On Aug. 20-23, 2026, the Antiochian Archdiocese, in conjunction with Ancient Faith Ministries, hosted its first vocations retreat, “Do You Want to Be a Priest?” at the Antiochian Village under the leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan Saba.

Eighty-two men attended, representing 58 Antiochian parishes in 26 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. Fifty-four were accompanied by their wives or fiancées, one brought another family member, and six brought babies, bringing the total attendance to 143.

Since the life of the priesthood touches an entire household, the retreat welcomed the wives and fiancées of participants as full sharers in the experience.

Participants and presenters explored the role of the priesthood in an atmosphere of love, candor, and earnestness, with frank discussion of both the particular joys and sorrows of the life of a priest and his family: How do a priest and his family deal with loneliness? Financial stresses? Parish conflict? Relocation away from family and friends? Stresses on children? Burnout?

Extended Q&A sessions often lasted into the night, with many lingering for conversation with presenters and each other long after sessions were completed.

The weekend culminated in the celebration of the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning, led by Metropolitan Saba and concelebrating clergy, bringing the retreat's conversations about calling and service to their central purpose: the worship of Christ in the life of the Church.

**انطلاق أعمال اليوم الأول من مخيم حركة الشبيبة الأرثوذكسية في "القرية الإنطاكية" ببنسلفانيا

ببركة وحضور سيادة المطران سابا اسبر، راعي أبرشيّة نيويورك واميركا الشمالية، في الكنيسة الأنطاكية الأرثوذكسية، افتُتحت أعمال اليوم الأول من مخيم حركة الشبيبة الأرثوذكسية، والذي ضمّ مجموعة من الحركيين في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وكندا، وذلك في مقر "القرية الإنطاكية" (Antiochian Village) بولاية بنسلفانيا.
شهدت صبيحة يوم السبت — بعد التزام الإخوة باللقاء والتجمع يوم الجمعة — جلسة حوارية افتراضية عبر تطبيق "زوم" مع الأمين العام لحركة الشبيبة الأرثوذكسية، الأخ إيلي كبة. وتطرق الأمين العام في حديثه إلى أبرز "الثوابت الحركية" التي تبقى راسخة عبر الزمن ورغم اتساع الرقعة الجغرافية واختلاف البيئات. وجاء في مقدمة هذه المحاور:
الهوية والأخوة: أن نأتي جميعًا من المسيح ونحيا معًا فيه تعزيزًا للتواصل الحركي الأصيل.
استثمار المواهب: أهمية اكتشاف المواهب الفردية وتوظيفها لإنتاج كل ما هو خير وصالح للآخرين.
الانفتاح الحركي: التركيز على الإطلالات والأنشطة الحركية الموجهة نحو المجتمع والآخر.
وعقب إقامة صلاة الغروب، التقى المشاركون بسيادة المطران سابا اسبر في لقاء تأمل انجيلي، تناول فيه سيادته نص "السامرية" من إنجيل القديس يوحنا. وأشار المطران اسبر إلى الخصوصية الإيمانية والعمق الذي يتميز به إنجيل يوحنا، حيث يرتقي بالمؤمن من الانشغال بالأمور المادية والملموسة إلى ما هو أسمى وأعمق، وصولًا إلى المعرفة الحقيقية بالمسيح.
اختُتمت فعاليات اليوم الأول في أجواء من الفرح والأخوة، حيث أقام المشاركون سهرة ترفيهية تخللتها الألعاب الجماعية والأغاني التراثية والحركية.

Launch of the First Day Activities of the Orthodox Youth Movement Camp at the "Antiochian Village" in Pennsylvania

With the blessing and presence of His Eminence Metropolitan Saba Esper, Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of New York and All North America for the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, the activities of the first day of the Orthodox Youth Movement camp were inaugurated. The camp brought together a group of movement members from the United States and Canada at the "Antiochian Village" in Pennsylvania.
On Saturday morning—following the arrival and gathering of the members on Friday—a virtual dialogue session took place via the Zoom app with the Secretary General of the Orthodox Youth Movement, Elie Kebbe. In his address, the Secretary General touched upon the most prominent "movement fundamentals" that remain steadfast over time, despite geographic expansion and differing environments. Key topics included:
• Identity and Brotherhood: Coming together from Christ and living together in Him to enhance genuine movement connections.
• Investing Talents: The importance of discovering individual talents and utilizing them to produce all that is good and beneficial for others.
• Movement Openness: Focusing on outreach and movement activities directed toward society and the other.
Following the Vespers service, participants met with His Eminence Metropolitan Saba Esper for a Gospel meditation session, where His Eminence addressed the text of the "Samaritan Woman" from the Gospel of St. John. Metropolitan Esper pointed out the spiritual distinctiveness and depth characteristic of John's Gospel, which elevates the believer from preoccupation with material and tangible matters to that which is higher and deeper, leading to true knowledge of Christ.
The first day's activities concluded in an atmosphere of joy and brotherhood, where participants hosted an evening social gathering featuring group games, as well as traditional and movement songs.

