🌿Vesak, also known as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Day, is one of the most important festivals in the Buddhist calendar. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvana), and death (parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. The exact date varies according to the lunar calendar, but it generally falls on the full moon day in May.
Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Decorations: Lanterns, known as Vesak koodu, are made from bamboo frames covered with colorful paper and are illuminated at night. Streets, homes, and public spaces are adorned with these lanterns and other decorations, creating a festive atmosphere. Thoranas: These are large illuminated displays that depict scenes from the Buddha's life, often accompanied by stories and messages about his teachings. Temple Activities: Devotees engage in various religious activities, including observing sil (a practice of maintaining moral precepts), meditation, and listening to sermons. Dansal: Free food and drink stalls are set up by volunteers to serve all passersby, reflecting the Buddhist virtue of generosity.

Merit-Making: Thais visit temples early in the morning to offer food and other necessities to monks. This act of giving is believed to generate good karma. Candlelit Processions: In the evening, devotees join candlelit processions around the main chapel in the temples.
