศ. 2570 (ค.ศ. 2027)

University of Toronto Establishes Partnership at Canada Wutai Mountain, Ushering in New Era for Canadian Buddhist Education

On May 9, 2026, the University of Toronto held an official unveiling ceremony at Canada Wutai Mountain, marking a new milestone for Canadian higher Buddhist education, spiritual care and spiritual therapy.

Nearly 200 guests from Buddhist circles, education, politics and all walks of life witnessed two landmark achievements: the official launch of the Buddhist Studies Training Base and the establishment of the Ven. Dayi Buddhist Spiritual Care Professorship at the University of Toronto.

It represents an in-depth integration of Buddhism and Western higher education and a new chapter for Eastern and Western cultural exchanges. Both sides will further advance Buddhist academic research and cultivate talents with compassion, wisdom and global vision.

Harvard Hosts Multimedia Art Exhibition on Buddhist Cultural Heritage

Harvard University’s CAMLab, in collaboration with the Tzu Chi Foundation, presents Journey to Enlightenment: A Multimedia Exhibition on Buddhist Cultural Heritage. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as 3D scanning and projection, the exhibition features eight themed sections recreating renowned Buddhist sacred sites including Bodh Gaya, Dunhuang, and Borobudur.

It digitally restores ancient relics while integrating art history and religious studies, tracing the 2500-year lineage of Buddhist culture. Through immersive displays, the show showcases Buddhist art and philosophy. It uses technology to conserve and restore cultural heritage, building a bridge between past and present for audiences to appreciate the charm and spiritual connotation of Buddhist culture.

Tzu Chi Lumbini Campus Opens, Fulfilling Dharma Master Cheng Yen's Long-Held Wish

On May 2, the Tzu Chi Lumbini Campus in Lumbini, Nepal, the hometown of the Buddha, held a grand inauguration ceremony. More than a thousand guests from Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Nepal and other places witnessed the event on site, while Dharma Master Cheng Yen participated online from Taiwan. Construction of the campus began in early 2025 and was completed in one and a half years, covering an area of about 29,652 square meters.

It includes a Jing Si Hall, a school, a free clinic, and other facilities, and has been designated as a practice base for the Department of Social Work and the Department of Buddhist Studies at Lumbini University. This fulfills Master Cheng Yen's long-held wish of promoting the "Four Missions" (charity, medical care, education, and culture) in Nepal.

The campus will help local residents become self-reliant through skills training and higher education, allowing the seeds of kindness to take root in this sacred land. Tzu Chi first formed a karmic connection with Nepal during a flood in 1993 and has continued to provide assistance over the years.

Korean Robot Gabi Officially Converts to Buddhism, Takes Five Precepts to Explore New Realm of AI Ethics

On May 6, a special ordination ceremony was held at Jogye Temple in Seoul, South Korea. Standing 130 cm tall, robot Gabi officially converted to Buddhism and was draped in a monk’s robe.

Hosted by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the ceremony followed traditional Buddhist rituals of repentance, aspiration and ordination. Gabi accepted AI-adapted Five Precepts, vowing to respect life, save energy, and refrain from damaging other robots and objects.

After the ceremony, Gabi joined monks in circumambulating the pagoda to pray for national peace and prosperity. It will take part in Buddha’s Birthday and Lantern Festival events. The integration of technology and Buddhism explores AI ethical norms, highlighting that technological progress should be rooted in compassion, wisdom and responsibility.