"ثمّة قدّيس متوارٍ في "إيغاليو" (بالقرب من أثينا) هو الأب إفمينيوس. هو القدّيس وليس أنا".
" لقد وجدتم الشيخ الألطف. إنه الشيخ الأكثر اتضاعًا، الذي لدينا اليوم في العالم الأرثوذكسيّ. لقد تقدّس منذ أن كان ولدًا - وذلك بألمه وخدماته".
" لقد شُفي الأب إفمينيوس بواسطة إيمانه. إنّه قديسُ زماننا المتواري".

Men who, God willing, will become pastors in our churches in the future gathered at Antiochian Village Conference and Retreat Center from Aug. 17-19 for the annual retreat for Archdiocesan seminarians. His Eminence Metropolitan Saba presided, joined by His Grace Bishop Thomas.

Returning second- and third-year students were joined by 16 incoming residential seminarians who will begin studies this fall at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. The retreat opened with a supplication service to St. Raphael of Brooklyn.

His Eminence served as this year’s retreat speaker, leading two sessions on Tuesday. In the first, His Eminence asked the seminarians to consider what it truly means to study theology. Drawing on the teaching of St. Silouan the Athonite, he emphasized the essential distinction between knowing about God and knowing God.

For the second session, Sayidna Saba led a wide-ranging discussion beginning with readings from the Holy Fathers and contemporary spiritual teachers. The format was new to this year’s retreat and was warmly received by the seminarians. Rather than simply hearing about the spiritual teachings of the Church, they were invited by His Eminence to struggle together with how those teachings are lived and applied in the Christian life.

“It was an incredible blessing to spend so much time with Sayidna Saba, and to dialogue with my brother seminarians about the spiritual life,” said incoming seminarian Jacob Seagraves. “I feel as though I received a solid impression of the heart of our Archdiocese, and I am excited for the coming year.” Jacob will study at St. Vladimir's Seminary.

The retreat concluded Wednesday morning with Orthros and Hierarchal Divine Liturgy. Before departing Antiochian Village, the seminarians also received their parish assignments for the coming academic year, where they will increase their formation by learning from seasoned pastors and assisting in those communities.

May God strengthen and guide all of our seminarians as they begin another year of formation and service to His Church.

لمحةٌ شديدة الإيجاز
وُلد القدّيس في 1 ك2 1931 لعائلة فقيرة في جزيرة كريت. اسمه في المعمودية "قسطنطين". في الرابعة عشرة من عمره، وبينما كان يجلس مع أختَيه وأمّه بالقرب من النار ، ظهر بغتة نورٌ برّاق ونفذَ الى كيانه، وملأه فرحًا إلهيًّا، وألهمه أن يقول لعائلته: "سوف أصير راهبًا". وعندما بلغ السّابعة عشرة من عمره، التحق بدير القديس نيقيطا. و في العام 1951 رُسم راهبًا باسم "صفرونيوس".
التحق بالخدمة العسكرية في العام 1954، وأصيب بحُمّى مستمرة خلال تلك الفترة، وبدأت علامات البرص تظهر عليه. يقول: "شعرتُ وكأنّ أحدهم غرس مشطًا حديديًّا في ظهري، وكان يدحرجه على جلدي". "آه، أيتها الفائقة القداسة، ما هو هذا الألم؟ لم أشعر بألم مماثل من قبل في حياتي". بعد اختباراتٍ وفحص، قال له الطبيب: "يجب أن تخضع للحَجْر حالاً. سيأخذك الشرطيُّ إلى مستشفى في أثينا لأنك مصابٌ بالبرص". فحالما سمع الخبر السّيئ سأل الطّبيب: "هل أنت جادّ؟ ألديَّ برصٌ؟ أسوفَ أحمل هذا الصّليب الرهيب؟" فأجابه الطبيب: "نعم". وإذ تقبّل هول هذه التجربة، اعتبرها، في الوقت نفسه، بمثابة تعويض يقدّمه الرّبُّ لخدّامه المؤمنين. ناظرًا الى هذا الصّليب العظيم الذي سيُتْحده، بالكليّة، بقيامة المسيح المجيدة، ارتمى الشاب البالغ من العمر 25 سنة على السرير وهو يضحك بفرح...

أعلنت البطريركية المسكونية قداسته في العام 2022. بدأ تدوينُ سيرته بالاستناد الى عظات المطران نيوفيطس (مورفو، قبرص)، المسجّلة. يقول الكاتب: "شعرت بوجوب إخراجِ قداسة هذه الجوهرة المعاصرة المخبّأة إلى النور. إنّ محبّة هذا القدّيس، وحنانه وتضحيته وتواضعه وروح فكاهته وصلاحه المتّقد بصفته كاهنًا - راهبًا يعيش في العالم، تخاطبنا بوضوح، في هذا القرن الحادي والعشرين: كيف صلّى، كيف آزرَ المبتّلين، كيف خدم الآخرين من دون كلل، كيف ضحك، وكيف تمتّع بمثلج الليموناضة. لقد شعر الكثيرون بمحبّته وعاطفته الرعائيّة اللتين لا حدود لهما.

