Food for Thought | Some Teachings of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu

❖ Food for Thought 65 ❖

As soon as we partake of the highest penetrating insight, all mental obscurities are sloughed off and the tranquillity of nibbana is experienced. It is difficult to make this generally understood; it is a taste difficult to describe. Even though I would like to tell you about it, I am not exactly sure how to put it.

❖ The Inside to Out and the Outside to In ❖

Dhamma practice works both from the inside to out and the outside to in. An example of this is that the practice of mettā improves our conduct. As we generate thoughts of goodwill to all beings without exception again and again, those thoughts become the default mode in our minds. As a result, angry, aggressive, spiteful, vindictive thoughts arise less and less. With the lessening of these thoughts, the occasions on which we act or speak in violent ways consequently decreases. We are able to give the gift of safety to those around us more easily. Thus inner cultivation assists the purification of sīla.

At the same time, perhaps less obviously, the practice of sīla strengthens mettā. If we constantly bear in mind the determination to refrain from all kinds of physical and verbal violence, this steadfast refusal to act upon angry, aggressive, spiteful and vindictive thoughts weakens them. Without external expression feeding them, they wither and allow space for mettā to flourish. Even without a regular mettā practice, spontaneous thoughts of affection and compassion for others – humans, animals, insects even cockroaches, lizards and snakes – arise through refraining from all kinds of violence towards them. Thus external restraint assists the purification of the mind.

MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 69 ❖

The dukkha concocting aspect of 𝘱𝘢ṭ𝘪𝘤𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘱𝘱ā𝘥𝘢 (dependent origination) happens every time the mind craves, that is, when it is stupid at 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢; and when there is stupid 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢, 𝘷𝘦𝘥𝘢𝘯ā is foolish, too. Then, due to the influence of 𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘫𝘫ā, 𝘵𝘢ṅ𝘩ā is born and defilement takes over. So be careful. Don’t be stupid at any 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢 and let the dukkha side of 𝘱𝘢ṭ𝘪𝘤𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘱𝘱ā𝘥𝘢 happen.

Food for Thought | Some Teachings of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu

❖ Food for Thought 64 ❖

When we bathe, we experience the freshness of the water. When the mind attains the final goal, it experiences the tranquillity of nibbana. This tranquillity is a special, spiritual food of the highest order.

❖ The Relationship Between the Inner and Outer ❖

One of the things that first drew me to Buddhism as a teenager – and has continued to occupy my mind ever since – is its examination of the relationship between the inner and outer. How important the Buddha considered this relationship to be is demonstrated by his designation of the path to liberation as Dhamma-Vinaya. It is an all-encompassing education of our inner and outer worlds, mind and body/conduct, self and others.

Dhamma is concerned with the way things are, why they are like this, which mental states conceal truth and cause suffering, which mental states reveal truth and eliminate suffering. Vinaya refers to all the means by which we can support the study, practice and realisation of Dhamma. On the social level, Vinaya may take the form of laws, regulations, protocols, agreements, customs, traditions etc. On the individual level it refers to the voluntary adoption of behavioural boundaries i.e. precepts, to sense restraint, moderation, right livelihood. The Buddha was ‘vijjācarana sampanno’, perfect in knowledge and conduct. He declared the primacy of the mind but never overlooked the importance of the material world.

If we lack an adequate and reliable supply of food, clothing, shelter or access to medical care in times of sickness, consistent Dhamma practice is next to impossible. If we mistreat our bodies, if we’re dishonest, if we behave badly to the people around us, we end up feeding the very defilements that we are trying to abandon in meditation. The Buddha’s teachings form a holistic system, in which every part has its own role to play. We abandon the unwholesome, cultivate the wholesome, and purify our minds, emphasising one or other according to time and place.

MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 68 ❖

The world is accomplished through the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Because we have eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, there is a world. Various troublesome situations happen just because of misunderstanding the truth of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, in other words, the world.

❖ Food for Thought 63 ❖

Peace means the tranquillity that comes from a mind that has attained nibbana or a condition of openness and emptiness that constitutes freedom, a going beyond all things: beyond body and mind, and beyond all the laws limiting body and mind. It is something that no one can put limitations on, except in a hypothetical sense

❖ Aware of Attempted Manipulation ❖

Cultivating mindfulness helps us to be aware and thus protected from attempted manipulation. Attempted manipulation takes many forms depending on its aims: to make us believe, agree, consent, consume, do something, not do something etc. In most cases it consists of an implicit or explicit appeal. With some appeals the emphasis is on a particular way of looking at or making sense of things. For example, someone might try to persuade us to carry on with some misguided activity, because stopping would render all our previous efforts and sacrifices meaningless. If we can recall in time (be mindful) of the ‘sunken cost fallacy’ we would remind ourselves that meaningless losses in the past don’t justify us in committing to further meaningless losses in the future. Appeals are also often made to unexamined biases regarding authority, popularity, tradition and innovation, and to confused ideas about causality.

Many appeals aim straight at the emotions: greed, anger (the most affective), lust, pride, pity, fear of physical dangers, fear of being ridiculed, rejected, ignored. Mindfulness can keep us grounded and calm in this kind of assault, but even our values and principles can be targeted. “Give up X, don’t be so selfish. If you were really unselfish, a good person, you’d choose Y”

Buddhists tend to be susceptible to an appeal to moderation. Someone creates two opposing factors, the ‘extremes’, and positions their own view between them as a middle way. But a middle way between two wrongs is not the Buddha’s middle way. The middle way between the first precept and killing animals indiscriminately? It’s not killing for food. It is the first precept, not an extreme at all.

MAY WE LEAVE THIS LEGACY WITH YOU | Section II Legacies Spiritual & Intellectual

❖ Legacy 67 ❖

The ABCs of Buddhism don’t start off with the Triple Gem, but begin with studying the stimulation of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, and how these cause the arising of consciousness, contact, and feeling (𝘷𝘪ññāṇ𝘢, 𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢, and 𝘷𝘦𝘥𝘢𝘯ā) in such a way that 𝘵𝘢ṇ𝘩ā, 𝘶𝘱ā𝘥ā𝘯𝘢, and then dukkha occur. Control these births and you can quench dukkha. Then Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha will appear by themselves.

When the mind is progressively fed and nurtured to the point of attaining nibbana - having eliminated all stains and misguided tendencies - it continues to be nourished by the taste of nibbana. Peace is the flavor of nibbana! And the peaceful mind provides sustenance for other things!
