Lord, please give me the courage to put my faith into action.

Ezra 10:4
4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.

When Ezra was down on the floor praying and confessing to God the people came to him for help. They encouraged him to get up and to be brave enough to take action. It’s always good to pray and the Bible says we should pray at all times and in all places. But there also comes a time when we need to have the courage to act. Our faith is truly put to the test when we decide to put our words into action. Living by faith takes courage. It means that our faith is strong enough that we can trust the Lord to guide us when we’re not sure which way to go, that we’re confident that He will give us strength when we are weak and that we’re sure He’ll be with us and take care of us in every situation. Taking action is an excellent way for us to proclaim our faith and trust in God. It proves that we know He is faithful and that He’ll never leave us.

How amazing it will be when we see Jesus our redeemer face to face!

Job 19:25-27
25 I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

It’s been said that the greatest gift we can give someone is to lay down our life for them. The good news for us is that Jesus our redeemer did just that. He willingly gave His life on the cross for us so that our sins could be forgiven. Other good news is that our redeemer didn’t stay dead. After three days in the grave Jesus was raised back to life again and He is living and reigning in heaven forever. More good news is that everyone who believes in Jesus also will be raised from the dead and will live forever in heaven with Jesus. Death had no power over Jesus and it has no power over believers in Jesus. Because Jesus lives, everyone who believes in Him also will live forever with Him in heaven.

In heaven we’ll have perfect peace in the perfect place God has prepared for us.

2 Corinthians 5:1
1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

It’s good for us to be reminded that our time here on earth is temporary and that we only live in our body for a short time. Through faith in Jesus we have God’s promise of a permanent residence that’s waiting for us in paradise. That home will certainly be much better than anything we can have on earth and the eternal life that we’ll be given will far surpass the life we’re living now. These truths give us great hope and joy and take away any fear that we might have of dying. We know what awaits us beyond the grave. For believers in Jesus death is the open door that frees us from the struggles and pains that are a normal part of earthly life and that welcomes us into the loving, peaceful presence of God. Jesus has personally prepared the perfect place for us to spend eternity.

In good times and bad times God is always with us.

Psalm 23:1, 4
1 The Lord is my shepherd. I am never in need. 4 Even though I walk through the dark valley of death, because you are with me, I fear no harm. Your rod and your staff give me courage.

Typically in the Bible the mountaintops and other high places are where people go to worship and where God comes to meet His people. These locations are where people find hope and comfort. Valleys in the Bible are often identified as places for trash, graves, war, suffering, judgment, death. Many times they are associated with danger, stress and fear. When King David wrote Psalm 23 he expressed his complete confidence that the Lord was with him everywhere, even if he had to walk through the dark valley of death. King David knew he had nothing to fear because the Lord would be there with him. The same is true for us today. When we feel down or afraid because we’re going through a dark, difficult time, we can be at peace. We have a God who not only meets us on the high places, but stays with us when we struggle through the valleys of life. We are never alone. Our loving God not only knows when we are in a valley, He goes through it with us to guide us, guard us and give us strength.

God’s love for us will never change.

Isaiah 54:10
10 “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

We can completely trust in God’s love for us because it will never fail or be shaken. Nothing can cause God’s love for us to fade and He will never take it away. Everything in this world and in our lives is temporary, but God’s love is forever. Nothing that we say or do will ever change God’s love for us, because God’s love is perfect and He never changes. Regardless of what disasters are happening around us, whatever challenges or hardships or suffering we face, however dark and dangerous the world may seem, we can be at peace and not be afraid, because we will always be surrounded by our gracious God’s unfailing love for us. God Himself is the source of love, so His love will never run out. He will faithfully guard us, guide us and provide us with all that we need.

We obey God’s command when we care for others as we care for ourselves.

Matthew 22:35-39
35 One of them, an expert in Moses’ Teachings, tested Jesus by asking, 36 “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in Moses’ Teachings?” 37 Jesus answered him, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and most important commandment. 39 The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’”

Some people ask how they can love their neighbor as themselves, if they don’t love themselves. They have negative feelings about themselves because they think they are unimportant, a bad person or useless. They may be disappointed in themselves because of a mistake they made, a failure they experienced or terrible attitude they may have. They judge themselves to be worthless and may claim that they hate themselves. However, even if we despise ourselves, we still maintain a self-love that moves us to take care of ourselves. When we’re hungry, we feed ourselves so we can relieve those uncomfortable hunger pangs. When we’re tired, we go to sleep in our bed. If we feel cold, we put on warm clothing. We can love our neighbors as ourselves by taking care of them when they’re in need in the same way we care for ourselves. We love them by doing the things we would want them to do for us, if we were in their situation (Matthew 7:12)

Thank you, Lord, for all the quiet miracles in our lives that you do every day.

Luke 23:8
8 Herod was very pleased to see Jesus. For a long time he had wanted to see him. He had heard about Jesus and hoped to see him perform some kind of miracle.

