As the JPC continues its human rights advocacy, on 22nd March 2017, engaged the Kingtom barracks community in legal education of the child right act of 2007. Twenty-five boys and girls with ages from twenty-one and below benefited from the training. Brief discussions were held around: a) rights of the child;- right to life, right to shelter, dignity, education and to name a few, that any decision or action taken shall be in the best interest of the child or children. B) Roles and responsibility of the parents;-the primary responsibility of the parent(s) is to provide support to their children in the enjoyment of those rights stated. They all brainstormed that even though those rights are accorded them they too must be responsive to achieve them through hard work and obedience. They also came up with responsibilities of the community to alongside help the bringing up of them by non-discrimination and information sharing on the conduct of the children to one another in the neighborhoods. Some of their challenges they said were; peer group pressure, lack of direct parental care which brings discrimination, poverty etc. the Mammy Queen and an observer vowed to the commission that their children will be an exception to the saying that “No wonder, na barracks pikin den nor dae betteh”. This program was facilitated by the JPC Paralegals Freetown Office and moderated by Mrs. Agnes Abu of Radio Maria, taking the broadcasting to the community. Stay tuned on Tuesday 28th March between the hours 2p.m to 3p.m for a broadcast on the radio, 90.7 in Freetown.

Guess who came to JPC Office? On Tuesday 8th November, Mrs. Cathryn Turay, a Catholic and graduate in law in collaboration with the Justice and peace Commission donated toiletries and religious item (Rosary Beeds) at the female correctional Service, Special Court Building in Freetown. Seventy inmates benefited from this humanitarian gesture. During their visit, Mrs. Turay shared the word of God and provided counselling service to some inmates. Additionally, she explained the importance of the use of the rosary and its recitation as key in the Catholic teachings. In response, a female inmate emphasized the use of the rosary as protection and requested for a regular visit of a catholic priest prayers and catholic teachings.

June 16, is celebrated every year in Sierra Leone. The theme for this year is “Protecting Children’s right during violence and crises”. In collaboration with government of Sierra Leone, JPC supported the management of the Remand Home in Kingtom to commemorate this all important day through a debate on the theme ”Why teenager engage in crime”. Lack of parental responsibilities and lack of role models at home and in communities were highlighted by the inmates as some of the reasons for their involvement in crime.
The manager in charge of the Remand Home in his statement encourage CSOs to advocate for the children for good and quality education, medical, shelter and food for inmates.

Caritas Freetown's Justice and Peace Commission today launched a project that focuses on provision of legal aid and support for children behind bars. The JPC has always been working relentlessly to provide legal aid and access to justice to vulnerable groups especially women and girls.

Today's launching marks a road map in tracking children who are in conflict with the law with support from Kindermissionwerk - Germany.

As part of our organizational focus Caritas Freetown's Justice and Peace Commission will continue to support those in need of it services. However, with the growing demands for our services, there is need for more support to be able to meet the demand of those we seek to serve.
