God is worthy of our thanks and praise.

1 Chronicles 16:34
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.

When we were children, our parents taught us to give thanks to people who gave us something or who did something nice for us. We were told that this was the polite thing to do. The Bible tells us that it’s important for us to give thanks to God. We don’t give Him thanks because it’s polite, we thank God because He is good and deserves our thanks and praise. He loves us with a perfect, unconditional love that never ends. The Bible reminds us that every good and perfect gift we have is from our heavenly Father (James 1:17). When we stop to think about all the blessings that we receive from Him, we can’t help but be grateful. Not only does He bless us with His mercy, grace, forgiveness and promise of eternal life, but He also blesses us throughout each day with His guidance, protection and perfect peace. Even our clothes, food and shelter, family and friends are ours because of His love for us. Especially in stressful, painful times it’s good for us to thank Him for His love and goodness to us. Let’s not delay; let’s make today a day of thanksgiving to God when we take time to specifically identify, think about and thank God for the many blessings that He has given us.

We have two options: life and prosperity or death and destruction. Choose God’s way. Choose life.

Deuteronomy 30:15-16, 19
[Moses said,] 15 Today I offer you life and prosperity or death and destruction. 16 This is what I’m commanding you today: Love the Lord your God, follow his directions, and obey his commands, laws, and rules. Then you will live, your population will increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you’re about to enter and take possession of. 19 I call on heaven and earth as witnesses today that I have offered you life or death, blessings or curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants will live.

God created Adam and Eve with free will. He gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their love for Him by obeying His command to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Unfortunately, they listened to the devil, believed what he said and chose to disobey God. As a result, they experienced suffering, death and separation from God. Years later, when many of God’s people were disobeying His commands and turning to other gods, Moses offered them two choices: life and prosperity or death and destruction. If they chose to love God and to obey His commands, then they would live and be blessed. If they decided to not obey Him, then they would be cursed and perish. As God’s people today, we have those same options. With the help of His Spirit we can choose life as we continue to faithfully love, worship and obey God or we can yield to the devil’s deceitful temptations as Adam and Eve did. Today and every day it’s important that we commit ourselves to drawing close to God through prayer and studying His Word, to resist the devil and to give our lives in service to the Lord. Loving God and following His commands are the way to life and blessings. Any other way leads to disaster and death.

When you’re not sure what to pray for, trust God’s Spirit to help you and to intercede for you.

Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

One of the greatest and most powerful blessings that God has given us is the privilege of approaching Him in prayer. The fact that He not only allows us to speak to Him, but that He actually invites us to pray and tells us to always pray are very clear indications of His love and grace for everyone who believes in Him. Unfortunately, there are times when we don’t know how to pray or what we should pray for. Some desires, concerns and fears are difficult for us to express in words. Sometimes we don’t even know ourselves exactly what we want, what’s best for us or what God’s will is, so we struggle to bring our wishes and worries to God in prayer. The good news is that we can trust God’s Spirit to give us the words to pray and to help us when we don’t know how to pray or what to pray for. It’s encouraging to know that the Holy Spirit even intercedes for us to our heavenly Father in ways that don’t require words and that are according to God’s will. So, we can be at peace when we approach God in prayer, knowing that He welcomes us and fully confident that He hears us and will answer us according to His perfect will.

In our darkest moments, when we wonder where God is, He’s with us, just as He promised.

Genesis 28:12-13, 15-16
12 [Jacob] had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

There are times when we feel lonely, even though other people are around us, because we don’t have any relationship with them. Although they are close to us physically, we aren’t connected to them emotionally, so we feel alone. As God’s people we might sometimes experience a different type of loneliness. In some stressful situations, when we’re struggling with a difficult decision or problem or when we’re facing disappointment or discouragement it can seem like God is far from us and not hearing our prayers. When that happens some people experience a type of spiritual loneliness because they don’t feel God’s presence. Fortunately, we can avoid slipping into that negative frame of mind. It’s in those dark moments that we can find light and hope in the promises of God. We can be fooled by our feelings and impressions, because they often don’t reflect reality. But God’s promises are real, they are sure and in those promises He assures us that He will never leave us alone. When Jacob awoke from his dream, he realized that the Lord was with him in that place, even though he was not aware of it. That’s a good reminder for us that our loving and gracious God is always with us, even if we’re not aware of it.

Whatever shame and fear you’re feeling, give them to God and He will set you free.

Genesis 3:6-8
6 When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God moving about in the orchard at the breezy time of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the orchard.

Immediately after eating fruit from the tree that God had commanded them not to eat, the eyes of Adam and Eve were opened and they knew that they were naked. Although they had always been naked, suddenly it felt wrong and the way that they looked at each other changed, so they made coverings for themselves with some fig leaves. Adam and Eve felt shame and fear because they realized that they had disobeyed God. He had warned them that if they ate the fruit of that tree, then they would die. For the first time they were afraid of being punished, afraid of dying, afraid of God, so they hid from God. When we disobey God, we know that we have damaged our relationship with Him, so we feel shame and fear. We may want to hide from God, but as Adam and Eve discovered, it’s impossible to hide from God because He is everywhere. He knows all things, so we can’t keep our sins secret from Him. Instead of turning away from God, the best and only option we have is to turn to Him and to confess our sins. We can trust Him to forgive us, to take away our shame and fear and to restore our relationship with Him. Because of His great mercy, He will do it.

