144,000 AND THEIR FATHER’S NAME

We first read about the 144,000 in the seventh chapter of Revelation. Now we have a few more details. The Lamb of God is seen in Revelation 14 and with Him are the 144,000. They have the Father’s NAME in their forehead. In verse 4 we read that these are NOT DEFILED with women. They follow the Lamb wherever He goes. They sing a NEW SONG before the throne. They are FIRSTFRUITS. They are REDEEMED. Amen!

First we need to examine WHAT the significance of the Father’s name is. Is it some new pronunciation of Yahweh? No, it isn’t that at all. Let’s allow the Bible to tell us about the Father’s name. Moses specifically asked God if he could see His face. God had to deny that request because Moses would die. Sin cannot abide in God’s presence. God is so pure, so holy that His glory, like a consuming fire, would devour sin, even when it is in us. God wants to remove our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God did tell Moses that He would place him in a cleft of the rock and walk by, veiling His glory, but removing the shield so Moses could get a glimpse his back. The song, Rock of Ages, is based on this experience. Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee! Amen! Moses’ face was so bright from the glory of this encounter that he had to veil it so he could be among his people. We can read the dialogue in Exodus 33:20-23.

The amazing thing about this story is that God said He knew Moses by NAME. So in Exodus 33:19 God says He will proclaim HIS NAME before Moses. His name? Yes, His name. That’s exactly what He did. First He gave Moses the two tables of stones with ten commandments. This is part of the answer to Moses’ request. God’s law is His character. God descended in a cloud and stood with Moses on the mount. There He proclaimed His name. And this is what we are told:

“The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abudant in goodness and truth. Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no wise clear the guilty….” This is God's NAME, His very character. There is more, it is called JUSTICE. The guilty pass on sin’s results to the third and fourth generation. God then made a covenant with Israel to intervene with this cycle. He asks them to worship no other gods, nor let their sons and daughters intermarry with the heathen. They were to have no images. He goes over the feast of unleavened bread and the redemption of the firstborn. He speaks of the Sabbath, to rest from labor, even during the harvest. He speaks of the Feast of Weeks, harvest ingathering, how to offer sacrices, how to celebrate passover and firstfruits. All these things were a part of the covenant God made with Israel.

As we look closer at what God proclaimed about His name, we see it is HOLY. He asks us, in His laws, not to use it in vain. He desires the acknowledgement of His creation that HE IS OUR GOD AND CREATOR. This is important. Idols are dumb innate objects that can neither move or speak. They cannot do anything, let alone create something out of nothing. This represents the work of man’s hands. And the pagan worshipped the CREATION rather than the CREATOR. God has set aside a special day that we can honor Him and spend special time with Him. It is the seventh day of the week, a day He set aside as He rested from CREATING. That is the ONLY day God blessed and sanctified and asked us to observe. We are not to do our own pleasure on His holy day. We worship Him. We praise Him, we speak to one another about His blessings. We pray to Him. We encourage each other to be faithful. In a special way, as we remember His power to CREATE, we realize the Sabbath is a special sign between us and God that He can recreate our hearts, He can change our thoughts, He can give us a desire to be good, noble, and true.

And God wants us to be like Him. He is merciful and gracious. He is longsuffering and patient. He is abundant in goodness and truth. He forgives and shows mercy. These are characteristics of God’s mind, His heart. He wants all these attributes to be in us. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”, Paul admonishes us.

The 144,000 are undefiled. What does it mean to be undefiled by women? Virgins? Are just men saved? No, remember a woman in Bible prophecy represents a church. God wants His people to come out of the false churches of Babylon, to be undefiled by their false doctrines. Babylon is fallen and will be punished. If you are still in it, you will be punished as well. Spiritually pure means you are anchored on God’s Word and have no part in error. Firstfruits means the 144,000 are a promise of the HARVEST TO COME. They are the early bloomers, those who have overcome through the blood of the Lamb. That’s why they follow the Lamb wherever He leads. If God says to do it, they do it. It is not in their own strength. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit working in them. And what is this NEW SONG? Well, later we are told it is the song of Moses. That was what Israel sang as they were delivered from Egypt. The Red Sea collapsed back on the Egyptian armies. It’s a song of VICTORY. These people are OVERCOMERS. They are sealed because they are COMPLETE IN HIM AND VICTORIOUS! They are victorious over sin and the devil! Hallelujah! These people are God’s witnesses that what He has asked us to do, He is able to help us perform. They vindicate God before the universe! God’s character has been impugned by the devil and the fallen angels. Satan has made accusations that must be answered. Is God’s law impossible to keep? No! He is able to keep us from falling as He presents us faultless. By having the Father’s name in THEIR foreheads, the 144,000 demonstrate true righteousness. They reflect His character. It is a part of them! They are representatives of God’s kingdom and will be able to travel as ambassadors all over the universe, sharing their experiences to all God’s creation.

