سوزان، سيدة في الثالثة والأربعين من عمرها، أم لطفلين، أكبرهما غيث البالغ سبع سنوات، من ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة. تعيش العائلة في منزل متواضع في منطقة كشكول. زوجها متقاعد وهي تعمل في تحضير الطعام وبيعه عند الطلب، لتساعد زوجها في تغطية مصاريف المنزل، حيث تبحث دائماً عن أية فرصة يمكن أن تساعده على التطور. تعرّفت على كاريتاس سورية عبر مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي وما إن سمعت بفتح باب التسجيل للأطفال من ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة حتى سارعت بتسجيل غيث وقالت:
"ابني بحاجة كتير يتعلّم وأنا ما قدرتي حطه بمراكز مدفوعة. ما توقّعت يستجيب ويتحسن بهي السرعة."
وأضافت:
"ابني ما كان يحكي ولا حرف. بعد ما سجّل هون صار يقول بابا وماما، عطيني، روحي. صار يعدّ الأرقام ويحكي كتير كلمات، طار عقلي."
تابعت حديثها عن مشاركتها في جلسات الأهالي المخصصة لزيادة وعيهم حول آليات التعامل مع أطفالهم ووصفت التغيير الذي لمسته قائلة:
"بعد ما شاركت بجلسات الأهالي، صرت إعمل مع غيث نشاطات وصار عندي أساليب جديدة ما كنت أعرفها، حتّى إني ما كنت أعرف إتعامل معه، يعصّب ويبكي وما أعرف شو بده. إيام كتير كنت إقعد إبكي من قهري إني ما عم أعرف إتعامل معه".
وأردفت:
"أمّا اليوم وبفضل كاريتاس سورية صرت إفهم طلباته. ما عاد يحتاج يضوج ويعصّب، حتّى قدراته الجسدية تطورت، صار يعرف يمسك المقص ويحمل الطابة ويركّب مكعّبات ويمسك قلمه. ما تمنيت للحظة يخلص تسجيل غيث، لأنه يلي عم يغيروه بابني، عم يغيّر حياتنا بالبيت، عم يعطوهن اهتمام كتير، عم يعاملوهن متل ولادهن وإخواتهن."
لم تقتصر تجربة سوزان على دور الأم فقط، بل تطوّعت للعمل في طهو الطعام للأطفال داخل المركز. وهي تجربة تركت أثراً كبيراً في نفسها.
"كنت عايشة جوا البيت ما بعرف شي برّا. حتى أنا حسيت إنه عشت من جديد. الشغل والأجواء هون حسستني بالحياة."
وتابعت:
"استفدت من هي التجربة بإني تعلّمت كتير شغلات ما كنت أعرفها وكنت إفرح من كل قلبي وقت شوف الولاد عم يفرحوا بهالأكل يلي يمكن ما عم يشوفوه ببيوتهن، حتّى نحن بالبيت محرومين من هالأكلات، اللحمة غالية كتير."
كما أكّدت على أهمية الوجبات اليومية المقدّمة للأطفال:
"بهاد الأكل عم يأمنوا غذاء صحي لهالأطفال وكل الأهل عم يفرحوا وقت يشوفوا ولادهن عم ياكلو شي محرومين منه بالبيت."
أما الدخل الذي حصلت عليه من هذا العمل، فكان له أثر مباشر على حياتها اليومية:
"الراتب يلي أخدته من هاد الشغل ساعدني باحتياجات بيتي وخصوصي بحفاضات ابني. كنت إشتريهن بالتقسيط وقت يكون معي، بجيب."
وعن أكثر ما أسعدها عند حصولها على الراتب، قالت بصوت مرتجف والدموع تنهمر من عينيها:
"أكتر شي فرّحني إني بعد زمان ما جبت لولادي أواعي. الحمد لله إني قبضت. ما كان في غرض بالبيت وكنت ناوية إتديّن لإدفع كهربا."
وأضافت:
"وقت شافوا ولادي الغراض طار عقلهن. ابني مسك تيابو حضنهن ونام وهو غامرهن. كانوا ولادي محرومين من الغدا بالبيت. صدقاً حتى فواكه على البيت ما كنت إقدر جيب. وقتها جبت كل شي عم نشتهيه من زمان."
واختتمت سوزان حديثها بامتنان كبير:
"الله يعطيكم ألف عافية. ما شفنا إلّا الخير منهن، كاريتاس سورية عطيتنا شي ما حدا عطانا ياه".
Souzan, 43-year-old mother of two, eldest, Ghaith is seven-year-old, with special needs. She lives in modest home in Kashkoul Area. Her husband is retired. She works preparing and selling food on demand, to help covering household expenses. She always looks for any opportunity that can help Ghaith develop. She learned about Caritas Syria through social media. As soon as she heard about opening registration for Children with Special Needs, she rushed to register Ghaith. She said:
“My Son really needs to learn and I cannot afford to put him in paid Centers. I did not expect him to respond and improve so quickly.”
She added:
“My Son could not speak a word. After he registered here, he started saying: Dad, Mom, give me, Go. He started counting numbers and saying many words. I was amazed!”
She continued talking about her participation in Parenting Sessions designed to raise awareness about how to deal with their Children, describing change she noticed:
“After participating in Parenting Sessions, I started attending activities with Ghaith and learned new methods I did not know before. I did not even know how to deal with him. He would get angry and cry and I would not know what he wanted. Many days I would sit and cry from frustration, because I did not know how to deal with.”
She added:
“But today, thanks to Caritas Syria, I understand his needs. He no longer needs to get upset or angry. Even his physical abilities improved: now he knows how to hold scissors, his pen, carry a ball and build with blocks. I did not want for moment Ghaith’s registration to end, because what they change in my Son, changes our lives at home. They give them so much attention and treat them like their own Children and Siblings.”
Souzan’s experience was not limited to being Mother, she also volunteered to cook for Children at the Center. It was an experience that left great impact on her.
“I was living inside my house, unaware of anything outside. I even felt like I was reborn. Work and atmosphere here made me feel alive.”
She continued:
“I benefited from this experience by learning many things I did not know before. I was very happy when I saw Children enjoying this food, which they might not see at home. Even we at home are deprived of these dishes; meat is so expensive.”
She also emphasized importance of daily meals provided to children:
“These meals provide healthy food for Children. All Parents are happy when they see their Children eat something they are deprived of at home.”
As for income she earned from this work, it had direct impact on her daily life:
“Salary I received from this job, helped me with my household needs, especially for my son’s diapers. I used to buy them on credit when I had some money.”
Regarding what made her happiest upon receiving her salary, she said with trembling voice and tears streaming down her face:
“What made me happiest was that after long time, I brcame able to buy clothes for my Children. Thank God I got paid. There was nothing at home and I was planning to borrow money to pay electricity bill.”
She added:
“When my Children saw new clothes, they were overjoyed. My Son held his clothes, hugged them and fell asleep gripping them. My Children were deprived of food at home. Honestly, I could not even afford to bring fruit. That day, I got everything we had been craving for so long.”
Souzan concluded her speech with great gratitude:
“May God reward you thousand times over. We have seen nothing but kindness from you. Caritas Syria gave us something no one else ever did.”
