MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 53 ❖

Distinguishing four understandings of Dhamma makes a comprehensive study of Dhamma convenient: understand Nature itself, the Law of Nature, Duty according to the Natural Law, and the Fruits which come from practicing that Duty, until able to live life in harmony with Nature and without any problems.

Food for Thought | Some Teachings of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu

❖ Food for Thought 48 ❖

Studying the principles of Dhamma helps us to gradually come to realization that if we nourish only our physical being, we are fattening up only one aspect of our lives. While the other aspect - the mind - remains malnourished. The end result is that the body is the picture of health, while the mind is foggy, melancholic, and thin.

❖ Look More Closely ❖

The Buddha avoided philosophical debates on practical grounds. Life is short, he said – like dew in the sun – therefore, you should be very careful about the things to which you choose to give your time and effort. The criteria for your choices should be the degree to which something contributes to progress on the path to liberation, or at least does not detract from it. The Buddha considered the popular debates on the nature of reality of his time as failing this test.

The Buddha’s most profound observations bear within them a profound challenge: Look more closely. He summarised all the various beliefs and views of his time, including the eternalist and annihilationist positions still popular today. He said that all such views are based upon grasping at the five khandas: form, feeling tone, perception, mental formations and consciousness as being self or belonging to self. Rather than arguing with religious and philosophical teaching he said: Look for yourself at the nature of your body and mind. Seek to understand the ground of your beliefs. Recognise their contingency.

MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 52 ❖

The thing which is called “Self” is merely an illusion (maya), that is, merely a sensation that arises in the mind when concocted by taṇhā (desire influenced by avijjā, ignorance), through which it appears in the mind naturally and automatically. It is merely a misperception caused by the thing called “upādanā” (clinging) which comes from taṇhā. It is not a real or true self, but is only a sensation blowing hot and cold, yet with an intensity such that the experiencer takes it to be “self.”

Food for Thought | Some Teachings of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu

❖ Food for Thought 47 ❖

Studying the principles of the Dhamma help us to first realize that we have two facts to our body; the bodily form and the Dhamma body. Our body develops due to our parents care-we grow due to a number of factors, such as vegetables, proteins, and other nourishment - but the Dhamma-body concern the overall health of our physical form, our speech, and our mind. Both of these aspects of our being are the foundations of freedom; they sustain and nourish all kinds of growth.

❖ The Fallibility and Unreliability of Our Minds ❖

In the climax of Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Othello is convinced that his wife, Desdemona, has been unfaithful. Seeing that Othello intends to kill her, and realising that she can’t prove her innocence, Desdemona is struck with terror, and breaks down in tears. Othello interprets her reaction as proof of guilt. His mistake is in failing to understand that an innocent person facing an accusation that may lead to death, injury or loss of reputation, may tremble, break out in a sweat, show anxiety, fear etc. in a manner indistinguishable from that of a guilty person.

Human beings are not very good at detecting when they are being lied to. In studies, a random control group of university students will have a success rate of about 54%. Not so surprising, perhaps. What is more surprising is that police officers, judges, professional ‘lie-catchers’ are hardly more proficient, scoring between 55-60%. The main difference between the groups is that the professionals tend to be far more confident in their judgements, despite many studies showing zero (!) correlation between their confidence and whether they are actually right. Whereas the control group reveals a positive bias, believing liars to be telling the truth, law enforcement professionals often perceive innocent people to be lying.

Recognising the fallibility and unreliability of our minds is a key step on the path to wisdom. If you are sure you can read somebody ‘like a book’, even a loved one, you are probably, to one degree or another, wrong.

MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 51 ❖

The true principles of practice need not extend over the kind of lifetimes that end in coffins. They are exclusively sandiṭṭhiko and akāliko, that is, immediately apparent to the mind that acts and receives the results of the actions. The later aspects are just material by-products experienced by ordinary Thicksters.

ZEN OX HERDING PICTURES
Painting 10/10

The old sage on the left represents an enlightened person, who has no attachment to a sense of self and lives only for the benefit of others. In one hand he carries a lantern, which symbolizes illuminating knowledge, and on his back he carries a large sack filled with useful things to share with others. The sage is capable of helping his fellow human beings both mentally and physically—his wisdom shines forth on the spiritual path for others, and his lack of attachment to material possessions allows him to freely give things away.

Standing on the right side of the picture is the young man who has tamed the ox. He has traveled until he encounters the sage, or wise giver. Life is being compared to a journey, on which we human beings travel until we find the wise giver, which refers to the Buddha or the Enlightened Ones who illuminate the world with their wisdom and insight. Upon finding the wise giver, we come into contact with the awakened state of Buddhahood, and see the possibility of enlightenment within ourselves. After receiving guidance, we follow the footsteps of the Enlightened Ones to transcend the world and achieve the purest happiness possible for human beings. Eventually, we can start living an illuminating and charitable life purely for the good of others.

❖ Reliable Indicators of Integrity ❖

In a Jātaka tale, a wealthy but credulous man decides to bury all his gold in the hermitage of an ascetic he reveres. The ascetic is corrupt. He digs up the gold, and reburies it in a new place. The next day he takes leave of his benefactor, claiming that staying in one place for too long is a hindrance to non-attachment. As he walks away, the ascetic starts to worry that when the theft is discovered, he will be a suspect. He returns to his benefactor’s home and points to some strands of straw stuck in his hair. He says that he’s come to return them. They must have come from the roof of the benefactor’s house. His precepts wouldn’t allow him to take anything not given freely, even a single strand of straw. As he hopes, the man is deeply impressed by his scrupulosity. But a friend of the benefactor is immediately suspicious. He urges the man to check on his gold. Sure enough, it’s gone. They chase after the ascetic and force him to tell them where he’s hidden the gold.

The Buddha said that some people are drawn to spiritual teachers by their physical appearance, some by the sound of their voice or their good reputation. Others are inspired by strictness and asceticism. None are reliable indicators of integrity. Even psychic powers can be faked. The only trustworthy criterion is whether the teacher truly applies him or herself to the practice of sīla, samādhi and paññā.

MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 50 ❖

Saiyasastra is the “Creed of Sleeping” (through avijjā, ignorance), while Buddhasastra is the “Creed of Awakening from Sleep” (through vijjā, wisdom). So be careful of activities concerning Buddha images and amulets, for there are those that are Buddhasastra and those that are Saiyasastra, depending on whether a person regards them with vijjā or with avijjā and upādāna.