They are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb!

THE BEAST FROM THE SEA

As we read Revelation 13, we see a different beast, but it has ten horns and seven heads, just like the dragon, and no wonder, verse 2 tells us the dragon gave this beast his power, his seat, and great authority. In other words, this beast is controlled by Satan! As we said in the last post, Daniel 7 tells us about a terrible beast that would come after the nation of Greece, persecuting God’s people. This was the empire of pagan ROME! It had great iron teeth and iron claws, stamping and destroying everything in its sight. In 70 A.D. the Roman empire completely destroyed Jerusalem. (The only thing remaining is the “Western” or “Wailing” wall. Archaeologists have uncovered many things in this area today, and the rubble contains many artifacts.) When Rome fell it was divided into ten sections, but as the pope took over the very seat of the Caesars, three kingdoms that were opposed to their belief system were destroyed. We see the beasts once described in the book of Daniel to represent Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece, the lion, bear, and leopard, make up this new beast in a composite form, showing us the errors of the past are perpetrated in this new creature that rose out of the ashes of the Roman Empire and calls itself the Roman Catholic “church”. (We do not like to even call it a church.)

Prominent among the characteristics of this beast from the sea is its BLASPHEMY. Verse 2 tells us the word, blasphemy, is on its head. When we read of a harlot later in this book, we see she has the NAME, Babylon, the great w***e. These are one and the same, just told in a different way. We saw that same type of exegesis in the book of Daniel. God uses various symbols to show aspects of the same thought. These are not different entities. We can tell that because they do the same action. Often we even see the same time period of 1260 or 42 months applied.

John saw this beast receive a deadly wound in verse 3, but that wound was healed. In 1798, during the French Revolution, Napoleon’s general Berthier took the pope prisoner and he died in exile. No, this false church didn’t die, but it certainly was wounded. Its property and holdings were taken by Napoleon, cathedrals were occupied by the state and the priests were executed. When Mussolini returned the land back to the Vatican in 1929, the newspapers proclaimed “Deadly Wound Healed”! The church was even given recompense for damages. We have seen a lot of changes. Once people doubted John F. Kennedy would be elected president of the United States because he was Catholic. But today almost all the Supreme Court and our judiciary is Catholic. The CI A is run by Jesuits and Jesuits occupy high positions in our government, in legislative, judicial, and educational systems. The current president is Catholic and vowed to work with Rome when he came into office.

And don’t miss the last part of verse 3, “all the world wondered after the beast”. We see this going on today, but certainly the charismatic Pope John Paul II started it. The relationship he had with U.S. President Ronald Reagan resulted in the fall of the Berlin wall and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Reagan also appointed a U.N. Ambassador to represent the Vatican, something unheard of from a church. But this church is committing adultery with the kings of the earth, it is not a good healthy relationship and the Vatican has tried to influence the U.S. and other world countries to passing laws in their favor. If you understand history, you know that is the reason for mass migrations from Europe in the 1700’s. The Dark Ages was a time when the Vatican held unpresedented sway over kings and nations and the armies were used to punish dissent. Pope Benedict, who has recently died, once wrote that the U.S. needed to make laws “with teeth”. That is exactly what Bible prophecy portrays in the next section of this chapter. But let’s finish with this beast from the sea, first.

As people worship this beast, and verse 4 uses this word “worship” twice, we see they are in reality, worshipping Satan. They see the power of the Vatican and realize there is none like it. It is now recognized as a world authority on religion and Christ’s true church. But is that true? No, as we continue, we see he has a mouth that speaks great things and blasphemies. Worship and blasphemy are words with religious connotations. Notice the beast had power to rule 42 months. This is the time of the Roman papacy, also called the Dark Ages, 538-1798. It is the same time period of time, times, half a time, or a thousand, two hundred, and three-score days, Revelation 11:3; 12:6. They were given time to make war with the saints and also received power over nations, kindreds, and tongues. We see this power blasphemies God, His name, and His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven, Revelation 13:6. How does it do that?