When we feel down, we can look up and put our hope in God.

Psalm 42:5
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

It’s natural to feel disappointed, discouraged or depressed when our plans fail, we experience loss or we struggle with hardships that come our way and won’t seem to go away. But, as God’s people we don’t have to continue experiencing those negative feelings. Our attitude is greatly affected by what we chose to focus our attention on. If we continue to think about our troubles, our worries and our fears, then it can seem like there’s always a dark cloud hanging over our heads. However, if we turn our thoughts to God and place our hope in Him, then we can realize that we have reason to feel joy, comfort and peace. God is faithful, so why do we feel troubled? We have no reason to doubt Him and every reason to be confident that He will even use our mistakes and difficult times for His good purpose. As we anticipate the challenges that await us today and tomorrow, we can find confidence and strength in knowing that the Almighty God is by our side, that His love and care for us are perfect and complete and that He won’t let anything happen to us that isn’t part of His will and plan for us. When we feel down, we can look up and give Him thanks and praise.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, seek His will and He will guide your steps.

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Making decisions can be very stressful. Because we can’t see into the future, we don’t know for sure how our decision will work out. The Lord sees the future perfectly. He knows all things, so it’s clear to Him which decisions are the best for us to make and He is always ready and able to guide us in every aspect of our lives. But sometimes our understanding and desires don’t match what God wants for us. When that happens we must decide if we will depend on our own limited and flawed understanding or if we will choose to follow God’s perfect wisdom and plan. This means that sometimes we must be willing to let go of our own preferences and ideas and to fully trust that the Lord knows what’s best for us even if we don’t understand what He’s doing. According to human reason and logic, this is a very radical idea. But, for those who know and love the Lord, it’s normal and makes perfect sense. We don’t need to always understand God, but we do need to always trust Him. If we trust Him with our whole heart and seek His will in everything we do, then we can be confident that He will always show us which path to take.

In good times and in bad times, it’s good to draw near to God and to give Him thanks and praise.

Deuteronomy 6:10-12
10 Then when the Lord your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you—a land with large, fine cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn-out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—and you eat your fill, 12 be careful not to forget the Lord who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery.

In times of disasters and other hardships even people who are not active Christians usually remember God. Some of them will pray for the first time in years, others will attend church after not spending a single Sunday morning in worship for decades and many will decide to read the Bible or at least some daily devotions in an effort to get closer to God and to get some help from Him. We might be tempted to be cynical about their sudden interest in God and wonder if it’s really sincere, but God knows their hearts. He is always eager for sinners to turn to Him and to draw closer to Him. The other concern that the Bible warns us about is how we react after God answers our prayers and helps us through the difficult times. When our lives are going smoothly and we’re satisfied it’s easy to enjoy being comfortable, to take for granted the many blessings that we receive from God every day and to forget about God. Moses’ warning to Israel also applies to us, ”When you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord.” He is with us in good times and in bad times and He always deserves our thanks and praise.

God has begun a good work in us and He won’t stop until He completes it.

Philippians 1:6
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

When a potter takes the clay from the ground, he separates it from the rest of the clay and sets it apart for his special purpose. He puts the lump of clay on the wheel, starts the wheel spinning and begins his work. He adds some water, places his hands around the clay and starts to shape it according to the design that he has planned. As the wheel spins, the potter carefully, patiently works the soft material. He is committed to taking as much time as necessary to complete his work. If he stops working, then the clay might dry out and become unworkable, so the potter must continue his work until it is completed. Like a potter works with the clay, so God works with us. He gives us the gift of faith and then begins to lovingly mold and shape us, step by step, day by day, year by year, more and more into His image. He never gives up on us, never tires of His work in us. He works to teach us more about Himself, to strengthen our faith and to draw us closer to Him. We can have peace and joy in knowing that He will faithfully continue His work in us throughout our lives until He finally finishes on the day that Christ Jesus returns.

Lord, let your unfailing love surround us, because our hope is in you alone.

Psalm 33:13, 18, 20-22
13 The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. 18 But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love. 20 We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. 21 In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. 22 Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.

There is no god like the Lord. He reigns over all things and He sees every person in the world at the same time as He looks down from heaven. Not one single person escapes His notice. For those who do evil, His gaze is as a blazing spotlight piercing through the darkness and exposing every wicked thing they do. But for those who fear Him and rely on His unfailing love, His watchful eye is a comfort as that of an attentive and loving father protecting and caring for his children. The Lord’s love for us is perfect and complete, never wavering, never changing, ever steady, ever strong. Because of His boundless love and compassion and His almighty power and authority, we put our hope in Him. In every time of trouble He is our help; in every danger He is our shield. The Lord is all that we require. He sees all our needs and hears all our prayers and never fails to act at exactly the right time. We are absolutely confident that He will rescue us from every peril in this life and will save us for all eternity. And so we trust in His holy name and our hearts rejoice in Him.