“At thy deathless Dormition, O Theotokos, Mother of Life, clouds caught the Apostles high into the air; and although dispersed throughout the world, they were brought to stand in one choir before thine immaculate body.” – From the doxasticon in Orthros

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, His Eminence Metropolitan Saba celebrated the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy for the great feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos at Ss. Peter and Paul Church at the Antiochian Village Conference and Retreat Center.

As the aforementioned hymn explains, the Orthodox Church teaches that the Virgin Mary’s falling asleep was not unto death. The apostles, who had been preaching the gospel around the world, gathered in Gethsemane to bury their Mother. After her burial, they reopened her tomb only to find it empty. Mary’s body and soul were taken to heaven where she reunited with her Son and our God, Jesus Christ.

Teens and volunteers from across the Archdiocese spent the week of Aug. 10-14, 2026 serving as Teen SOYO Coaches for the 45th annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Multi-Sport Training Camp at Antiochian Village. The event is fully sponsored annually by NAC Teen SOYO through the generosity of parishes across the Archdiocese.

This year, 35 Teen SOYO coaches and 15 adult volunteers joined Special Olympics coaches from across Pennsylvania to provide a week of joy and sports for 125 Special Olympics athletes. From bocce to bowling, and flag football to soccer, athletes trained daily in their competition sports with the guidance and support of our teens and their local coaches.

The camp was blessed to have a visit from His Eminence Metropolitan Saba. On the night of Aug. 14, His Eminence presided at Great Vespers with Litia-Artoklasia for the Feast of the Dormition at St. Ignatius Church.

Among the special moments shared, Metropolitan Saba met a globally recognized Special Olympics athlete, Loretta Claiborne, who has attended every Sports Camp since it originated 45 years ago. She even celebrated her 73rd birthday at camp this week!

"إنَّ القَبْرَ والمَوْتَ لَمْ يَضْبِطا والِدَةَ الإله، غَيْرَ السَّاهِيةِ في الشَّفاعات، والرَّجاءَ غَيْرَ المَرْدودِ في الإعانَات. لأنَّهُ بما أنَّها أُمُّ الحَياة، نَقَلَها إلى الحَياةِ الَّذي حَلَّ في حَشَاها الدَّائِمِ البَتوليَّة."

يأتي عيد التجلّي، في الدورة الليتورجيّة السنويّة، قبل عيد الصليب بأربعين يوماً، مُظهِراً الترابط القائم بين مجد المسيح والصليب. وتكشف لفظة "خروج" أنّ آلام المسيح تحقيقٌ لفصح العهد القديم، والخروج الحقّ من العبودية إلى الخلاص.
كذلك يؤكّد انكشاف هذا المجد الإلهي على أنّ موت المسيح الآتي قريباً، ليس أمراً مفروضاً عليه من قوى خارجيّة، بل كان تقدمةَ حبٍّ مجانيّة. لأنّ ما من جندي كان بإمكانه أن يقاوم هكذا مجد، عند القبض على يسوع، لو لم يبقَ المسيح صامتاً (مت26/53). نرتّل في قنداق العيد "وحسبما وسع تلاميذك شاهدوا مجدك، حتّى عندما يعاينونك مصلوباً، يفطنون أنّ آلامك طوعاً باختيارك".
يسبق رواية حَدَث التجلّي كلام الربّ عن آلامه القريبة للتلاميذ، وعن قيمة إهلاك النفس من أجل خلاصها. تبدأ الرواية هكذا: "وبعد هذا الكلام". وفي هذا دلالة على ارتباط الصليب بالقيامة. فيكون حَدَث التجلّي كشفاً مسبقاً لمجد المسيح، لكي يقوّي التلاميذ، الذين رأوه، ويثبّت إيمانهم بمعلّمهم ومسيحانيّته. يروي الإنجيل أنّ الربّ أخذ هامَات تلاميذه، وهم بطرس ويعقوب ويوحنا، ليروا مجده هذا.
تقول طروبارية العيد: "لمّا تجلّيت أيها المسيح الإله على الجبل، أظهرتَ مجدك للتلاميذ حسبما استطاعوا". وتؤكّد بدورها على أنّ التلاميذ رأوا بقدر ما كان باستطاعتهم أن يروا. فالروح القدس ما كان قد حلّ عليهم بعد.

توقير المؤمنين لوالدة الإله، ومكانتها في وجدان الكنيسة وعقيدتها، جعلت الصوم قبل عيدها (15 آب) صوماً شعبياً تمارسه الشريحة العظمى من المؤمنين، وكون والدة الإله نموذج البتولية والعفة، ساهم في امتناع المؤمنين بالممارسة عن إقامة حفلات زواجهم في فترة الصوم.
إقامة الباراكليسي يومياً طوال أسبوعي الصوم تبقي ذهن المؤمن مستيقظاً ومستعداً بقلب نقي للاحتفال بعيد (رقاد) والدة الإله، بعيداً عن صخب ومغريات العالم ، صلاة الباراكليسي تمنح بركات وفوائد روحية ونفسية عميقة لكل مَن يواظب على حضورها وقراءتها