Blasphemy against God is calling yourself God and claiming the ability to forgive sins. We see this even today as newscasters gush over the pope. One even said, as the pope’s jet took off, “Now we can truly say, Our Father which art in heaven.” When Pope Francis appeared before Congress, the speaker of the house actually wept. People kiss the pope’s ring and bow before him. Government officials wear black in his presence, even the women, while he wears white, as Christ. The priests daily listen to confessions of sins. The Jewish leaders once tried to stone Jesus because He told a man his sins were forgiven. (But Jesus IS God.) God’s NAME is His character, according to Exodus 34. When a church claims to represent God and yet has been responsibile for the death of millions of martyrs, we wonder what is Christ-like about that? They blaspheme the tabernacle in heaven because there Christ works as our great High Priest, to intercede for His people. They have a false priesthood that focuses on earthly priests. They set up dead people as saints, even Mary is exalted as a Co-Redeemer to pray to. Thus they blaspheme all those who dwell in heaven and work with Jesus in His ministry.

In verse 8 we are told that all who dwell on earth, whose names are NOT written in the book of life, will WORSHIP according to this beast’s dictates. If you have a ear, listen. This final issue is about WORSHIP. We are told that six times in this section of Revelation. We are told that those who lead into captivity, will be captive. Berthier fulfilled this prophecy. Those who killed with the sword were also killed during the French Revolution. It does take patience and faith to trust in the Lord when we see a church with so much power and influence AND ERROR!

We are going to digress a little and explain more about the Dark Ages and the times of persecution for God’s church before we proceed with part 2 of Revelation 13. Part two will begin with verse 11, the beast from the earth. God will give us a lot of details as we see false christs, false miracles, and mighty wonders from this false system. It is a false church, but it is also a state. We will see an image, an exact likeness developed in the last days in the United States.

One postscript: the sea represents a populated area, Revelation 17:15. The earth, which helped the woman in Revelation 12, represents the opposite, a wilderness sparsley settled.

A GREAT WONDER

Heaven is amazed at God’s church. The Song of Solomon is more than a love story, it is the story of Christ’s love for His people. Look at SS 6:10:

“Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?”

It is beautiful to see the harmony of the Scriptures and how John was told to weave this story into this “revealing” of Christ’s plan for His people. We see a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and her head crowned with twelve stars. This isn’t Mary, as a certain organization likes to tell you. (Though she is the mother of Jesus.) Revelation is a symbolic book and this beautiful symbolism fits in with the prophecy of Jeremiah 6:12, where God compares the daughter of Zion, or His people, to a comely and delicate woman. Jesus used the same symbolism in John 14, when He used the idea of a Jewish wedding to describe His plans. “I go to prepare a place for you…then I will come back and receive you to myself.” When a couple were betrothed in Bible times, the groom would go to prepare a home for his bride, then come back with all his friends for a celebration of the marriage. We read the story of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 and see it even again.

John saw how Christ was given as the supreme act of sacrifice by the Godhead to the church, verse 2. But the devil sought to destroy Christ from His birth through King Herod. The red dragon has seven heads, but ten horns, and seven crowns on those heads. We have heard this creature described in Daniel 7:7-8, 19-20. This was God’s way to describe the power of pagan Rome.

John saw Satan being cast out of heaven in verses 7-8. Here on earth, the devil delights in persecuting God’s people. Note that the woman fled to the wilderness for 1260 days. This is the same time period from Daniel 7:25, time, times, and the dividing of times. In the Bible “time” represents a year, as we see in Daniel 4:16, when Nebuchadnezzar went crazy for 7 years. Times would be two years, and half a time would be 6 months. Bible months have 30 days. 360 + 720 + 180 = 1260. In Bible prophecy days represent years, Numbers 14:34. We thus see 1260 years when God’s people, the New Testament church, would be repressed.

History confirms that the Waldensians were among the first to flee, having been given the pure Word from the disciples.
They fled to the Alps of Italy, where they found a home in the wilderness. There they were persecuted and hunted down by a false system that calls itself the mother church. Then we had the early church at Jerusalem FLEE as Titus and his armies of Rome surrounded the city in 70 A.D. Revelation 12:13 tells us the devil persecuted God’s true church. The devil does this through armies and false churches. Verse 15 says a flood of persecution came upon God’s people. During the Dark Ages, a false church persecuted people for simply owning a Bible. Millions died after being tied to a stake with a fire lit under their feet. Some died in dungeons from cruel torture. You can go to Rome and see many of these demonic instruments designed to inflict pain with a slow death. Some are even in the Vatican Museum. The judgement will sit and one day this organization will be no more, according to Daniel 7.

