The Sacredness of the Sound: Why We Put the Phone Away
By Joseph Sahr Tengbeh
In the modern age, we carry our worlds in our pockets. But when we walk into the sanctuary for praise and worship, we are entering a different realm one where the King of Kings is waiting to speak.
While "Snapping" or recording might feel like a way to capture the moment, it often prevents us from actually living the moment. Here is why we must avail ourselves fully to God during worship.
1. Worship is a Dialogue, Not a Show
When we view praise and worship through a lens or a screen, we inadvertently become spectators rather than participants. God isn't looking for content creators; He is looking for worshippers.
• Scripture Reference: “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:23)
• The Risk: If your hands are busy holding a phone to get the perfect angle, they aren't lifted in surrender. If your mind is on your "story" views, it isn't on His glory.
2. The Danger of Missing the "Still, Small Voice"
God often speaks in the transitions—the quiet moments between songs or the crescendo of a chorus. If you are distracted by filters, captions, or checking if the video recorded correctly, you might miss the specific word meant for your situation.
• Scripture Reference: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
• The Risk: You cannot be truly "still" if you are digitally active. Worship is the time to tune out the world so you can tune in to Heaven’s frequency.
3. Creating a Distraction for Others
Our actions in the sanctuary affect the atmosphere for everyone. A bright screen in a moment of deep prayer can break the focus of the person sitting behind you. We are called to love our neighbors, even in how we worship.
• Scripture Reference: “Let all things be done decently and in order.” (1 Corinthians 14:40)
• The Risk: By prioritizing a digital memory, we might accidentally hinder someone else's spiritual breakthrough.
4. Avail Yourself for the Encounter
There is a weight of glory (the Kavod) that settles during sincere worship. This is the moment God can heal a heart, provide direction, or break a long-standing chain.
• Scripture Reference: “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit...” (Acts 2:4)
• The Lesson: The disciples were filled because they were present and in one accord. They weren't documenting the fire; they were catching it.