We all love to have gifted individuals entertain us. It’s exciting to watch spectacular feats accomplished by top athletes, fascinating to observe someone doing magic tricks, stimulating to listen to an accomplished musician, mesmerizing to follow the movement of a gifted dancer. King Herod thought it would be fun to witness Jesus performing some kind of miracle. But Jesus was not an entertainer. He never did anything simply to amuse someone. The reasons that Jesus did miracles and wondrous signs were to relieve suffering, defeat the work of Satan and reveal the glory of God. Through the miracles that Jesus did we can see not only the power and glory of God, but also His great love and compassion for sinners. As wonderful as those special miracles of Jesus were, it’s important for us to always remember and thank God for the quiet, hidden miracles that He does every day to sustain creation and bless His people and especially for the miracle of salvation and eternal life through Jesus.

God always knows what we need and how to take care of us.

1 Kings 19:9, 11-13
9 There [Elijah] went into a cave and spent the night. Then the Lord spoke his word to Elijah. He asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 11 God said, “Go out and stand in front of the Lord on the mountain.” As the Lord was passing by, a fierce wind tore mountains and shattered rocks ahead of the Lord. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake there was a fire. But the Lord wasn’t in the fire. And after the fire there was a quiet, whispering voice. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his coat, went out, and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then the voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah was very stressed and discouraged because people were angry with him and wanted to harm him. He was exhausted from the pressure he faced. When he became depressed he ran away and asked God to take his life. Elijah said that he just couldn’t handle any more challenges and attacks. God heard Elijah’s prayers and cries for help and went to meet with Elijah. Usually when God came down to earth, He did so with magnificent displays of His power and glory. Sometimes he entered the world in a windstorm that was so powerful it broke huge rocks off the mountain. Other times God arrived in a scorching fire or strong earthquake. But God knew that Elijah didn’t need examples of God’s greatness and authority. Because God knew Elijah needed encouragement, compassion and support, this time God came in a quiet, gentle, comforting voice. God always knows what His people need, so He provides the best thing at the right time in the best way to each person, thus powerfully demonstrating His love, great grace and mercy.

Let go of the old things; be amazed at the new thing God is doing.

Isaiah 43:16, 18-19
16 This is what the Lord says—he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, 18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

One problem with thinking about things that happened in the past is that those memories tend to keep us anchored in the past. Whether they are positive recollections of happy experiences we enjoyed or negative thoughts about disappointments or regrets, focusing too much attention on things that happened long ago can prevent us from moving forward. We have to be careful that we don’t let the discouragements of the past discourage us from facing the challenges and opportunities that are ahead of us. We need to learn from our past mistakes, praise God for our successes, turn our attention to the new things that God is doing and make ourselves available to be used by God in new and different ways. God has a plan and He will continue moving that plan toward completion. If we keep looking backward, then we may miss seeing Him reveal the new and wonderful thing He is doing today.

The Lord is always our one sure hope in times of trouble.

Psalm 94:17-19
17 If the Lord had not come to help me, my soul would have quickly fallen silent in death. 18 When I said, “My feet are slipping,” your mercy, O Lord, continued to hold me up. 19 When I worried about many things, your assuring words soothed my soul.

There are times in our lives when it seems that all hope is gone. We are unable to see an answer to our problems and can find no one to help us. It is in those desperate times that we can discover the reality of God’s concern and care for us. When we are afraid or worried, we can turn to His Word and receive assurance that He loves us, is with us and has everything under control. We can read His promises to protect us, to provide for us and to guide us through every situation, no matter how frightening or difficult they may be. When we remember His words and truly trust Him to do all that He says, then we can experience real comfort and true peace. Our own wisdom and abilities may fall short of what we need to save ourselves and people may disappoint us, but God’s mercy and compassion will never fail. He is always ready and able to rescue us. We only need to call to Him.

There’s no reason to wonder or doubt, because God’s words are true and His promises are sure.

Numbers 23:19
19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it happen?

With all the misinformation and disinformation swirling around us via social media, cable news networks, blogs, podcasts, newspapers, emails and others, it’s difficult to know what to believe. With celebrities, influencers and average citizens being able to proclaim their personal perspectives, opinions and theories as if they were proven facts and many politicians changing their minds with every shift of the political winds, it’s difficult to know whom to believe. Fortunately, God is not like that. We can trust His word because everything He tells us is true. God never lies or changes His mind. He keeps all His promises; He always does what He says He’ll do. When Jesus walked the earth He revealed that He Himself is the truth and all His words and actions are true and can be trusted, because He is the Son of God. When He says our sins are forgiven, they are forgiven. When He promises He’s with us and preparing a place for us with Him in heaven, we have no doubt that it’s true.

God is faithful to guide us when we witness for Him.

Numbers 22:27-31
27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” 29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” 30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said. 31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.

Some of us want to share the Gospel with unbelievers, but when we have an opportunity to tell them about Jesus, we keep our mouths closed. Maybe we’re afraid they’ll react negatively or we worry that we won’t know what to say. We don’t want to make a mistake, so we think that it’s better to say nothing rather than to say the wrong thing. Why do we have so little faith? If God can give a donkey the ability to speak, surely He can give us the ability to speak! We should have no doubt that God can and will give us the words to tell others about God’s love, peace, joy and forgiveness that they can have through faith in Jesus. We can assure them that God will do the same things in their lives that He does in our lives. God can certainly use each of us to tell someone the good news about Jesus. We just need to trust Him, open our mouths and let the Holy Spirit do His work.