Thankfully the earth helped the woman. We will read more about the beast that comes up out of the earth in the next chapter. God had prepared a wilderness country, the United States, where a Constitution was developed to offer freedom and a refuge to the oppressed. Revelation 13 will reveal more about the United States.

We see in Revelation 12:17 that the remnant will keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ, which is the prophetic gift, (Revelation 19:10) among them. Where there is no vision, the people perish.

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET

We first read in Revelation 10 that the seventh trumpet was beginning to sound. In Revelation 11:15, we come to the conclusion of the last trumpet. As the angel sounds that mighty trumpet, not only are there GREAT VOICES in heaven, but we see the temple of God opened, with lightnings, thunderings, and earthquake and great HAIL. We see some amazing things because this is the CONCLUSION of time. THIS IS THE END!

There is a universal announcement: “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever.” Truly Handel was inspired when he wrote the majestic Hallelujah Chorus to go along with this text. We can hear the angels and indeed, the whole universe, swell with joy as they sing this chorus! The 24 elders are struck with awe and fall down on their faces to worship God, saying, “We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned.”

All earthly kingdoms will come to an end. And the effect of that is expressed in ANGER, verse 18. They see the wrath of the Lamb has come. It is the time of the dead, the righteous dead will be raised, the wicked dead will remain in their graves to be judged during the millennium. The prophets will be rewarded. The saints will get their rewards. Those that fear the name of the Lord, both great and small, will receive gracious rewards and we will be amazed. Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, what the Lord has prepared for those who love Him. God will destroy those who would destroy the world. We think of disease and bio labs, weather manipulation, and cruel wars designed by sick men who crave power. Yes, there will be thunderings and lightnings. There will be voices from heaven, and there will be a mighty earthquake when the Lord rises to shake mightily the earth and make things RIGHT. The apostle Peter said the end of the world would culminate with the melting of the elements. The earth will be on fire. Cities will be destroyed by the hail. The living wicked will be slain by the brightness of Christ’s coming.

This corresponds to the prophecy of Jeremiah 4:23-27. The prophet saw the earth, with the mountains trembling. The cities were broke down by the presence of the Lord and his fierce anger. The land was made desolate, but there will not be a FULL END.

Let’s look at Revelation 16:18. As the seventh angel pours out the seventh plague we hear a voice from the temple in heaven saying IT IS DONE. “And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings, and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great.” This brings on the END of the world and it sounds exactly the same as Revelation 11:19, because it is the same thing. We must realize that these prophecies REPEAT AND ENLARGE. This section has ended, but there are details to come.

As we come to Revelation 12 we are actually going back in time to the fall of Lucifer and the history of God’s church. Then in Revelation 13 we have more details added. Hang on.

TWO WITNESSES, TWO OLIVE TREES

We come to a very important part of Revelation 11. Much has been written about the two witnesses. We have to realize that the book of Revelation is written in SYMBOLISM. These two witnesses were given power by God to prophecy. They would be clothed in sackcloth for 1260 days (years in Bible prophecy). During that time no one could hurt them or fire would devour the enemies of God. They had power to shut heaven so it wouldn’t rain. They had power to turn water to blood, and power to pull down plagues from heaven. We are talking about the POWER OF GOD’S WORD! This isn’t two old men in brown robes lying dead in the street, this is God’s WORD being burned in the street.

But let’s go back to the two olive trees. We know from previous Bible studies that olive oil fueled the menorrah in the Holy Place of the Lord’s earthly sanctuary. In the book of Zechariah, we were shown two olive trees with pipes that fueled a golden lamp, with seven branches. This is like the menorrah in the Temple. Zechariah didn’t know what it all meant. God wanted the prophet to encourage Zerubbabel, who was rebuilding the Temple after the Babylonian captivity. God wanted them to understand that power and strength would never accomplish the work. It was like a great mountain. It would become leveled out by God’s grace. The power would come by the Holy Spirit. Thus olive oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It was used to anoint prophet, priests, and kings, showing that God would direct their paths. “Thy Word is a Lamp unto my feet and a Light unto my path.” There is living POWER in the Word of God. It can change lives! Amen! The two witnesses are the OLD and the NEW Testaments. A TESTAMENT is a testimony! Your last will and testament is your directive for your affairs after your death. In the same way the WORD is God’s directive for our affairs, but while we are ALIVE.

