YIELDING

But yielding to Jesus will break every kind of slavery in any person’s life.

…you are that one’s slaves whom you obey… —Romans 6:16

The first thing I must be willing to admit when I begin to examine what controls and dominates me is that I am the one responsible for having yielded myself to whatever it may be. If I am a slave to myself, I am to blame because somewhere in the past I yielded to myself. Likewise, if I obey God I do so because at some point in my life I yielded myself to Him.

If a child gives in to selfishness, he will find it to be the most enslaving tyranny on earth. There is no power within the human soul itself that is capable of breaking the bo***ge of the nature created by yielding. For example, yield for one second to anything in the nature of lust, and although you may hate yourself for having yielded, you become enslaved to that thing. (Remember what lust is— “I must have it now,” whether it is the lust of the flesh or the lust of the mind.) No release or escape from it will ever come from any human power, but only through the power of redemption. You must yield yourself in utter humiliation to the only One who can break the dominating power in your life, namely, the Lord Jesus Christ. “…He has anointed Me…to proclaim liberty to the captives…” (Luke 4:18 and Isaiah 61:1).

When you yield to something, you will soon realize the tremendous control it has over you. Even though you say, “Oh, I can give up that habit whenever I like,” you will know you can’t. You will find that the habit absolutely dominates you because you willingly yielded to it. It is easy to sing, “He will break every fetter,” while at the same time living a life of obvious slavery to yourself. But yielding to Jesus will break every kind of slavery in any person’s life.

3 Steps in Aligning Ourselves with Christ

God says we must be aligned with Him before we can be effective anywhere and to anyone else. Our identity is not in our families, our careers, our ministries. God lent us those things, but they are not who we are at our core – God is. If He is not first, He is not on our list.

These are 3 steps in aligning ourselves with Christ.

1. Intentional prayer before our feet hit the floor

We are at war with sin, and as 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 tells us, we don’t wage war as the world does, but rather through divine power given to us by God which can demolish every stronghold. This verse also reminds us that through prayer, we can take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.

The enemy doesn’t really care if we are a Christian, for many of us we have already made that decision, but he does care if we are an effective Christian. He wants to weigh us down with so many meaningless battles that we are spiritually drained and make little to no impact in the places that really matter to the heart of God. God gave us an incredibly powerful gift in prayer and it’s vital we use it to discern the battles we must fight and request divine power for the war.

2. Train ourselves to study scripture

In so many ways we study to gain knowledge when it comes to our career, politics, our health, etc. And those are fine and well, but why don’t we hunger for the God-breathed words of scripture more than anything else? If we want growth, if we want to love and lead our families well, we must study God’s message to us like our lives truly do depend on it and train ourselves each day to implement it in every word and decision.

3. Worship so our realities change

The Bible uses the words ‘Worship God’ over 8,000 times. Romans 12:1 says, “Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.” Worship is a way of offering ourselves to our Creator as a living sacrifice, welcoming the Holy Spirit in to change us and our perspective. There are so many times when we feel like God is distant from a situation or from our lives as a whole, but then we have that moment of uninterrupted, focused worship and He feels as close as the air we breathe. We are as near to Heaven in that moment as we can be on Earth and we begin to focus on the realities of eternity, rather than the realities of this world.

When we don’t apply these steps, sin works into the cracks of our lives and the enemy manifests into every aspect, leaving us crumbling from within. May we take our sin captive and focus on aligning with Christ as we never have before.