Let’s go back and look at the WORD. The prophecies in the Bible are ordained by God. They stand firm, they do not lie. When God told Elijah to tell Ahab it wasn’t going to rain for 3 1/2 years, it was what God had told him to say. God does not lie. It happened as God said. When God told Moses to wave his staff over the rivers of Egypt and He would turn them to blood, He didn’t lie. It happened. When God sent told Moses to tell Pharoah of the ten plagues coming, it happened, God’s Word is truth. During the Dark Ages, God’s Word was suppressed and hidden away. In this way, it was clothed in sackcloth as in mourning. But it wasn’t gone, it was just scarce and hard to find. Martin Luther found a Bible chained to a monastery wall. When the printing press was invented, God’s Word went out, though the papists killed William Tyndale for translating it. People hid God’s Word under loose bricks, in baked bread, in the seams of their garments. The light was dim but it did not go out!

After the fall of the papacy in 1798, the end of the time prophecy given in Revelation 11:3, France went atheist, fueled by the beast out of the bottomless pit, and burned their Bibles. They turned cathedrals into halls of vice, with a lewd woman worshipped as their goddess of “reason”. They celebrated because marriage was disavowed. Liscentiousness became the rule of the day. Thus the two witnesses lay dead in the streets for the appointed time period, 3 1/2 years. But after the leaders of the French Revolution began to turn on one another, and all the nobility fell victim to the blade, people realized how far they had gone. They looked with disgust at the blood on the streets. They saw that they needed God’s Word. They needed a 7th day Sabbath, not a ten day work-week where even horses fell down dead in the streets. Churches were eventually reopened, the Bible was again allowed. The result was a revival in Europe. The British Bible Society was founded in 1804. The American Bible Society was founded in 1816. The second Great Awakening took place. The two witnesses were LIFTED UP. Those witnesses, caught up to heaven, now stand in the heavenly investigative judgement. By their Words, we will be judged.

As a recap, we read in Revelation 11:13, “And at the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven.” Scholars believe this refers to the great upheaval of the French Revolution and the effects of atheism in the world. It is estimated that at least 7000 of the French nobility died at the gulilotine during this revolution.

“The second woe is past, and behold, the third woe cometh quickly.”

THE SWEET YET BITTER BOOK

As we come to Revelation 10 we see another mighty angel clothed with clouds and a rainbow. In his hand there was a little book. One foot was on the sea, the other on the earth. This shows dominion over both. See Hebrews 1:13, Joshua 1:3. It is not for us to know what the seven thunders uttered. John was instructed NOT to write it out. Don’t waste your time speculating over it. There is enough in God’s Word that we can understand, that’s important.

Verse 6 is a recognition of our CREATOR. Again we point out that this wording of "heaven, things that are therein, and the sea" is a quote from the Sabbath commandment, Exodus 20:11. The Sabbath will play a large part in last day events because it shows who we honor. We will either worship the beast or follow God by showing our allegiance to one or the other.

We are living in the time when the voice of the seventh angel is being heard. The mystery of God is almost finished. What is this MYSTERY of God. One Scripture that comes to mind is the mystery of “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). A mystery is something we want to understand, to have made plain to us. Christ came to earth to reveal the Father’s plan for us through redemption. He wants to redeem us from the penalty and the power of SIN. By surrendering to the Father’s will for us, we can have the MIND OF CHRIST and be renewed through His Spirit. Then God's purposes for us will be fulfilled and the mystery of God will be finished.

John was given a little book from this angel of Revelation 10. He was told to eat it and it was sweet in his mouth but made his stomach bitter. Acid reflux big time. We find this experience by an Old Testament prophet, Ezekiel. The people of God in the 1800’s also experienced a bitter test as they looked for the return of Christ. Great revivals broke out all over the world concerning the time prophecy of Daniel 8:14. We must understand the book of Daniel is the smallest book in Hebrew Scripture. (The minor prophets appear in the Jewish Bible as one book, so that makes Daniel very small with only 12 chapters.) This prophecy in Daniel 8 was thought by many Bible scholars of the day to designate the time of the second coming. That was a very sweet idea. But of course Jesus said only the Father knew the time for His return. But we have to realize that just because these people were mistaken on the event, it doesn’t make them lost or a false prophet. (No one was professing to be a prophet.) It was a misinterpretation. We have to remember that the disciples were very mistaken about the mission of Jesus. They did not understand the words of Christ. They lamented, “We trusted that it was He who would deliver Israel.” When Jesus died on the cross, they thought it was the end of the world. They didn’t understand the prophecies and they surely didn’t understand what Jesus meant when He said He would rise the third day. Here in the book of Revelation we are told even though it was a bitter experience, they realized they made a mistake. They continued in prayer and study. It encouraged them to read, “Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.” The people of God were directed in the next chapter of Revelation to measure the temple of God. Then they discovered that the cleansing of the sanctuary is not the SECOND COMING, but rather, the opening of the books of JUDGEMENT of those who worshipped therein. This spills into Revelation 11:1. John was told to measure the temple and the worshippers. Verse 2 says he was not to measure the outer court, the Gentiles, those who do not profess Christ. We are also given a time prophecy of 42 months, which we will get into in our next post.

The opening of this chapter and the very end of Revelation 11, directs us to study the temple of God in HEAVEN. The earthly temple was just a figure of the true, a shadow, a type of heavenly realities. By studying the appointed times of God’s calendar, the people who went through the 1844 disappointment realized we are living in the heavenly DAY OF ATONEMENT. This is a time when eternal destinies are decided. It is a time to be cleansing our hearts and minds. It is a time for the putting away of sin, to allow Christ to blot our sins off the records. When Christ finishes this work, there will be no more chances, we will be sealed either for God or against Him. There is a final testing coming. The issue of the MARK OF THE BEAST is just before us.

WOES AGAINST PAPAL ROME
The Role of Islam in Bible Prophecy, Revelation 9

“And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!” As we come to the end of Revelation 8, we see special woes pronounced. Historically we see this as Islamic attacks on papal Rome. Let’s study this out.

“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”

Many have asked about the role of Islam in Bible prophecy. No, Muhammed is not the great Prophet Moses wrote about in Deuteronomy 18. The GREAT PROPHET is our Lord Jesus. (see Acts 3:22, 20) Revelation 9 is definitively Islam, used as a tool of God to punish papal Rome. The king over them is not just Satan, but you can correctly insert MOHAMMED in there. If these attacks on Rome had not occured during the Dark Ages, the Protestant Reformation would have been crushed by Catholicism. We see the key to the bottomless pit unleases locusts from a desolate area, rightly describing the armies coming from the deserts of Arabia. The torment from these evil ambassadors was so bad, it was like the sting of a scorpion. In the Bible locusts were used to punish a nation that forsook God. It is a fitting representation of punishment upon an apostate church that dares to assume the name of Christ in its arrogant blasphemy. The locusts darken the sun, a source of blessing. There is smoke, showing the darkness of the times. Those who do not have the seal of God were HURT, but not killed, though men sought death. These were not true locusts. This is symbolic language. John tells us he saw “horses prepared unto battle”. This mean bloodshed and fighting. These men had long hair, raging teeth, breastplates, and a STING in their tail. With their turbans, long hair, and earings they had the appearance of women. The sound of the approaching army was deafening. Wings would represent speed. It was during this time that gunpowder was introduced into warfare. If you have ever watched flintlock reenactments, you know the gunpowder produces a smokey hue over the battlefield. The trees and grass being spared would in this case refer to those who have God’s watchcare over them, the true Christians of the day, see Psalm 1.

THE SECOND WOE. Verses 12-19 “ One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter. And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.”

Notice the location of the voice. Jesus is still in the Holy Place in the time frame of this vision. We see four angels loosened from the river, which is Islamic territory. There were actually four sultanies—Aleppo, Iconium, Damascus, and Baghdad. They had been held in check by the Byzanines, but this was no longer holding them back. There is a time frame here, a year, month, day, and hour. This is 391 years and 15 days, 1249-1449 A.D. This is telling us when the Islamic region had power over men. Note that the predominate colors of the Turkish uniforms were red (fire), blue (jacinth and smoke) and yellow (brimstone).

Revelation 9:20-21 tells us these judgments did not lead to repentance. “ And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.” Catholicism is known for its idolatry. The martyrs were murdered in barbaric ways during the Dark Ages. By the sale of indulgences, this organization stole from the people and built themselves lofty and majesty temple palaces. They did not repent but continued in apostasy over the centuries. We personally heard from a Catholic judge who was sexually accosted by a gay priest at the Vatican as he was there a few years ago to attend meetings. God will judge this false system, as we will see in the seventh trumpet.
